Ph.D. Fellowships in Visual Analytics The Worcester Polytechnic Institute Computer Science Department seeks applicants for 1-3 Ph.D. Fellowships in the area of Visual Analytics. These awards, as part of the Department of Education's GAANN Program (Graduate Assistantships in Areas of National Need), are restricted to U.S. citizens or permanent residents pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science who plan a career in research or education. The awards, which cover tuition, a stipend of $30K per year, and some travel funds, are renewable for up to three years. Renewal of a fellowship is based on evaluation of academic and research performance. Continued funding beyond the Fellowship, if needed, will be provided in the form of a research or teaching assistantship. Applications are being considered for both the Fall 2006 and Spring 2007 semesters. Applicants should have a strong background in one or more areas relevant to visual analytics, including information and data visualization, graphics, human-computer interaction, knowledge discovery in databases, and statistical analysis. Call for Contributions Computers & Graphics - Special Issue on Visual Analytics - vol. 31, no. 3, June 2007 Visual Analytics has become an increasingly important topic on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. The integration of data mining technology and information visualization is evolving into a foundation for dealing with the rapidly growing amounts of data in very different areas. All scenarios share the basic idea to support the capabilities of the human mind by computer systems, which extract and compile information from heterogeneous sources and present them in an appropriate way to the user. At the technological level, achievements in visualization, data processing and analysis from the last two decades have to be integrated into this emerging field of research. The International Journal "Computers & Graphics" has decided to dedicate a special issue to Visual Analytics. Contributions to this issue describing original research are solicited that contribute to the technical challenges posed by Visual Analytics. Thus, topics of interest - within the area of Visual Analytics - include, but are not limited to: - Visual representations and new visual paradigms - Integration with automated analysis, databases, statistics, design, perception, etc. - Knowledge representation and semantics - Data streams, data compression & feature extraction - Scalability in problem size - Data quality and uncertainty - Data provenance - Problem solving, decision science, human analytic discourse - Evaluation methods - User acceptability - Synthesis of problems in applications Papers for this special issue will be chosen from the submissions based on their quality and originality. WHAT: Today, the word "science" encompasses myriad arenas of physical and abstract inquiry. This unique exhibition, at the Healy Hall in midtown Manhattan, uses innovative mapping techniques to physically show what and where science is today, how different branches of science relate to each other and where different branches of study are heading, where cutting edge science is erupting as archipelagos in the oceans of the yet unknown - and - how it all relates back to the physical centers of research. The world of science is turned into a navigable landscape. Modern mapping imagery has come a long way from Ptolemy. In this stimulating show compelling for all ages and backgrounds, audiences will both visually and tactilely uncover how contemporary scientific thought has expanded. Such visualization of scientific progress is approached through computer-generated relationships, featured on large panels as well through the collaboration of New York based artists W. It continues in the footsteps of the InfoVis contests with its purpose to promote the development of benchmarks for visual analytics and establish a forum to advance evaluation methods. The dataset consists mostly of news stories from Alderwood's city newspaper, along with some multimedia materials and background information. The goal is to determine if inappropriate activities are taking place and to provide evidence based hypotheses and conclusions. Participants will have several months to prepare their submissions. Selected entries will present at the conference, and some teams will be invited to participate in a special workshop before the conference, during which professional analysts will interact with the winners' systems and provide personal feedback. Since 2004, this symposium has brought together researchers from the fields of perception, graphics and visualization, to facilitate a wider exchange of ideas. Our goals are to use insights from perception to advance the design of methods for visual, auditory and haptic representation, and to use computer graphics to enable perceptual research that would otherwise not be possible. Submissions are invited in the broad range of areas at the intersection of computer graphics, visualization and perception. Over the years SOFTIVS has become the premier venue for presenting all types of research on software visualization.
