Traditional data analysis techniques excel at uncovering anomalous or otherwise interesting patterns in large quantities of information, reducing great volume and complexity to human scale. On the other hand, humans can easily detect many patterns that computer software cannot, and human intelligence is uniquely able to to supervise automated analysis techniques to provide context and infer more significant meaning. The largely visual orientation of the human perceptual/cognitive system suggests that visualization approaches offer the most promising avenue for coupling machine and human pattern discovery and reasoning processes. Visualization and automated data analysis technologies have largely evolved independently of one another, however. This workshop will seek to explore the intersection between these fields, towards the goal of better defining the characteristics of next-generation problem solving tools. We will encourage submissions from a diverse range of fields, including not only the data analysis and visualization communities, but also researchers in the fields of cognitive and perceptual science, knowledge management, and linguistics. These are likely to manifest as both novel devices and as devices embedded in common objects such as refrigerators, automobiles, toys, furniture, clothes, even our bodies. While this vision of the future has prompted great advancements in context-aware computing, wireless connectivity, multi-sensor platforms, smart materials, and location-tracking technologies, there is a concern that this proliferation of technology will cause us to become increasingly overwhelmed by information. This scenario moves us away from Weiser's notion of calm technology, which proposes that information should move seamlessly between the periphery and the center of our attention. Weiser stated that good technology should not be experienced as technology at all, and we believe that ambient information systems could support this claim. Ambient information systems (which include ambient, peripheral, glance-able, and subtle displays) are non-invasive and provide useful information while blending smoothly into our surroundings. These technologies are meant to be minimally attended and perceivable from outside the range of a person's direct attention, providing pre-attentive processing without being overly distracting. Examples range from large ubiquitous public displays to small bouncing icons on the Macintosh's dock. There have been many interesting implementations of ambient information systems (e.g., AmbientDevices’Stock Orb, Koert van Mensvoort's Datafountain, Philips Electronics' Ambilight, Jafarinami et al.'s Breakaway, Mynatt et al.'s Audio Aura and Digital Family Portrait, and Mankoff et al.'s Daylight Display and BusMobile). However, ambient information systems research is is suffering from a lack of consensus on terminology, methodology, plausibility, and the general design space of ambient information. We see this workshop as an opportunity for invited participants to explore and discuss such issues. OBJECTIVE ---------- The purpose of this workshop is to explore topics of ambient information with respect to the various technologies and smart materials with which they might be implemented; identify problems in design, development, and evaluation; and derive new fundamental questions that need to be addressed. Workshop attendees should leave with a better understanding of what ambient is and next steps to further research in this domain. Questions we would like to address in this workshop include: · How are ambient information systems distinct from other information technologies? (i.e., what defines technology as being ambient?) · What are the appropriate methods for evaluating ambient information systems? · How much ambient information can one perceive and comprehend correctly? · What sorts of information are best conveyed by an ambient display? · What are examples of useful heuristics, frameworks, taxonomies, or design principles for implementation of ambient information? · What, if any, are the appropriate interaction methods for these information devices? · How can we best make use of existing technologies? (e.g. smart materials, wearable systems, etc.) · How do we measure the impact of ambient information systems? · What knowledge from other domains should we apply such systems? (e.g. art, cognitive science, design, psychology, sociology) WORKSHOP FORMAT ---------------- The workshop format will consist of a short presentation by each participant, which should conclude with a problem statement relative to the workshop topics. These problem statements will be ordered, and the participants will decide which are most relevant to future research on ambient and subtle information systems. We will then break out into groups and discuss strategies for addressing the selected topics. SUBMISSIONS ------------ We invite submissions including descriptions of works in progress, research contributions, position statements and demonstrations. Submissions should attempt to address one or more of the aforementioned questions regarding the design and evaluation of ambient information technologies. For distribution on Infovis Digest: Announcing the release of XmdvTool 7.0 XmdvTool, a software package for visual exploration and analysis of multivariate data sets, has been in the public domain since 1994. This cross-platform tool supports many of the most common methods for displaying multivariate datasets, and via clustering of both records and dimensions, is scalable to millions of records and thousands of dimensions. Some of the new features of Version 7.0 include: * Visualization using pixel-oriented techniques, including linked brushing between all visualizations, powerful data reordering capabilities, and dimension placement based on multidimensional scaling. * Enhanced handling of nominal data, including using correspondence analysis to do data-driven conversion of nominal to ordinal values. * Automated visual clutter measurement and clutter-based dimension reordering. * Interactive control of dimension binning for dimensional stacking. * Significantly improved rendering speeds in many of the displays. * Support for HDF4 and HDF5 data formats, as well as Oracle databases, Excel spreadsheets, and XmdvTool's native .okc format. XmdvTool runs on both Windows and Unix/Linux platforms. It comes with both executables (for Windows, a self-extracting installer