InfoVis 2007 - Call for Tutorials The IEEE Visualization / InfoVis conference is soliciting proposals for half-day tutorials. The meeting is in Sacramento and tutorials will be presented on Oct. 28-29. Though InfoVis researchers have given tutorials before, this is the first year InfoVis tutorials are represented on the organizing committee, so we want to make sure to get the best, most interesting proposals. Full-day tutorials should be broken into two half-day sections, perhaps aimed at different levels of expertise. If you're interested, please submit a proposal. The deadline is April 30. Tutorial presenters will be offered a $1000 honorarium to be shared by the speakers, and two free registrations to IEEE Visualization. VAST 2007 CONTEST Visual Analytics Contest www.cs.umd.edu/hcil/VASTcontest07 The contest is a submission category of the IEEE Symposium on VISUAL ANALYTICS SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY 2007 http://conferences.computer.org/vast/vast2007 --- VAST 2007 Contest --- The purpose of the CONTEST is to promote the development of benchmarks for visual analytics and establish a forum to advance evaluation methods. The dataset consists mostly of news stories, along with some multimedia materials and background information. The goal is to determine if inappropriate activities are taking place and to provide evidence based hypotheses and conclusions. Participants have several months to prepare their submissions. Selected entries present at the conference. --- What's different this year? --- The general format of the event remains the same as the 200 contest but this year we also provide a pre-processed version of the dataset (e.g. with entities already extracted) so that more teams can participate. IEEE InfoVis 2007 Call for Participation http://conferences.computer.org/infovis/infovis2007/ We solicit papers, posters, artistic works, and contest entries for IEEE InfoVis 2007. In addition, we encourage the submission of proposals for InfoVis-related tutorials, workshops, interactive demos, and panels to be held during the conference week (see Vis conference web site for details). InfoVis is the primary meeting in the field of information visualization, and is held on October 28 through 30, in conjunction with the IEEE Visualization 2007 (Vis07) conference and the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology Symposium (VAST 07) in Sacramento, California, the week of October 28 through November 1, 2007. Computer-based information visualization, or "InfoVis", centers around helping people explore or explain data through interactive software that exploits the capabilities of the human perceptual system. A key challenge in information visualization is designing a cognitively useful spatial mapping of a dataset that is not inherently spatial and accompanying the mapping by interaction techniques that allow people to intuitively explore the dataset. Information visualization draws on the intellectual history of several traditions, including computer graphics, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, semiotics, graphic design, statistical graphics, cartography, and art. The synthesis of relevant ideas from these fields with new methodologies and techniques made possible by interactive computation are critical for helping people keep pace with the torrents of data confronting them. In addition to having a two-page article in the Conference Compendium, authors will create a large poster summarizing their work and will be available to discuss it during the scheduled evening conference reception and poster session. Accepted poster summaries will be included electronically on the IEEE Vis/InfoVis 2007 Conference DVD, placed on the official InfoVis web site, and also distributed in a hardcopy compendium to all symposium and conference attendees. At least one author of an accepted poster must attend the conference to present the work at the evening poster session, and authors will also be required to present a one-minute summary of their work at a posters preview session earlier in that day. Owing in part to the mainstreaming of computer graphics and the democratization of information sources on the Internet, this new cadre of creative researchers has discovered the possibility of visualization techniques to reveal thought-provoking but otherwise hidden narratives. Often using little more than home computers and widely available programming toolkits, artists and designers have taken material evidence into their own hands and expanded the conceptual horizons of information visualization as a mode of artistic practice and critical inquiry. The IEEE InfoVis Art Exhibit examines the merging of artistic intention and visualization technique. We seek artworks that reveal information patterns in aesthetic, provocative and innovative ways. The goal of the exhibit is to prompt viewers towards greater introspection about what information is worth visualizing and why. The InfoVis Art Exhibit will consider the following types of work: * Interactive CD/DVD-ROM work * Interactive web-based work * Printed artwork Interactive pieces should run on a standard computer configuration (Windows Operating System, 512 MB RAM, 20 GB hard drive, 1024 x 768 pixel monitor resolution) as such systems will be available at the exhibit. The data set consists of data about Hollywood movies, including actors, actresses, awards, and similar. This years focus is on the design aspects of the visualization in addition to its exploratory and analytical aspects, and entrants are encouraged to augment the data set with any publicly available data. Contest entries will be submitted as a two (2) page summary, a video and accompanying materials. All accepted entry materials will be made available online after the conference. At least one author of an accepted entry must attend the conference to present the work. Authors of first place entries will present their work during the main contest session. Authors of second place entries will present their work during the poster session. InfoVis colleagues: You may be aware of the NVAC (National Visualization