IEEE Symposium on Information Visualization 2006 Call for Participation http://conferences.computer.org/infovis/infovis2006/ We solicit papers, posters, videos, artistic works, and contest entries for InfoVis 2006, the twelfth annual IEEE Symposium on Information Visualization. In addition, we encourage the submission of proposals for InfoVis-related tutorials and workshops to be held during the conference week (see Vis conference web site for details).InfoVis is the primary meeting in the field of information visualization, and is held on October 29 through 31, in conjunction with the IEEE Visualization 2006 (Vis06) conference and the IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology Symposium (VAST06) in Baltimore, Maryland, the week of October 29 through November 3, 2006. Computer-based information visualization, or "infovis", centers around helping people explore or explain data through systems that include static or interactive visual representations. The central design challenge in infovis is designing a cognitively useful spatial mapping of a dataset that is not inherently spatial. There are many possible visual encodings, only a fraction of which are helpful for a given task. We draw on the intellectual history of several traditions, including computer graphics, human-computer interaction, cognitive psychology, semiotics, graphic design, statistical graphics, cartography, and art. We encourage the use of digital video to support the submission, particularly if part or all of the work covers interactive techniques. At least one author of an accepted paper must attend the conference to present the work, and authors will also be required to present a very brief one-minute summary of their talk at the opening papers preview session. All papers accepted to the Symposium will also appear in an issue of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). Posters are typically summaries of ongoing work that authors present to gain feedback from the community about the research. In addition to having a two-page article in the Conference Compendium, authors will create a large poster summarizing their work and will be available to discuss it during the Monday evening conference reception and poster session. Accepted poster summaries will be included electronically on the IEEE Visualization 2006 Conference DVD, placed on the official infovis.org web site, and also distributed in a hardcopy compendium to all symposium and conference attendees. At least one author of an accepted poster must attend the conference to present the work at the evening poster session, and authors will also be required to present a very brief one-minute summary of their work at a posters preview session earlier in that day. We want to encourage the production of high quality videos, and aim at producing a valuable resource that will stimulate research and that can be used for educational purposes. Videos are submitted as a digital video movie, with maximum size of 100 MB, accompanied by a two (2) page summary of the work. The length of the video should preferably not exceed 5 minutes, but in very special cases exceptions can be made. The size limit is strict however. We encourage original submissions of unpublished work, as well as new submissions showcasing systems, methods and techniques of interest to the information visualization community that have been presented in other venues. Accepted videos will be included electronically on the IEEE Visualization 2005 Conference DVD, shown during the InfoVis symposium, placed on the official infovis.org web site, and the summary will be distributed in a hardcopy compendium to all symposium and conference attendees. In recent years, however, both the mainstreaming of computer graphics and the democratization of data sources on the Internet have had important repercussions in the field of information visualization. With the ability to create visual representations of data on home computers, artists and designers have greatly expanded the practice of infovis as artistic pursuit. In its first edition, the InfoVis Art Exhibit examines the merging of artistic intention and visualization technique. We are looking for artwork that reveals data patterns in aesthetic, innovative ways. The InfoVis Art Exhibit will consider the following types of work: * interactive CD/DVD-ROM work * interactive web-based work * printed artwork Accepted art submissions will be included electronically on the IEEE Visualization 2005 Conference DVD, shown during the InfoVis symposium, placed on the official infovis.org web site, and the summary will be distributed in a hardcopy compendium to all symposium and conference attendees. For instructions on how to submit your work, see submission page at: http://conferences.computer.org/infovis/infovis2006/art_show_c.html ------------ CONTEST Due: August 11, 2006 Contest Dataset and Tasks: http://conferences.computer.org/infovis/infovis2006/contest_c.html Following last year's Technology Trends and Industry Analysis data set, a widely analyzed and familiar U.S. Census 2000 data set is the topic of this year's competition. The goal of the contest is to promote the development of benchmarks for information visualization, establish a forum to promote evaluation methods, and encourage creativity and utility. The data set consists of 1% of the results of the U.S. Census 2000, and submissions using the complete set or a selected subset of one or more geographic regions are encouraged, focusing on at least one of the contest tasks. Augmentation of the data set with any publicly available data is allowed. Contest entries are submitted as a two (2) page summary, a video and accompanying materials to one of three categories: academic, industry or student category. All accepted entry materials will be made available online after the conference. At least one author of an accepted entry must attend the conference to present the work. Authors of first place entries will present their work during the main contest session. Authors of second place entries will present their work during the poster session. Duplicate submissions should *not* be made to both the poster and contest categories.

