DATABASE OF VIRTUAL ART TURNS 10! WITH NEW SUBMISSION SUPPORT & NEW ARTIST SPECIALS As pioneer in the field, the collective Database of Virtual Art (DVA) has been documenting the rapidly evolving digital installation art since 1998. www.virtualart.at Beside new artist specials, which will be joined by editorial features, the DVA offers henceforth an innovative submission process: Collective documentation is supported by simplified *assist tools* to help upload information for publication in minutes. Artists, and at this point an additional 282 theorists and mediaarthistorians, are members of the collective DVA-Archive. Monthly evaluated user statistics and open source technology support the collective process. PhD candidate in Information Visualization and personalization technologies for eLearning ======================================================== The New Media in Education Laboratory at University of Lugano (Faculty of Communication Sciences) is seeking a high motivated PhD candidate for the EU-FP7 funded project GRAPPLE in the fields of Information Visualization, eLearning, and adaptive systems. The main topic of research will be advanced and intelligent technologies for the personalization of the learning experience, with a focus on adaptive systems. A specific research goal will be related to these topics and in particular will explore the use of graphical representations that enable the learners to interact with and explore their history towards gaining insights into their learning processes. REQUIREMENTS - Master degree in Computer Science, Information technologies or a related area. - Excellent programming skills, preferably in PHP and Java, with documented portfolio of work samples. - Experience or interest in Information Visualization, advanced visual interfaces, and adaptive systems. DUTIES Duties will include analysis, design and programming tasks. In particular: - Design and implementation of methods and techniques for the interactive visualization of domain and user models, and of performance data from an adaptive learning system - Extend the Open Souce Learning System Moodle (http://moodle.org) to integrate features and technologies that will be developed in the context of the project. Both managers and responders deal with large volumes of data from a variety of sources that they must evaluate, correlate, and use to make time-critical decisions. Collaborative visualizations of data can help collocated and distributed teams maintain situational awareness. In practice, most collaborative use of visualizations occurs during planning; during an incident, use of visualization may be relegated to the individual's realm while collaboration may revert to audio channels. We seek research on the use of visualization to improve decision making, dissemination of information, and collaboration during crisis response and management. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Synthesis of novel information from diverse data sources * Visualization on hand-held devices for responders in the field * Collaborative information displays for remote and collocated teams * Innovative visual analytics techniques for events across space and time * Scalable representations of very large volumes of highly heterogeneous data * Analytical reasoning including the human analytic discourse, knowledge discovery methods, perception and cognition, and collaborative visual analytics * Presentation, production, and dissimilation methods including methods and tools for capturing the analytics process, and story telling for specific and varying audiences This is an Academic Session: We invite researchers from academia or research labs to present their research or research-in-progress papers. These activities are often exploratory in nature and can take place over days, weeks or months and rarely follow a predefined or linear workflow. While the overall use of information visualizations is accelerating, the growth of techniques for the evaluation of these systems has been slow. To understand these complex behaviors, evaluation efforts should be targeted at the component level, the system level, and the work environment level. The commonly used evaluation metrics such as task time completion and number of errors appear insufficient to quantify the quality of an information visualization system; thus the name of the workshop: “beyond time and errors …”. BELIV’08 aims at gathering researchers in the field to continue the exploration of novel evaluation methods, and to structure the knowledge on evaluation in information visualization around a schema, where researchers can easily identify unsolved problems and research gaps. please excuse cross-postings ISEA 2008 :: July 25 - August 3 Call for Papers, Panels and Artist Presentations We cordially invite submissions to the conference of the International Symposium on Electronic Art 2008 that will be held in Singapore between 25th - 30th July 2008. The conference is held alongside workshops, courses, exhibitions, performances and other in-conjunction events that will be held for the duration of ISEA2008 from 25th July to August 3rd 2008. The conference, as in previous ISEAs, is expected to bring together artists, theorists, historians, curators and researchers of media arts from around the world to jointly explore the most urgent and exciting questions in the field. The five themes of ISEA2008 are especially focused on eliciting a wide range of international scholars and artists. Conference Programme The conference programme will include competitively selected, peer-reviewed individual papers and panel presentations. This year we are also encouraging artists who wish to share their works with a broader audience of their peers to submit artist presentations where they can speak about the specific aesthetic, conceptual and technological aspects of their works. The conference also promises to present a list of internationally renowned Keynote Speakers expounding on the major themes of the conference. There will also be a special lecture delivered by a Nobel Laureate. Call for Proposals We welcome contributions from creative practitioners and researchers from a variety of disciplines and institutional contexts as media arts benefits from and exemplifies the interdisciplinary linkages between contemporary art, science, technology and their related philosophies, pedagogies and institutional practices. The submissions must address or be of relevance to at least one of the themes of ISEA2008 in order to be considered for inclusion in the conference. The conference will be of interest to those working in but not limited to the following areas: media art, contemporary art, design, art history and theory, film and media studies, gaming, toy design, human-computer interaction, cultural studies, literary studies, musicology, sound studies, theatre, dance and performance studies, science, technology and society studies, history of science and history of technology, philosophy, history, gender studies, political science, anthropology, sociology and geography. Submission requirements: We only require abstracts (not more than 300 words) of the proposed paper, panel presentations and artist presentations to be submitted in either Text, RTF, Word or PDF formats via this site. Please do not submit full papers at this stage. While we encourage submissions to include relevant images, it would be useful if the formats in which such images are submitted is restricted to low resolution jpegs. In the case of submissions for artists presentations, artists are encouraged to provide links to their and/or relevant websites. The deadline for submissions will be 31st August 2007. VizSEC 2007 Workshop on Visualization for Computer Security http://vizsec.org/workshop2007/ The VizSEC 2007 Workshop on Visualization for Computer Security will be held in conjunction with IEEE Vis 2007 and IEEE InfoVis 2007 in Sacramento, CA USA between October 28 and November 1, 2007. We are still waiting to hear the exact date of the event from conference organizers. This year's workshop will be an incubator for new ideas related to security visualization, a forum for garnering feedback from peers, and a place to identify and meet potential collaborators. We are currently in discussion with a publisher to release the proceedings from this year's workshop in book form. Please see the web site (http://vizsec.org/workshop2007/) for more information, and stay tuned for updates, author instructions, and submission instructions. Also, please note that there is a new web site for the VizSEC community, http://vizsec.org/.