is available) as well as source code and build instructions. Call for Contributions EXTENDED DEADLINE: September 17th Computers & Graphics - Special Issue on Visual Analytics - vol. 31, no. 3, June 2007 Visual Analytics has become an increasingly important topic on both sides of the Atlantic and beyond. The integration of data mining technology and information visualization is evolving into a foundation for dealing with the rapidly growing amounts of data in very different areas. All scenarios share the basic idea to support the capabilities of the human mind by computer systems, which extract and compile information from heterogeneous sources and present them in an appropriate way to the user. At the technological level, achievements in visualization, data processing and analysis from the last two decades have to be integrated into this emerging field of research. The International Journal "Computers & Graphics" has decided to dedicate a special issue to Visual Analytics. Contributions to this issue describing original research are solicited that contribute to the technical challenges posed by Visual Analytics. Applications to strategic and competitive watch, and to social network analysis. By nature, strategic watch as well as social network analysis (in a wider sense) mix data from various sources. The goal is then to be able to discern relevant signals in massive information in order to anticipate tendencies or events that can be critical to organizations. In these contexts, interactive and visual graph mining is a fruitful approach requiring the development of techniques astutely combining dynamic graphical representations with interactive mining. The project will evolve in collaboration with the members of the Visualization of Massive Data research theme of the MABioVis team at LaBRI (Université Bordeaux I). Its focus will primarily be the study of social networks (close to the on-going ANR project SPANGEO SPAtial Network in GEOgraphy) and strategic watch (ANR RNTL grant proposal). Other application domains include biology and bio-informatics, where various data sources are combined (proteomics, clinical data, bibliographical data) in order to help biologists gain perspective and iteratively refine their research strategies. Mining large and complex graphs to identify sub-communities requires developing ideas emerging from graphical statistics, combinatorial analysis (graphs), classification and clustering, often with the necessity to integrate specific domain knowledge. Interacting on graphical representations (and on the underlying data), and visually detecting structural patterns provide insights that sometimes cannot be captured by classical statistical analysis. When dealing with dynamic data, visually identified components or specific data elements can be put under surveillance to follow their evolution and help diagnose or decide of actions to take. The Bordeaux team develops a software framework (Tulip www.tulip-software.org) for the visualization and manipulation of graphs, capable of dealing with large graphs, and targeted at computing and navigating graph hierarchies. Required skills Skills are required in visual mining (graphical representations and interaction), but also in combinatorics and/or statistics (with an emphasis on clustering/classification). The candidate must hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science and have clearly shown her/his abilities to conduct research at an international level. Techniques developed within the team are naturally experimented with Tulip before going into future releases. We seek persons having programming experience, to compute and/or experiment with graphs, and also to acquire and/or extract data. The Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics is seeking a qualified Postdoctoral Researcher or PhD student For Modeling and Measuring the Focus of Spatial Attention see also <http://www.kyb.mpg.de/jobs/BWFIT_postdoc_int.pdf> As part of a consortium of nine grants recently funded by Baden-Württemberg (BW-FIT) on Interactive Visualization with Gigapixel Displays, the Max-Planck-Institute for Biological Cybernetics, Department of Cognitive and Computational Psychophysics (Prof. Heinrich H. Bülthoff), Tübingen, Germany has a research position available for a PostDoc / PhD student Investigating the measurement, prediction and manipulation of gaze-direction Project: The consortium brings together researchers from computer graphics, visualization and psychophysics to investigate and optimize the use of very large visual displays ("Gigapixel displays") for viewing and interacting with vast quantities of data. Our project involves: (i) building a gaze-contingent multi-resolution system that takes into account the gaze and gestures of a freely-moving user, and (ii) developing computational models of attention for predicting and influencing the focus of attention. It is an excellent opportunity to bring together applied and basic research while covering both experimental and theoretical work. Institute: The successful applicant would join a thriving international research group at the Max-Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics (http://www.kyb.tuebingen.mpg.de) which uses a combination of psychophysics, computational modeling and cutting-edge technology to study the human brain. The group is well-known for its experience with Bayesian models of perception and action, as well as computer graphics and virtual reality. The institute also offers a unique range of technical facilities (eye-, head and body tracking, HDR and stereo displays, render cluster, motion platforms, 3D scanners and printer, fMRI, etc.). The scientists are supported by dedicated technicians. Requirements: Applicants for the Post-doc position should have a PhD in Psychology, Cognitive science, Neuroscience, Computer science, Biology, Physics or related areas. A strong background in visual psychophysics, eye-movements and/or attention is a major advantage. Applicants for the PhD position should have a master/diploma or equivalent degree in the previously listed areas. Prior experience in data analysis and modeling as well as computer programming would be an advantage. Offer: The position is available immediately and lasts 3 years. The salary depends on the qualifications, based on the TVöD E13 or E14 payscale (PostDoc: 35-46.000 €/y, PhD: 18-20.000 €/y), according to the German Public Service regulations.
