New book on graphical data analysis

Hi everyone, just a brief note regarding a book that might be equally of interest for infovis researchers as well as for infovis users. "Interactive Graphics for Data Analysis: Principles and Examples" is divided into two parts. The first part illustrates general principles how graphical methods are most efficiently used to analyze data. The second part uses nine real world datasets to show the application of these techniques as nine fully worked out case studies. The book uses the Mondrian visualization tool (http://mondrian.theusRus.de) throughout the book, though the techniques and case studies are presented (almost) independently from any specific implementation. A 30 page appendix gives a quick overview and introduction of the Mondrian software. Call for Participation: Interacting with temporal data a workshop at CHI 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts http://temporal.csail.mit.edu/ Is time just another attribute of data? Or is it something more? We are interested in gathering together a diverse group of researchers who deal with time as a fundamental component of interactive systems: sometimes as a resource, sometimes as a problem to be solved. Our goal is to investigate the temporal dimension in user interfaces, across disciplines. Time brings meaning to data, especially data about the real world. Time is also essential for understanding human activity and an essential element of design processes. Sometimes we address time explicitly, sometimes implicitly. It structures how people interact with computers, but is also a measurable effect of that interaction. The goal of this workshop is to explore human-computer interaction from a temporal perspective. This workshop is not a mini-conference but will be highly interactive, participatory and hands-on, with a combination of whole-group focused discussion and small-group brainstorming. We will define problems, generate ideas and share common concerns that arise in our research, including data capture, log management, and visualization of human activity over time. Our goal is to create a community of people interested in these issues and to create a special issue of a journal that explores them in greater depth. Participation We invite researchers and interaction designers who explore the use of time in interactive systems. Our goal is to bring together people with diverse perspectives, practices and problems. Participants should submit a short position paper paper (2-4 pages) that addresses an issue concerning temporal data or time in interactive systems, including: * A particular application domain of interest * The nature of temporal data this domain: structure, frequency, significance. * Principal interaction challenges pertaining to data capture, sharing, or use within this domain. * Particular techniques and approaches that you have personally tried (if any). * One (most important) interaction challenge that that you wish to discuss or solve. 9th International Symposium on SMART GRAPHICS http://www.smartgraphics.org/ May 28-30 2009 Salamanca, Spain Submission deadline January 23rd, 2009 Graphics become Smart Graphics when their design and implementation are grounded in an understanding of human abilities, activities, and motivations from design experience and the broad spectrum of cognitive and social sciences. When knowledge from these diverse fields is combined with new methods, tools and techniques in AI, HCI and computer graphics, environments are created that: (1) engage the user and are aesthetically satisfying; (2) participate in human cognition as external or distributed representations; (3) are sensitive to the real-time demands of the interaction in the context of the available informational and computational resources; (4) adapt the form of the output according to a wider set of constraints such as an individual's perceptual, attentive, and motor abilities and the nature of the presentation media and available interaction devices. The International Symposium on Smart Graphics aims at gathering people from the fields of Cognitive Science, Computer Graphics, Artificial Intelligence and Graphics Design to share experiences and experiments in this new and emerging area of study. *** Come and Join the Smart Graphics Experience *** Smart Graphics 2009 welcomes submissions from researchers and practitioners, as well as artists and graphic designers interested in an interdisciplinary approach to the design of smart interactive visual, auditory, and haptic displays. Data Analysis and Visual Analytics Ph.D. Fellowships The Southeast Regional Visual Analytics Center (http://srvac.uncc.edu) - a partnership between Georgia Tech and UNC Charlotte - is accepting applications for four Data Analysis and Visual Analytics PhD Fellowships, two at UNC Charlotte and two at Georgia Tech. Both universities have significant research programs in these areas, in which fellowship holders will be active participants. The Fellowships provide 2.5 academic years of support with a stipend of $2300 per month; payment of tuition and fees; and a $1500 per year for three years travel allowance to attend relevant conferences. After the fellowship period, students will be supported as Graduate Research Assistants while finishing their Ph.D. Fellowship holders will have two summer internships at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory or other laboratories conducting relevant research. As a result, a whole team of analysts