The scope of the symposium, co-located with the annual IEEE Visualization 2006 Conference and the IEEE InfoVis Symposium, is based on the research agenda which has been recently published in the book Illuminating the Path: The Research and Development Agenda for Visual Analytics, J. J. Thomas and K. A. Cook, editors, IEEE CS Press. We invite you to participate by submitting your original research and joining us in Baltimore, Maryland, October 31 - November 2, 2006. Visual Analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by the highly interactive visual interface. People use visual analytics tools and techniques to synthesize information; derive insight from massive, dynamic, and often conflicting data; detect the expected and discover the unexpected; provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments; and communicate assessments effectively for action. The issues stimulating this body of research provide a grand challenge in science: turning information overload into the opportunity of the decade. Visual analytics requires interdisciplinary science beyond traditional scientific and information visualization to include statistics, mathematics, knowledge representation, management and discovery technologies, cognitive and perceptual sciences, decision sciences, and more. Submission should help develop and/or apply the science of Visual Analytics, clearly showing an interdisciplinary approach. We solicit position and research papers discussing proposed new information visualization evaluation methods e.g. new ways of conducting user studies, definition and assessment of infovis effectiveness through the formal characterization of perceptual and cognitive tasks and insights, definition of quality criteria and metrics. Case study and survey papers are also welcomed when clearly presenting general guidelines, practical advices, and lessons learned. APGV 2006: THIRD SYMPOSIUM ON APPLIED PERCEPTION IN GRAPHICS AND VISUALIZATION Co-located with ACM SIGGRAPH 06. Boston, MA. 28th - 30th July, 2006. http://www.apgv.org SECOND CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Research in computer graphics and visualization has great potential to benefit from, and contribute to, research in perception. Since 2004, this symposium has brought together researchers from the fields of perception, graphics and visualization, to facilitate a wider exchange of ideas. Our goals are to use insights from perception to advance the design of methods for visual, auditory and haptic representation, and to use computer graphics to enable perceptual research that would otherwise not be possible. Submissions are invited in the broad range of areas at the intersection of computer graphics, visualization and perception. Specific examples include, but are not limited to: - applications of insights from perception to the development of algorithms for more efficient, effective or realistic modeling, rendering and/or animation - applications of perception in the design and evaluation of methods for more effective representation and communication of data - the study of perception and perceptual issues in virtual environments - computational aesthetics, stylization, and perceptual aspects of non-photorealistic rendering Submissions are particularly welcome in all areas of basic perception research that have applications in computer graphics and visualization. Proceedings, which will include the poster abstracts, will be published by ACM SIGGRAPH. ** Paper Submission Date moved to March 31, 2006 ** I am pleased to announce the following great news: IEEE Computer Society Publications has approved a 3 year trial of the IEEE Visualization Conference and IEEE Information Visualization Symposium proceedings appearing as an issue of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), starting this year. This is a great opportunity for our community and also means more work for authors and reviewers as papers can be accepted to Vis/Infovis/TVCG pending minor revision and will undergo a very quick revision and review cycle to ensure they are acceptable for publication and presentation. We appreciate the additional work that both authors and reviewers will commit to in order to make this venture a success. To enable the two part submission process and ensure the journal quality of the review, revision, and publication process, the submission date for papers to both IEEE Visualization and IEEE Symp. on Information Visualization is now March 31. CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG) "Visual Analytics" Special Issue in Late 2006 IEEE Transaction on Visualization and Computer Graphics seeks original manuscripts for a Special Issue on Visual Analytics, scheduled to appear in late 2006. Visual Analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by the highly interactive visual interface. People use visual analytics tools and techniques to synthesize information; derive insight from massive, dynamic, and often conflicting data; detect the expected and discover the unexpected; provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments; and communicate assessments effectively for action. The issues stimulating this body of research provide a grand challenge in science: turning information overload into the opportunity of the decade. Visual analytics requires interdisciplinary science beyond traditional scientific and information visualization to include statistics, mathematics, knowledge representation, management and discovery technologies, cognitive and perceptual sciences, decision sciences, and more. An important research agenda to develop the next generation suite of visual analytics technologies is available at http://nvac.pnl.gov/agenda.stm . Contributions to the special issue should help develop and/or apply the science of Visual Analytics, clearly showing an interdisciplinary approach. The central design challenge in infovis is designing a cognitively useful spatial mapping of a dataset that is not inherently spatial. This year InfoVis has expanded to three full days. The InfoVis Symposium is a single track conference with both an engaging technical program and ample opportunities for interactions with colleagues and friends. The technical program includes research paper presentations, posters, results of the annual InfoVis contest, and videos, which are new this year. This year, the symposium includes a panel on turning information visualization innovations into commercial products and a special panel remembering Steve Roth and his contributions to the field. CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG) "Visual Analytics" Special Issue in Late 2006 