A EuroVis short paper describes a more focused and concise research contribution and is likely to have a smaller — yet still significant — scope of contribution than a full paper. Short papers draw from the same paper types as full papers, as well as the same list of suggested topics. Content will be aimed towards advanced PhD students, postdoctoctoral researchers, and industry and public sector professionals, but MS and BS students are also welcome and can earn course credit. Registration fee: 300 EUR Accommodation: 39 EUR/day (per person in twin bed room in luxurious villa with sauna) Credits: 5 ECTS (University of Oulu course code 521154S) Stage 1 application deadline: March 13, 2023. This workshop will provide an overview of the theoretical foundations, hardware/software technologies, and interaction techniques necessary to begin creating optimally effective virtual reality experiences. Structured as a mixture of theory and practice, the workshop will also provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience by implementing 3D user interfaces and developing a prototype VR application motivated by a social good problem. Major learning objectives include: - Understanding virtual reality technologies, including displays, motion tracking, and input devices, and software frameworks such as the Unreal game engine, - Gaining familiarity with both current and future applications of virtual reality, especially those that address societal challenges and contribute to social good, - Learning about the design and implementation of 3D interaction techniques, including navigation, selection, manipulation, and system control, - Thinking critically about what makes a virtual reality experience effective and compelling (and conversely, what doesn’t), - Gaining practical experience in developing a virtual reality application that applies 3D user interface best practices. In this workshop, we will be using the Unreal game engine, blueprints and C++. Prior experience with these specific tools is not expected. However, students should have solid programming skills in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Java, C++, Python, etc.) and be comfortable with consulting documentation to look up unfamiliar syntax. To achieve this, it is necessary to draw upon our current understanding of gaze-behavior across various and related fields, from vision and cognition to visualization. Call for Papers: 1st International Workshop on Disinformation and Toxic Content Analysis (DiTox 2023), September 13th, 2023 https://ditox.ait.ac.at/ In conjunction with the 4th biennial conference on Language, Data and Knowledge (LDK 2023) to be held in Vienna, Austria. The spread of misinformation and disinformation not only affects people's perceptions and beliefs, but can also have a direct impact on democratic institutions, critical infrastructure, and lives and families. Most critically, it raises the more fundamental issue of what sources of information can be trusted at all, potentially calling into question our relationship of trust with traditional media. Because of these profoundly harmful effects, disinformation is seen as one of the most pressing problems of our time. The weak definition of the research task of disinformation analysis and detection, as well as the enormous range in terms of the heterogeneity and multimodality of the data involved, make this an exceptionally challenging field of research. The complexity ranges from media tampering detection to text content analysis to large-scale information fusion to analyze disinformation trends. Maintaining a comprehensive overview is equally difficult. Respectively, the overall goal of this workshop is therefore to provide insights on how approaches from different domains can be used to address disinformation at a technical level including AI/ML-based methods, visual analytics, and visualization approaches as well as interdisciplinary approaches inspired by the social sciences (i.e., computational social science). To this end, we invite task-specific contributions, as well as large-scale integration approaches, demo and project presentations, to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of the art in countering disinformation.