is often required to make informed decisions in information-rich environments. Teams often gather formally or informally to discuss and analyze data in face-to-face meetings in order to effectively evaluate and interpret information. As such, the design of collaborative interfaces for data analysis and visual analytics is an emerging area in intelligent user interfaces. Interactive tabletops and display walls lend themselves especially well to co-located collaboration. The design of collaborative systems that offer computational support for these types of analysis scenarios, however, poses new challenges for tool designers, including: * Design of information visualization or visual analytics interfaces and environments for co-located collaborative work, * Design of visual representations for co-located collaborative work, * The use of interactive tabletop and wall displays to visualize and interact with information, * Social components in collaborative visualization environments, * Aspects of cognition in multi-user information visualization environments, * Evaluation of collaborative information visualization and visual analytics systems, * Multiple and coordinated views for collaborative data analysis systems, * Design of multi-display environments, * Collaborative visualization applications, * Experience with traditional collaboration in information intensive fields. These are the key challenges we would like to discuss in this workshop, although we welcome submissions in other related areas as well. OBJECTIVES The main objective of the workshop is to bring people from academia and industry with relevant backgrounds (e.g. information visualization, visual analytics, CSCW, HCI) together to discuss ongoing research work in the field of multi-user collaborative visualization. This includes the analysis of problems encountered in the field, the presentation of specific solutions, and the discussion of special characteristics compared to the core research areas. [apologies if you've already seen this call elsewhere...] CALL FOR PAPERS -------------------------------- 1st International Workshop on Visual Interfaces to the Social and the Semantic Web (VISSW 2009) In conjunction with IUI 2009 Sanibel Island, Florida 8th February 2009 http://www.smart-ui.org/events/vissw2009/ OBJECTIVES The advent of the Social Web (Web 2.0) and the Semantic Web has resulted in even more data created, published and consumed by users. This vast amount of data is available in various formats (text, image, video, etc.), can be presented on different platforms, and most importantly, contains linkages between different entities on the Web. The ability to easily integrate vast amounts of data from across the Social and Semantic Web raises significant and exciting research challenges, not least of which how to provide effective access to and navigation across heterogeneous data sources. However, the need for intelligent and visual human interfaces to this evolving Web is not limited simply to the modalities of searching and browsing (important as these are). As the Web continues to evolve from a read-mainly to a read-write medium, and the level of social interaction supported on the Web increases, there is also a pressing need to support end-users who engage in a wide range of online tasks, such as publishing and sharing their own data on the Web. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from different fields, such as Human-Computer Interaction, Information Visualization, Semantic Web, and Personal Information Management, to discuss latest research results and challenges in designing, implementing, and evaluating intelligent interfaces supporting access, navigation and publishing of different types of contents on the Social and Semantic Web. In addition, the workshop also serves as an opportunity for researchers to gain feedback on their work as well as to identify potential collaborations with their peers. Hi everyone, I'd like to put in a quick plug for a book that may be of interest to infovis researchers. It's titled "Information Visualization: Human-Centered Issues and Perspectives" and is the result of a summer 2007 Dagstuhl seminar. After the meeting, a number of the attendees put together some chapters related to main discussion topics there at the seminar. Please forward to all possible interested person ----------------- The INRIA GRAVITÉ project in collaboration with LaBRI (CNRS) is offering a PhD position focusing on the visual and interactive exploration of semantic networks. **The PhD project takes place within the ANR TANGUY project headed by Thalès Communications and in collaboration with Xerox (XRCE Grenoble) and the law firm FIDAL. The project aims at designing a methodology to support the incremental construction and easy use of semantic networks. The development of a (prototype) system should help law experts to deal with large document collections from which potential facts have to be identified, extracted, organized and ultimately validated or annotated. Starting from valid pieces of information extracted from text document (Xerox expertise), our goal is to offer adapted mechanisms to visualize, navigate and annotate all this information. The construction of a network of facts should follow from semantic proximity between pieces of information or from users’ knowledge. As a consequence, the interactive navigation of the network can exploit available results in graph visualization which is at the heart of our INRIA team.
