This position is for a research scientist that will define and build compelling, leading-edge experimental software systems that will pave the way for exciting new Agilent products addressing these measurement domains. Areas of possible focus include: - Visual integration of diverse data at multiple levels of abstraction and from multiple, linked perspectives. - Information exploration tools that enable the user to interpret data coming from multiple measurement platforms. - Intuitive user navigation of large and possibly disjoint data sets. - Graphical presentation of complex data and derived information, including non-structured information such as scientific text. - Multi-modal interaction - augmentation of the visual channel w/ sonification, haptic interfaces. - Representation of information over multiple spatial and/or temporal dimensions. - Collaborative sensemaking - information sharing, presentation, annotation. - Modeling/simulation/prediction. - Representing uncertainty - visualizing contradictory information, alternatives, imprecision. QUALIFICATIONS - PhD or equivalent research experience in computer science, mathematics or related field. - A minimum of 3-5 years postgraduate experience (academic or industrial) and a demonstrated record of scientific contribution and publication - Demonstrated success in envisioning, creating, leading and pursuing broad, independently initiated strategic projects in information visualization and/or visual analytics. - Outstanding software development skills, particularly in exploratory prototyping, including fluency in object-oriented programming and user interface programming, preferably in Java, C++ and/or C#. - A history of strong contribution in working with scalable systems, very large datasets and integrating software tools into larger systems to solve complex problems. - Flexibility in applying skills to new problem domains with the cooperation of appropriate domain experts. - Excellent leadership, teamwork, problem solving and communication skills. ---------------------------------------------- PhD position in Collaborative Visual Analytics ---------------------------------------------- Within the scope of the SNF project "Humanitics: Visual Analytics for All", we are currently looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and open-minded PhD student. The project is a collaboration between the University of Fribourg and the United Nations in Geneva. Its goal is to support UN people in performing collaborative visual data analysis through web-based interactive visualization. Visual analytics is the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. The student will study current practices and develop interactive visualization tools to support collaborative knowledge discovery, consolidation, and communication. The PhD thesis will be built over the analysis, design, development and evaluation of prototypes, managing real world data and being in direct touch with humanitarian users. Ideal candidates should have a Master in Computer Science (or related fields) and experience with some or all of the following: - Information visualization (or user interface design) - Human-computer interaction - Evaluation of interactive systems Proficiency in English and good programming skills are also required (experience with web-based UI programming is a plus). This vast amount of data is available in various formats (text, image, video, etc.), can be presented on different platforms, and most importantly, contains linkages between different entities on the Web. The ability to easily integrate vast amounts of data from across the Social and Semantic Web raises significant and exciting research challenges, not least of which how to provide effective access to and navigation across heterogeneous data sources. However, the need for intelligent and visual human interfaces to this evolving Web is not limited simply to the modalities of searching and browsing (important as these are). As the Web continues to evolve from a read-mainly to a read-write medium, and the level of social interaction supported on the Web increases, there is also a pressing need to support end-users who engage in a wide range of online tasks, such as publishing and sharing their own data on the Web. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from different fields, such as Human-Computer Interaction, Information Visualization, Semantic Web, and Personal Information Management, to discuss latest research results and challenges in designing, implementing, and evaluating intelligent interfaces supporting access, navigation and publishing of different types of contents on the Social and Semantic Web. We invite submissions in all areas related to the Evaluation of Visual Analytics. SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY UNIVERSITY OF BIRMINGHAM, UK Research Fellow in the perception of 3-D shape and surface reflectance A Wellcome Trust funded position is available to work on a collaborative project between Dr Andrew Welchman (University of Birmingham), Dr Roland Fleming (Max-Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics, Germany) and Prof. Andrew Blake (Microsoft Research, Cambridge, UK). The successful applicant will combine computational image analysis, psychophysical measurements and modelling to examine the perception of 3-D shape from specular highlights. The work makes use of state-of-the-art rendering techniques and provides the opportunity to work with a high dynamic range display. Research will be conducted within well-equipped labs that incorporate a range of bespoke equipment. The 5* School of Psychology provides an excellent working environment with a pronounced research focus and international expertise in Vision Science, Behavioural Neuroscience and Cognitive Neuroscience. Facilities include an Imaging Centre with integrated equipment for the study of human brain and behaviour (3T scanner, EEG) as well as numerous virtual reality devices and eye trackers. Candidates should hold (or expect to hold) a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics or a related field. VizSEC 2008 Workshop on Visualization for Cyber Security http://vizsec.org/workshop2008/ September 15, 2008 / Cambridge, MA USA In conjunction with RAID 2008 Extended submission deadlines: Poster and Demo submissions - August 1, 2008 The 5th International Workshop on Visualization for Cyber Security will provide a forum for new research in visualization for computer security. We are pleased to be holding this year's meeting in conjunction with the 11th International Symposium on Recent Advances in Intrusion Detection. The VizSec Workshop will be held at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts USA on Monday, September 15, 2008. The full and short paper deadline has passed. We are accepting submissions (2 page abstract) for posters and demonstrations. Poster and Demo abstracts will be made available on the VizSec web site. This year's VizSec Keynote Speaker will be Ben Shneiderman, Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Founding Director (1983-2000) of the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory, and Member of the Institute for Advanced Computer Studies at the University of Maryland at College Park. Dr. Shneiderman will give a presentation entitled Information Forensics: Harnessing visualization to support discovery. As a result of previous VizSec workshops, we have seen both the application of existing visualization techniques to security problems and the development of novel security visualization approaches. However, VizSec research has focused on helping human analysts to detect anomalies and patterns, particularly in computer network defense. Other communities, led by researchers from the RAID Symposia, have researched automated methods for detecting anomalies and malicious activity. The theme for this year's workshop, which will be held in conjunction with RAID 2008, will be on bridging the gap between visualization and automation, such as leveraging the power of visualization to create rules for intrusion detection and defense systems. We encourage VizSec participants to stay for the RAID Symposium and RAID participants to come a day early to participate in VizSec. There will be a discount for joint registration. GAZING INTO THE 21st CENTURY Second international conference on Image Science in Goettweig October 16th -18th 2008 www.donau-uni.ac.at/dis Never before has the world of images changed so fast and the way images are produced transformed so drastically as in recent times. Second Life, Micromovies, Flickr, Virtual Reality, YouTube, Visual Music, Scientific Visualisation, Google Earth etc. are keywords standing for a multitude of new possibilities for individual producing, projecting and distributing of visual material. The images historical development between innovation, reflection and iconoclasm reaches a new level of global complexity in the 21st century. These transformations have hit society to a large extent unprepared. Nevertheless we have to recognize that we will not be able to handle the knowledge burst of our time without further development of new forms of visualization and orders of visibility. What inspiration do these new worlds of images gain from art? What influence does the medium have on the iconic character of the image? What chances and challenges do image dealers and museums face with the liquidity of the image? Together with international colleagues from science and art and keynotes by Felice FRANKEL (Harvard University, MIT), Barbara STAFFORD (Chicago) and Peter WEIBEL (ZKM) the conference will discuss the inventory, classification and historiography of the recent worlds of images concerning the worlds of art, popular culture and science.
