Dear Visualization Community, VIS Summer Camp is an annual event that promotes a peer support and mentoring group that helps to develop junior faculty without tenure whose research area spans visualization. This experience provides a unique mentoring opportunity that complements the available resources to faculty who are starting to navigate the world of academia and aids their transition from graduate school or postdoctoral positions to the following career stages. The camp is designed as a two-year event aimed at taking a small group and developing a sense of camaraderie and belonging to support retention. The second year is focused on more intensive development of crucial milestones toward success, such as developing NSF CRII and CAREER, DOE ECRP, or DOD YIP proposals. We accept a small cohort of participants and organize a retreat with intense discussions and collaborations over two days. We've just started recruiting the next 2-yr cohort. As such, maps continue to play a central role as the basis for a wide variety of interactive tools and applications in our modern digital age as well. This workshop aims to bring together researchers, designers and practitioners interested in maps and map-like visualizations as the underlying physical, theoretical, or metaphorical framework for designing interfaces and interactions. This workshop will create a common ground and a collaborative space for sharing design, research, and practical expertise to aid its participants with creating novel future map-based designs in different fields, including visualization, visual design, interaction design, user interface design, and cartography. This workshop is part of INTERACT 2023, and is supported by the IFIP TC 13 Working Group on Human-Centred Technology for Sustainability (WG 13.10). CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ----------------------- The primary objective of this workshop is to create common ground and a collaborative space for sharing design, research, and practical expertise, practices, learnings, and experiences to help its participants with creating novel future map-based designs in different fields, including visualization, visual design, interaction design, user interface design, and cartography. Prospective workshop participants are invited to submit a short paper describing their interests and work related to the topics of this workshop. Some of the main topics to be covered by this workshop will include, but not limited to, the following: – Research and design foundations of map-based interfaces and interactions. – Theories, principles and practices guiding the design of map-based interfaces and interactions. – Applications of map-based interfaces and interactions, in areas such environment, sustainability, epidemiology, healthcare, education, and entertainment. – User evaluations of map-based interfaces and interactions. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE ----------------------- This one-day workshop will be informal and interactive, combining short presentations of the accepted workshop papers with group discussions, aimed at assisting the authors and other participants with developing their research and design ideas. The workshop will also include a hands-on group activity. As part of this, the workshop participants will work in small groups to perform map-based tasks and create design sketches for an interactive application. The designs will then be shared at the main conference. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will, however, be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary. SUBMISSIONS ----------------------- Workshop paper submissions should be of maximum 10 pages, and prepared according to the Springer LNCS format, using the templates provided for CS Proceedings and other Multiauthor Volumes (https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gu…) Submissions should be made through Easychair https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mapii2023. I am teaching an infovis course this semester (after a very long time!) and looking for ideas on data and projects.. we have done the following topics: 1. What is Data Vis and Why do it? (Munzner, Ch 1) 2. Visual Perception (Ward, Ch. 3) 3. Data/Vis Foundations/Distributions (Ward, Few book chapters) 4. Multivariate Vis (Ward, Ch 8) 5. Time Varying Vis (this week, Few, Ch. 8) We have done a project of building Scatterplot matrix using D3 (and numerous small lab exercises). Looking for roughly a 2 or 2.5 week project at this point. Preferably something thats not easy to cheat on! Thus, designing innovative visualization systems is essential to address and solve various domain problems. For this, a theoretical understanding of visualization models and design principles through visual encoding, interaction, and/or analysis tasks is critical to solving domain problems and understanding data effectively. Identifying possible implications from theories of perception, cognition, design, and/or aesthetics is also important. Automated design guidelines and visualization recommendations should be determined to find scientific limitations of understanding data through visualization. This Special Issue aims to seek high-quality papers that highlight visualization challenges to be accomplished, elucidate solutions for understanding domain problems through visualizations, and theoretical visualization principles for advancing visualization techniques and applications.
