--------------------------------------------------------------------- APGV 08: FIFTH SYMPOSIUM ON APPLIED PERCEPTION IN GRAPHICS AND VISUALIZATION Co-located with ACM Siggraph in Los Angeles, USA 9th - 10th August, 2008 http://www.apgv.org CALL FOR PARTICIPATION --------------------------------------------------------------------- Research in computer graphics and visualization has great potential to benefit from, and contribute to, research in perception. Since 2004, this symposium has brought together researchers from the fields of perception, graphics, and visualization, to facilitate a wider exchange of ideas. Submissions are invited in the broad range of areas at the intersection of computer graphics, visualization, and perception to fulfill two goals of this multidisciplinary community. Goal 1. Use insights from perception to advance the design of methods for visual, auditory and haptic representation. Specific examples include, but are not limited to: * applications of insights from perception to the development of algorithms for more efficient, effective or realistic modeling, rendering and/or animation * applications of perception in the design and evaluation of methods for more effective representation and communication of data * computational aesthetics, stylization and perceptual aspects of non-photorealistic rendering * perceptual issues arising due to fusion of digital imaging, computer vision, and computer graphics techniques * perception-inspired interfaces for immersive activities in virtual worlds Goal 2. Advance and facilitate novel basic perception and cognition research that uses and is relevant to applications in computer graphics and visualization. Here specific examples include, but are not limited to: * perception and visuomotor control in computer games, virtual and augmented environments * fundamental contributions in spatial and temporal vision * integration of empirical perception research with computational models * color vision and color appearance modeling * the influence of attention and eye movements on visual perception and visual memory * statistical learning and perception of natural scenes * perception of shapes, surfaces and materials * visual illusions and perceptual organization having potential to enhance image depiction Proceedings, which will include the poster abstracts, will be published by ACM SIGGRAPH. Geospatial Visual Analytics Workshop at the GIScince 2008 Conference (Park City, Utah, USA, 23-26 September 2008) and Special Issue of the CaGIS journal (provisional issue Vol.36 No.3, July 2009) The workshop is a follow-up to the successful workshop on “Visualization, Analytics and Spatial Decision Support” at the GIScience’2006 conference. The previous workshop attracted about 70 participants. Selected workshop papers, including the "Setting the research agenda" paper, were published as a special issue of IJGIS, v.21(8), 2007. The workshop supported by the Commission on GeoVisualization (http://geoanalytics.net/ica) of the International Cartographic Association aims at bringing together researchers from relevant fields to address research issues of geospatial visual analytics in the multidisciplinary context of GI Science. A big part of data that the modern society deals with has both spatial and temporal characteristics. Visualisation of spatial and temporal data traditionally belongs to the research area known as geographic visualisation, or geovisualisation. Geovisual Analytics (short for Geospatial Visual Analytics) extends geovisualisation research by enhancing purely visual and interactive methods with new possibilities provided by computational techniques such as data mining, statistics, and optimisation. Potential enhancements come also from developing methods to support analytical reasoning, argumentation, knowledge building, and knowledge communication. The frontier research problems in Geovisual Analytics involve the scalability of tools and their usability. The goal of the workshop is to present the most advanced methods and applications of geovisual analytics, discuss problems and possible approaches to solving them, and define appropriate directions for further research. Major scientific topics to be addressed: - scalability - how to make visualisation suitable for huge data sets (e.g. with the help of database technologies and data mining); - usability – how to fit the tools to the needs, abilities and conditions of different categories of users (for example, domain experts vs. decision makers); - effectiveness - how to ensure the effectiveness of visual analytics tools and how to test and prove it; - innovative visually driven methods of data analysis addressing the problems of scalability, usability, and effectiveness. Challenging applications of geovisual analytics: - decision support: * generation, evaluation and comparison of alternatives, * accounting for uncertainty of decision recommendations, * explanation, justification, and communication of results; - education: enhancing learning and knowledge transfer; - scientific research: acquiring new knowledge; - collaboration: supporting communication, cooperative problem solving and knowledge construction. Authors are invited to submit original research contributions or application reports in English. The authors are requested to stress the multidisciplinary character of their approaches and their relevance to the theme of the workshop. We encourage submissions presenting early stages of cutting-edge research and development, as well as submissions from PhD students. Call for papers: GeoVisualization of Dynamics, Movement and Change Workshop at the AGILE 2008 Conference (Girona, Spain, May 2008) and Special Issue of the Information Visualization journal (provisional issue Vol.7 No.3) The theme for the workshop and this special issue of Information Visualization is the use of GeoVisualization and GeoVisual Analytics approaches for exploring and analysing large data sets with spatial and temporal components. Original papers are solicited in this area. In particular, we encourage innovative papers detailing the visualization methods supported by and integrated with data mining and other computational processing. The workshop will provide participants with the possibility to present ongoing and developing work without committing to a full journal paper. The journal special issue will provide participants with the opportunity of reporting their work in a refereed journal. The 2008 International Symposium on Collaborative Technologies and Systems (CTS 2008) CALL FOR PAPERS Special Session on Visualization and Collaboration May 19-23, 2008 The Hyatt Regency Irvine Irvine, California, USA Submission Deadline: January 7, 2008 Brief Description: In many collaborative situations, multiple distributed users simultaneously interact with and analyze complex information while sharing their results with others. It is through such collaboration that multiple users bring their expertise to bear on a particular problem to analyze incomplete information and reach collaborative decisions. Such collaboration is far more effective when users collaborate by interacting with meaningful visualizations that accurately depict shared information. Visualizations must present information in a manner that is easily understood by individuals with different expertise and perspectives on the problem at hand. Users must be able to interact with the visualization to highlight or manipulate information in a natural way that is readily observed by other participants. This special session on Visualization and Collaboration - to be held as part of the 2008 International Symposium on Collaborative Technologies and Systems (CTS'08) - will focus on visualization and its role in collaboration. The objective is to highlight key issues and solutions for interactive visualization in a collaborative environment. We invite original contributions from researchers and practitioners in academia, government, and industry in this emerging visualization specialty. PhD candidate in Information Visualization and personalization technologies for eLearning ======================================================== The New Media in Education Laboratory at University of Lugano (Faculty of Communication Sciences) is seeking a high motivated PhD candidate for the EU-FP7 funded project GRAPPLE in the fields of Information Visualization, eLearning, and adaptive systems. The main topic of research will be advanced and intelligent technologies for the personalization of the learning experience, with a focus on adaptive systems. A specific research goal will be related to these topics and in particular will explore the use of graphical representations that enable the learners to interact with and explore their history towards gaining insights into their learning processes. REQUIREMENTS - Master degree in Computer Science, Information technologies or a related area. - Excellent programming skills, preferably in PHP and Java, with documented portfolio of work samples. - Experience or interest in Information Visualization, advanced visual interfaces, and adaptive systems. DUTIES Duties will include analysis, design and programming tasks. In particular: - Design and implementation of methods and techniques for the interactive visualization of domain and user models, and of performance data from an adaptive learning system - Extend the Open Souce Learning System Moodle (http://moodle.org) to integrate features and technologies that will be developed in the context of the project. Both managers and responders deal with large volumes of data from a variety of sources that they must evaluate, correlate, and use to make time-critical decisions. Collaborative visualizations of data can help collocated and distributed teams maintain situational awareness. In practice, most collaborative use of visualizations occurs during planning; during an incident, use of visualization may be relegated to the individual's realm while collaboration may revert to audio channels. We seek research on the use of visualization to improve decision making, dissemination of information, and collaboration during crisis response and management.