IEEE Transaction on Visualization and Computer Graphics seeks original manuscripts for a Special Issue on Visual Analytics, scheduled to appear in late 2006. Visual Analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by the highly interactive visual interface. People use visual analytics tools and techniques to synthesize information; derive insight from massive, dynamic, and often conflicting data; detect the expected and discover the unexpected; provide timely, defensible, and understandable assessments; and communicate assessments effectively for action. The issues stimulating this body of research provide a grand challenge in science: turning information overload into the opportunity of the decade. Visual analytics requires interdisciplinary science beyond traditional scientific and information visualization to include statistics, mathematics, knowledge representation, management and discovery technologies, cognitive and perceptual sciences, decision sciences, and more. An important research agenda to develop the next generation suite of visual analytics technologies is available at http://nvac.pnl.gov/agenda.stm . Contributions to the special issue should help develop and/or apply the science of Visual Analytics, clearly showing an interdisciplinary approach. Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to: * Science of analytical reasoning including the human analytic discourse, sensemaking methods, perception and cognition, and collaborative visual analytics * Science of visual representations and interaction techniques including the principles for depicting information, the science of interaction, new visual paradigms, and novel systems and approaches for generating visual analytic visualization and interactions. * Data representation and transformations including scalable data signatures through statistical and semantic approaches for information (text, imagery, video, Web, ), synthesis of diverse information and data signatures within a high dimensional information space(s) for discovery of relationships, and mixed initiative systems. * Methods and tools for capturing the analytics process, producing unwrappable information packages, and story telling for specific and widely varying audiences. * Methods/tools for evaluation, security & privacy, interoperability, and technology insertion practice/experience. Papers for this special issue will be chosen from the submissions whether they are unpublished results or previously included in conference publications. Extended versions of previous conference publications should contain at least 30% new material. Some of the leading-edge research on this topic is found where geography intersects with information / library science, computer science, cognitive science, graphic design, history and other fields. The special issue of Environment and Planning B will present papers on the broad foundations, computational methods, software systems, and evaluation of such data analyses and visualizations, as they have emerged in this interdisciplinary endeavor. Given the importance of efficient knowledge and expertise management at a time of accelerating information flood, we wish to bring major researchers and their work together in this special issue to initiate a major push of research in this area. The metaphors and organizing principles provided by geographic space have received increasing recognition within these diverse disciplines. Publication in Environment and Planning B will help to further broaden the impact that spatial sciences have on efforts to organize large repositories of non-georeferenced data. List of Possible Topics We invite submissions of authors from a variety of disciplines such as geographic information science, cognitive science, digital libraries, database design, data analysis/mining, information visualization, interface design, and others. The recent special issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science on 'Mapping Knowledge Domains' http://www.pnas.org/content/vol101/suppl_1/ is a good example of the diversity of skills and theories required to map humanity's scholarly knowledge and expertise. The following are some of the topics that papers might address: • Historical, Sociological, or Philosophical Perspectives on Knowledge Mapping • Knowledge Discovery, Representation, and Diffusion • Invisible Colleges, Scientific Networks, Social Networks • Bibliometric and Scientometric Approaches • Models of the Structure and Dynamic of Scientific Disciplines • Spatial Metaphors, Geographic Principles, and Cartographic Methods • Interaction Techniques and Storytelling • Map Evaluation, Validation, and Interpretation • Case Studies and Infrastructure Development Submission Process We ask that authors send a tentative title and abstract to the editors by September 15, in order to expedite later editorial and peer review procedures. Then, by November 15, submit to both editors an electronic copy of your paper (up to 6000-8000 words; preferably in Microsoft Word format). All submissions will then undergo a rigorous peer review process to determine the contributions to appear in this special issue, in accordance with the timeline indicated below. A total of 5-6 papers will be included in this issue. Timeline Call for papers issued: July 15, 2005 Notices of Intent Due: September 15, 2005 Full papers due: November 15, 2005 Peer reviews due: January 1, 2005 Authors notified: January 15, 2005 Revisions due: March 1, 2006 About the Guest Editors André Skupin is an assistant professor of Geography at San Diego State University. Prior to this he held an associate professor position at the University of New Orleans. One of his core research interests is the application of geographic metaphors, cartographic principles, and GIS techniques in the visualization of non-geographic information. His research is strongly interdisciplinary, aimed especially at increased cross-fertilization between geography and information science. For example, he has worked on new approaches to create map-like visualizations from large document collections. Results have been published in such journals as Cartography and Geographic Information Science, IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications, Computing in Science and Engineering, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Skupin is currently co-editing a book on applications of self-organizing maps in geographic information science for Wiley. He has served on program committees of the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Geographers (AAG) and of a number of international workshops dealing with digital library interfaces.
