The Department of Computer Science in the College of Arts and Sciences at American University invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow. The appointment is a 12-month position, with the possibility of renewal for one additional year, and will commence on August 1, 2023. Applicants should hold a PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field on or before August 1, 2023. This position is part of a collaboration between the Computer Science department at American University, the Environmental Science department at American University, and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. The successful candidate will become a part of an interdisciplinary team working to visualize global seafood trade data to understand when global seafood trade either improves or threatens food and nutrition security. The project aims at developing novel methods and systems to support the construction and analysis of a global seafood trade network database to advance human-environmental research. The focus of this postdoctoral fellow position at American University will be in analyzing geographic network flow datasets and delivering novel and interpretable representations on the web. Candidates must have a strong programming background. Requirements: * Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related technical field. * Strong background in interactive data visualization and analysis. * Expertise in JavaScript, CSS, and HTML, and other technologies supporting website development. * Experience with server-side web technologies, such as NodeJS and Flask, is preferred * Experience with online databases, especially network database schema (e.g., Neo4J), is preferred * Experienced in designing and implementing empirical user studies. * Experienced with quantitative research methods. * Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a diverse interdisciplinary team. * Demonstrated ability to work with and mentor undergraduate students. * Excellent written and oral communication. * Research experience in spatial data analysis and/or GIS technologies is preferred. The workshop will provide the participants with an opportunity to share their diverse perspectives and research coming from their own contributing fields. CALL FOR PARTICIPATION ================== Potential participants are invited to submit short position papers that address and highlight their specific interests in the main research question of this workshop: How can visual interfaces and interactions be used to exploit the self-explanatory capabilities of AI-based persuasive systems to support their users? In addressing this question, the position papers may relate to a range of topics and areas of interest, including, but not limited to: – role of visual explanations in behavior change mechanisms and models. – explanation-based and/or visual persuasive strategies. – visual user interfaces and virtual agents for persuasive systems. – IxD aspects of interventions and visual feedback mechanisms. – quantitative and qualitative research investigating the effectiveness of AI-based persuasive strategies. – best practices, case studies, and applications of visual interfaces and interactions for persuasive systems. Numbers permitting, the workshop will also be open to other participants without an accepted position paper. WORKSHOP STRUCTURE ================== This one-day workshop is structured to make it fully participatory, practice-oriented and engaging. It comprises two main sessions. The morning session will be used for presentations given by the participants and an invited speaker. The afternoon will be reserved for group work to identify application domains, collect use cases, identify domain-specific as well as domain-agnostic commonalities and requirements, and exchange experiences on what has worked and what has not worked. Based on the analysis we will then compile a set of guidelines and recommendations for the design of visual interfaces and interactions for AI-based persuasive systems. We hope to run the workshop in person at the conference. Provisions will however be made to run the workshop in remote or hybrid mode if necessary. The modern exploration and visualization systems should nowadays offer scalable techniques to efficiently handle billion objects datasets, limiting the visual response in a few milliseconds along with mechanisms for information abstraction, sampling and summarization for addressing problems related to visual information over-plotting. Further, they must encourage user comprehension offering customization capabilities to different user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences according to the analysis needs. Overall, the challenge is to offer self-service visual analytics, i.e. enable data scientists and business analysts to visually gain value and insights out of the data as rapidly as possible, minimizing the role of IT-expert in the loop. The conference will not require a strict page number, as we believe authors have different writing styles and would like to produce scientific material differently. However, the following types of articles are admitted: full articles between 12 and 24 pages (including references) short articles between 6 and 12 pages (including references) extended abstracts between 3 and 6 pages (including references) Full articles should report on original and substantial contributions of lasting value, and the work should concern the theory and/or practice of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (xAI). Moreover, manuscripts showcasing the innovative use of xAI methods, techniques, and approaches and exploring the benefits and challenges of applying xAI-based technology in real-life applications and contexts are welcome. Evaluations of proposed solutions and applications should be commensurate with the claims made in the article. Full articles should reflect more complex innovations or studies and have a more thorough discussion of related work. Research procedures and technical methods should be presented sufficiently to ensure scrutiny and reproducibility. We recognise that user data may be proprietary or confidential, therefore we encourage sharing (anonymized, cleaned) data sets, data collection procedures, and code. Results and findings should be communicated clearly, and implications of the contributions for xAI as a field and beyond should be explicitly discussed. Shorter articles should generally report on advances that can be described, set into context, and evaluated concisely. These articles are not ‘work-in-progress’ reports but complete studies focused on smaller but complete research work, simple to describe. For these articles, the discussion of related work and contextualisation in the wider body of knowledge can be smaller than that of full articles. Extended abstracts are not simply long abstracts. It should contain the definition of a problem and the presentation of a solution, comparisons to related work, and other details expected in a research manuscript but not in an abstract. An extended abstract is a research article whose ideas and significance can be understood in less than an hour. Producing an extended abstract can be more demanding than producing a full or short research article. Some things that can be omitted from an extended