InfoVis colleagues: You may be aware of the NVAC (National Visualization and Analytics Center) research program sponsored here in the U.S. at the Pacific Northwest National Labs. (See http://nvac.pnl.gov for more info.) This research program focuses on the area of visual analytics which is certainly related to and shares many motivations with information visualization. We have created a Visual Analytics Digital Library to house visual analytics-related educational materials including course notes, slides, video lectures, homework assignments, exam questions, papers, etc. This note is simply to advertise the website and to encourage you to submit materials that may be relevant to visual analytics. (I am uploading video lectures from my infovis class into the library this spring, for instance.) The URL for the site is http://vadl.cc.gatech.edu. Please take a look and do consider submitting some of your materials. There is a submission form on the site that assists with this process. Visual Analytics is the science of analytical reasoning supported by highly interactive visual interfaces. The issues stimulating this body of research provide a grand challenge in science: turning information overload into the opportunity of the decade. Since 2004, APGV has brought together researchers from the fields of perception, graphics and visualization, to facilitate a wider exchange of ideas. Our goals are to use insights from perception to advance the design of methods for visual, auditory and haptic representation, and to use computer graphics to enable perceptual research that would otherwise not be possible. Submissions are invited in the broad range of areas at the intersection of computer graphics, visualization and perception. Specific examples include, but are not limited to: * applications of insights from perception to the development of algorithms for more efficient, effective or realistic modeling, rendering and/or animation * applications of perception in the design and evaluation of methods for more effective representation and communication of data * the study of perception and perceptual issues in virtual environments * computational aesthetics, stylization, and perceptual aspects of non-photorealistic rendering Submissions are particularly welcome in all areas of basic perception research that have applications in computer graphics and visualization. Proceedings, which will include the poster abstracts, will be published by ACM SIGGRAPH. ** The submission deadline for the IEEE Computer Graphics and Application special issue "Discovering the Unexpected" has been extended to January 16. 2007. ** Discovering the Unexpected Guest Editors: Kris Cook and Rae Earnshaw Special Issue of IEEE CG&A, September/October 2007 Submissions Due: 16 January 2006 The need to make sense of all types of complex, conflicting, and dynamic information has provided the impetus for new tools and technologies that combine the strengths of visualization with powerful underlying algorithms and innovative interaction techniques. These tools are part of the emerging field of visual analytics. This marriage of computation, visual representation, and interactive thinking supports intensive analysis. The goal is not only to permit users to detect expected events, such as might be predicted by models, but also to help users discover the unexpected- the surprising anomalies, changes, patterns, and relationships that are then examined and assessed to develop new insight. For this special issue of IEEE CG&A, we solicit papers that describe innovative results in visual analytics, with an emphasis on applications that support discovery and assessment of the unexpected. Potential topics include, but are not limited to ■ interaction techniques to support analytical reasoning; ■ mathematical representations and transformations; ■ visual analysis of dynamic or multitype data; ■ visual analysis of text, audio, video, image, or structured data; ■ information synthesis and data fusion; ■ visual representations; ■ collaborative visual analytics; ■ representation of uncertainty; ■ representation of context; ■ spatial and temporal analyses; ■ off-the-desktop applications (for example, handheld devices and large displays); ■ novel approaches for communicating analytic findings; ■ evaluation techniques; ■ new models of interaction, and interaction styles; ■ real-time data analysis within critical response time constraints; ■ case studies of applications demonstrating how the unexpected has been discovered; and ■ new results in the underlying science of visual analytical reasoning. Articles should be no more than 10 magazine pages, where a page is 800 words and a quarter page image counts as 200 words. Virtual Reality and Cognition

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Research scientist: Invitation for applications from researchers in the field of "Virtual Reality and Cognition" LIMSI, a multidisciplinary research unit within the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) located on the Orsay campus of the University of Paris-Sud (France), is currently developing research on "Virtual Reality and Cognition". The development of an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) system, with funding from the CNRS and the Ile-de-France Region, is part of a broader project in which the cognitive sciences will play a major role. LIMSI has embarked on a virtual and augmented reality project that will involve both designing multimodal immersive interaction methods and using these technologies in various fields of application. LIMSI also intends to develop the potential applications of VR in setting up scientific interactions between engineering and the cognitive sciences. This project has two main purposes: (a) to ensure that the development of the VR interfaces at LIMSI benefits from expertise in cognitive ergonomics; (b) to ensure that in the specific areas studied at LIMSI, VR can be used to investigate cognitive functions in people