and Analytics Center) research program sponsored here in the U.S. at the Pacific Northwest National Labs. (See http://nvac.pnl.gov for more info.) This research program focuses on the area of visual analytics which is certainly related to and shares many motivations with information visualization. We have created a Visual Analytics Digital Library to house visual analytics-related educational materials including course notes, slides, video lectures, homework assignments, exam questions, papers, etc. This note is simply to advertise the website and to encourage you to submit materials that may be relevant to visual analytics. Since 2004, APGV has brought together researchers from the fields of perception, graphics and visualization, to facilitate a wider exchange of ideas. Our goals are to use insights from perception to advance the design of methods for visual, auditory and haptic representation, and to use computer graphics to enable perceptual research that would otherwise not be possible. Submissions are invited in the broad range of areas at the intersection of computer graphics, visualization and perception. Specific examples include, but are not limited to: * applications of insights from perception to the development of algorithms for more efficient, effective or realistic modeling, rendering and/or animation * applications of perception in the design and evaluation of methods for more effective representation and communication of data * the study of perception and perceptual issues in virtual environments * computational aesthetics, stylization, and perceptual aspects of non-photorealistic rendering Submissions are particularly welcome in all areas of basic perception research that have applications in computer graphics and visualization. ** The submission deadline for the IEEE Computer Graphics and Application special issue "Discovering the Unexpected" has been extended to January 16. 2007. ** Discovering the Unexpected Guest Editors: Kris Cook and Rae Earnshaw Special Issue of IEEE CG&A, September/October 2007 Submissions Due: 16 January 2006 The need to make sense of all types of complex, conflicting, and dynamic information has provided the impetus for new tools and technologies that combine the strengths of visualization with powerful underlying algorithms and innovative interaction techniques. These tools are part of the emerging field of visual analytics. This marriage of computation, visual representation, and interactive thinking supports intensive analysis. The goal is not only to permit users to detect expected events, such as might be predicted by models, but also to help users discover the unexpected- the surprising anomalies, changes, patterns, and relationships that are then examined and assessed to develop new insight. For this special issue of IEEE CG&A, we solicit papers that describe innovative results in visual analytics, with an emphasis on applications that support discovery and assessment of the unexpected. Potential topics include, but are not limited to ■ interaction techniques to support analytical reasoning; ■ mathematical representations and transformations; ■ visual analysis of dynamic or multitype data; ■ visual analysis of text, audio, video, image, or structured data; ■ information synthesis and data fusion; ■ visual representations; ■ collaborative visual analytics; ■ representation of uncertainty; ■ representation of context; ■ spatial and temporal analyses; ■ off-the-desktop applications (for example, handheld devices and large displays); ■ novel approaches for communicating analytic findings; ■ evaluation techniques; ■ new models of interaction, and interaction styles; ■ real-time data analysis within critical response time constraints; ■ case studies of applications demonstrating how the unexpected has been discovered; and ■ new results in the underlying science of visual analytical reasoning. Articles should be no more than 10 magazine pages, where a page is 800 words and a quarter page image counts as 200 words. Cite only the 12 references most essential for further understanding from the reader's point of view (we assume your scientific knowledge of the literature is reliable) and consider providing technical background in sidebars for readers who are not experts in your particular field. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Research scientist: Invitation for applications from researchers in the field of "Virtual Reality and Cognition" LIMSI, a multidisciplinary research unit within the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) located on the Orsay campus of the University of Paris-Sud (France), is currently developing research on "Virtual Reality and Cognition". The development of an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) system, with funding from the CNRS and the Ile-de-France Region, is part of a broader project in which the cognitive sciences will play a major role. LIMSI has embarked on a virtual and augmented reality project that will involve both designing multimodal immersive interaction methods and using these technologies in various fields of application. LIMSI also intends to develop the potential applications of VR in setting up scientific interactions between engineering and the cognitive sciences. This project has two main purposes: (a) to ensure that the development of the VR interfaces at LIMSI benefits from expertise in cognitive ergonomics; (b) to ensure that in the specific areas studied at LIMSI, VR can be used to investigate cognitive functions in people interacting with these systems. LIMSI already includes specialists in cognitive psychology, and this will facilitate this further line of development. The objective of LIMSI is to invest new types of competence in this project so that it can successfully carry out the mission with which it has been entrusted by the CNRS. The suitable candidate for this development project will be a specialist in psychology and/or cognitive ergonomics, or possibly the cognitive neurosciences, and who intends to submit an application during the next round of CNRS recruitments (December 2006/January 2007).