abstract, such as future work, details of proofs or implementation that should seem plausible to reviewers, and ramifications not relevant to the key ideas of the abstract. It should also contain enough bibliographic references to follow the main argument of the proposed research. Anonymity for review The submitted article (a .pdf) must be anonymous, given that the conference uses a double-blind<http://xaiworldconference.org/review-process/> review process. Therefore, authors must omit their names and affiliations in the submitted .pdf file and avoid obvious identifying statements. For instance, citations to the author’s prior work should be made in the third person. Failure to anonymize your submission could result in desk rejection. Ethical & Human Subjects Considerations The conference organisers expect authors to discuss the ethical considerations and the impact of the presented work and/or its intended application, where appropriate. Additionally, all authors must comply with ethical standards and regulatory guidelines associated with human subjects research, including using personally identifiable data and research involving human participants. Manuscripts reporting on human subjects research must include a statement identifying any regulatory review the research is subject to (and identifying the form of approval provided) or explaining the lack of required review. Further style instructions We ask the authors to start the reference section on a new page. Appendices count toward the page limit. Supplementary material, if any, should be linked to an external source using an anonymized URL. Review process All articles submitted within the deadlines and according to the guidelines will be subjected to a double-blind review. Papers that are out of scope, incomplete, or lack sufficient evidence to support the basic claims may be rejected without full review. Furthermore, reviewers will be asked to comment on whether the length is appropriate for the contribution. Each of the submitted articles will be reviewed by at least three members of the Scientific Committee. After completion of the review process, the authors will be informed about the acceptance or rejection of the submitted work. The reviewers’ comments will be available to the authors in both cases. In case of acceptance, authors must meet the recommendations for improvement and prepare and submit the definitive version of the work up to the camera-ready paper submission deadline. In case of failure to consider the recommendations made by the reviewers, the organizing committee and the editors reserve the right not to include these works in the conference proceedings. The article’s final version must follow the appropriate style guide and contain the authors’ data (names, institutions and emails) and the ORCID details. Submitted articles will be evaluated according to their originality, technical soundness, significance of findings, contribution to knowledge, and clarity of exposition and organisation. Code of Ethics Inspired by the code of ethics put forward by the Association of Computing Machinery, the programme committee, supervised by the general conference chairs and organisers, have the right to desk-reject manuscripts that perpetuate harmful stereotypes, employ unethical research practices, or uncritically present outcomes or implications that disadvantage minoritized communities. Further, reviewers of the scientific committee will be explicitly asked to consider whether the research was conducted in compliance with professional, ethical standards and applicable regulatory guidelines. Failure to do so could lead to a desk-rejection. The successful Ph.D. candidate should develop and evaluate fundamental visualization and interaction techniques, and visual analytics tools for exploring and analyzing multivariate data from various sources, such as IoT sensors or various performance counters collected for game analytics purposes. The work might also include the development of necessary tools for gathering the data as well as building the necessary infrastructure to serve the designed prototypes and manage potential data streams. The main duties of Ph.D. students are to devote themselves to their research studies which include participating in research projects and third-cycle courses (no less than 80%). Are you passionate about advancing research in data science and data visualization? Do you have experience designing, implementing, and using visualizations? Then this email is for you! We are conducting a study to understand how visualization examples influence the design ideas that designers like you create. We are seeking out participants for an 80-minute study (no more than 2 hours). In the session, you will be required to brainstorm and create interesting data visualizations. The one-time session is entirely remote. This is an opportunity to be an active contributor to current and future research in data science and data visualization. We will collect data on your thought process while brainstorming and creating ideas. Personal demographic data will also be collected. The postdoc fellow will conduct research within the fields of information visualization and visual analytics in close collaboration with ISOVIS members, other research groups of the department, and domain experts within the Linnaeus University Centre for Data Intensive Sciences and Applications (DISA). The work duties include the whole research cycle, i.e., from literature reviews and the identification of research challenges, throughout the implementation of visualization tools and performing user studies, to the reporting of the results in publications. In this context, the postdoc fellow is expected to regularly present intermediate/final research results at international conferences/workshops and publish them in highly-ranked conference proceedings and journals in the areas of information visualization, visual analytics, but possibly also in the areas of the domain experts. Within the DISA environment, large and complex data sets from various domain areas need to be efficiently visualized to transform data into useful information and new knowledge by the development of visualization principles, techniques and visual analytics tools, including provisioning suitable backend infrastructures to serve web-based, interactive visualizations. To the extent of maximal 20% of the working time, the postdoc fellow will be involved in teaching activities at different levels (incl. supervision of Bachelor’s and Master’s thesis projects). Dear Colleagues, The PacificVis 2023 Poster Program (https://pvis2023.github.io/pvis2023/pages/cfps/cfp_posters) welcomes all areas of visualization research, including information visualization, scientific visualization, and visual analytics science and technology. As we would like the authors to demonstrate novel and applicable ideas in all aspects of visualization, posters on work in progress and practical applications are welcome. The16th IEEE Pacific Visualization Symposium will be held from April 18-21, 2023 in Seoul, Korea. An interactive poster session will be held to allow plenty of opportunities for one-on-one dialogue and small group discussion in a casual setting. The two-page summary of the accepted posters will be included in the electronic conference proceedings.