interacting with these systems. LIMSI already includes specialists in cognitive psychology, and this will facilitate this further line of development. The objective of LIMSI is to invest new types of competence in this project so that it can successfully carry out the mission with which it has been entrusted by the CNRS. The suitable candidate for this development project will be a specialist in psychology and/or cognitive ergonomics, or possibly the cognitive neurosciences, and who intends to submit an application during the next round of CNRS recruitments (December 2006/January 2007). Traditional data analysis techniques excel at uncovering anomalous or otherwise interesting patterns in large quantities of information, reducing great volume and complexity to human scale. On the other hand, humans can easily detect many patterns that computer software cannot, and human intelligence is uniquely able to to supervise automated analysis techniques to provide context and infer more significant meaning. The largely visual orientation of the human perceptual/cognitive system suggests that visualization approaches offer the most promising avenue for coupling machine and human pattern discovery and reasoning processes. Visualization and automated data analysis technologies have largely evolved independently of one another, however. This workshop will seek to explore the intersection between these fields, towards the goal of better defining the characteristics of next-generation problem solving tools. We will encourage submissions from a diverse range of fields, including not only the data analysis and visualization communities, but also researchers in the fields of cognitive and perceptual science, knowledge management, and linguistics. These are likely to manifest as both novel devices and as devices embedded in common objects such as refrigerators, automobiles, toys, furniture, clothes, even our bodies. While this vision of the future has prompted great advancements in context-aware computing, wireless connectivity, multi-sensor platforms, smart materials, and location-tracking technologies, there is a concern that this proliferation of technology will cause us to become increasingly overwhelmed by information. This scenario moves us away from Weiser's notion of calm technology, which proposes that information should move seamlessly between the periphery and the center of our attention. Weiser stated that good technology should not be experienced as technology at all, and we believe that ambient information systems could support this claim. Ambient information systems (which include ambient, peripheral, glance-able, and subtle displays) are non-invasive and provide useful information while blending smoothly into our surroundings. These technologies are meant to be minimally attended and perceivable from outside the range of a person's direct attention, providing pre-attentive processing without being overly distracting. Examples range from large ubiquitous public displays to small bouncing icons on the Macintosh's dock. There have been many interesting implementations of ambient information systems (e.g., AmbientDevices’Stock Orb, Koert van Mensvoort's Datafountain, Philips Electronics' Ambilight, Jafarinami et al.'s Breakaway, Mynatt et al.'s Audio Aura and Digital Family Portrait, and Mankoff et al.'s Daylight Display and BusMobile). However, ambient information systems research is is suffering from a lack of consensus on terminology, methodology, plausibility, and the general design space of ambient information. We see this workshop as an opportunity for invited participants to explore and discuss such issues. OBJECTIVE ---------- The purpose of this workshop is to explore topics of ambient information with respect to the various technologies and smart materials with which they might be implemented; identify problems in design, development, and evaluation; and derive new fundamental questions that need to be addressed. Workshop attendees should leave with a better understanding of what ambient is and next steps to further research in this domain. Questions we would like to address in this workshop include: · How are ambient information systems distinct from other information technologies? (i.e., what defines technology as being ambient?) · What are the appropriate methods for evaluating ambient information systems? · How much ambient information can one perceive and comprehend correctly? · What sorts of information are best conveyed by an ambient display? · What are examples of useful heuristics, frameworks, taxonomies, or design principles for implementation of ambient information? · What, if any, are the appropriate interaction methods for these information devices? · How can we best make use of existing technologies? (e.g. smart materials, wearable systems, etc.) · How do we measure the impact of ambient information systems? · What knowledge from other domains should we apply such systems? (e.g. art, cognitive science, design, psychology, sociology) WORKSHOP FORMAT ---------------- The workshop format will consist of a short presentation by each participant, which should conclude with a problem statement relative to the workshop topics. These problem statements will be ordered, and the participants will decide which are most relevant to future research on ambient and subtle information systems. We will then break out into groups and discuss strategies for addressing the selected topics. SUBMISSIONS ------------ We invite submissions including descriptions of works in progress, research contributions, position statements and demonstrations. Submissions should attempt to address one or more of the aforementioned questions regarding the design and evaluation of ambient information technologies. Submissions should be between 4 and 6 pages long in ACM SIGCHI Proceedings format (http://www.sigchi.org/chipubform/) Each submission must conclude with a specific question regarding issues faced conducting research in this domain.
