Machine Learning Methods in Visualisation will be held as part of EuroVis 2023 in Leipzig, Germany. The eighth edition of this co-located event will be part-tutorial and part-workshop so as to increase the interaction between researchers. Part of the MLVis 2023 programme will consist of short papers. We solicit short papers on machine learning methods in visualisation from both the machine learning and visualisation communities, addressing how the two technologies can be used together to provide greater insight to end users. The successful candidate will join IDI’s dynamic team of 90+ academics, researchers, PhD students, software research engineers and professional services staff and their dedicated fully equipped lab spaces for data visualization, digital fabrication, and public and student engagement. The University of Edinburgh is one of the top 5 UK universities. In the recent REF2021 assessment exercise, the School of Informatics was the computer science department with the largest research power (i.e., the combination of size and research excellence) in the UK. The School of Informatics and the School of Design both have well established connections with UK and international funding schemes. For example, as one of the founding partners of the UK's Alan Turing Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, staff and research students within IDI have opportunities to interact with PhD students, research fellows and senior researchers within the Turing Institute's network of partners, fostering further collaborations. Candidates We are open to applications from candidates across the whole spectrum of subject areas and fields where design intersects with computer science, human-computer interaction, data science, or artificial intelligence. We are seeking applicants who can complement the existing strengths of the team, and who are able to take a strategic lead on the technical research agenda within IDI and build a strong research group within the institute. We are therefore very interested in applicants who explore the fusion of design with, for example,interactive and explainable machine learning, human-computer interaction, natural language interfaces and human-centred approaches to NLP, computer vision, human-robot interaction, multi-modal and intelligent interfaces, visual analytics, and immersive environments in virtual, mixed reality and cross-device interaction. This new appointment will contribute to the Institute’s diverse research, teaching and entrepreneurship activities, help shape the future of its unique interdisciplinary Master’s programme, and build their own portfolio of externally funded research. The description provided in the paper should be complete enough that a competent/qualified graduate student in visual information communication could implement or apply the work and should provide a formal/informal evaluation and discussion regarding its strengths and weaknesses. Art Papers: This track serves as a link between arts, technology and science by offering creative views and artistic applications. We are especially interested in the submissions that demonstrate tangible and artistic ways of visual information communication, and address information aesthetics. The topics range from experimental and interdisciplinary case studies and methodologies, novel and critical interfaces for VINCI topics to critical analysis of theory and reference works in the field. Young Talent Summit Papers: This track serves as a link between young students and Academica by offering creative views and various research applications. Young Talent Summit aims to encourage young potential scholars, such as high school students, to present their original research/findings for the analysis and visualization in the advanced technologies. The topics range from experimental and interdisciplinary applications to critical analysis. There are two formats: short (≤ 4 pages) and poster (≤ 2 pages). The short paper demonstrates an in-depth analysis and a relatively novel contribution, while the poster paper shares alternative approaches, ideas or experiments. *** ART GALLERY *** The VINCI Art Gallery celebrates artistic creation that demonstrate conceptual and technological innovation related to visual information communication and interaction. We accept project types include data art, generative art, interactive graphics, real-time simulation, scientific illustration, creative and critical visualization, and more. The art gallery call is open-theme, and this year we especially encourage artworks that respond to environmental and health issues or explore the relationship between art and science. Projects that thoughtfully engage with recent popular interests in machine learning, blockchain, and metaverse are also welcome. Artwork submissions to the Art Gallery should include a 1-to-2-page poster / description / artist’s statement. The artwork should be completed within the last 5 years (in or after 2018) and ready to be installed. Dear Visualization Community, VIS Summer Camp is an annual event that promotes a peer support and mentoring group that helps to develop junior faculty without tenure whose research area spans visualization. This experience provides a unique mentoring opportunity that complements the available resources to faculty who are starting to navigate the world of academia and aids their transition from graduate school or postdoctoral positions to the following career stages. The camp is designed as a two-year event aimed at taking a small group and developing a sense of camaraderie and belonging to support retention. The second year is focused on more intensive development of crucial milestones toward success, such as developing NSF CRII and CAREER, DOE ECRP, or DOD YIP proposals. We accept a small cohort of participants and organize a retreat with intense discussions and collaborations over two days. We've just started recruiting the next 2-yr cohort. As such, maps continue to play a central role as the basis for a wide variety of interactive tools and applications in our modern digital age as well. This workshop aims to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners interested in maps and map-like visualizations as the underlying physical, theoretical, or metaphorical framework for designing interfaces and interactions. This workshop will create a common ground and a collaborative space for sharing design, research, and practical expertise to aid its participants with creating novel future map-based designs in different fields, including visualization, visual design, interaction design, user interface design, and cartography. This workshop is part of INTERACT 2023, and is supported by the IFIP TC 13 Working Group on Human-Centred Technology for Sustainability (WG 13.10). CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ----------------------- The primary objective of this workshop is to create common ground and a collaborative space for sharing design, research, and practical expertise, practices, learnings, and experiences to help its participants with creating novel future map-based designs in different fields, including visualization, visual design, interaction design, user interface design, and cartography. Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a short paper describing their interests and work related to the topics of this workshop. Some of the main topics to be covered by this workshop will include, but not limited to, the following: – Research and design foundations of map-based interfaces and interactions. – Theories, principles and practices guiding the design of map-based interfaces and interactions. – Applications of map-based interfaces and interactions, in areas such environment, sustainability, epidemiology, healthcare, education, and entertainment. – User evaluations of map-based interfaces and interactions. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE ----------------------- This one-day workshop will be informal and interactive, combining short presentations of the accepted workshop papers with group discussions, aimed at assisting the authors and other participants with developing their research and design ideas. The workshop will also include a hands-on group activity. As part of this, the workshop participants will work in small groups to perform map-based tasks and create design sketches for an interactive application. The designs will then be shared at the main conference. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will, however, be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary.
