PEARLS Data Exploration Tool

PEARLS DATA EXPLORATION https://github.com/VijayrajS/PEARLS https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh8wPMyOxVM The PEARLS data visualization provides a conceptual visualization of high-dimensional data clusters, proposed by Mr. Nahil Jain in 2012. The algorithm aims to extract meaningful information from large quantities of data by clustering them using some already existing clustering algorithm, re-clustering the clusters to form 'pearls,' which are then assigned a particular shape and placed in the 3D space centroid of the cluster. The PEARLS system is available for use and testing, and the code is made available for further development. Issues and further work · Dealing with the file system: The system is stateless, with files in the corresponding user's folder, but the user cannot access previously uploaded files. One can add an API call to do the same and necessary additions to the frontend. · Vulnerabilities and security concerns: The toolkit works fine as it is in a local context. But, a web app is for server deployment, and security is the main concern (especially for valuable datasets, etc.). Basic JWT token security needs fixing of flaws in further iterations. · Better testing strategies for the entire toolkit: There are no proper test cases to test the app and the correctness of the backend. Implement a testing strategy (and a CI/CD pipeline-like setup if possible). · Graceful error handling for any corner cases found: Due to the lack of a strategy, some bugs in the system might return some generic errors. Detect such errors with more informative messages. · Better parallel-coordinates plot component: The frontend uses the react-vis<https://uber.github.io/react-vis/> for displaying a parallel coordinates plot for a given cluster. The framework seems to be rendering the plots but without labels. For now, a workaround is there, but a custom component for the same would be favorable. · Issues with the 3D plots: Users can select a pearl by using a dropdown menu. Previously, a hover-to-select pearl is with three.js. However, this was extremely slow. Identifying the bottlenecks and re-introducing this feature would be favorable. ACSAC is monitoring the evolving situation with COVID-19. While we are anticipating holding the physical conference, we are also planning to accommodate remote presenters in case any authors of accepted contributions are unable to travel to the venue. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: ACSAC invites you to submit your work to the conference. As an internationally recognized forum where practitioners, researchers, and developers meet to learn and to exchange practical ideas and experiences in computer and network security, we welcome your contributions. As part of IEEE VIS’s ongoing unification effort <http://ieeevis.org/year/2020/blog/things-are-changing-2021>, starting in 2021 some of the positions on both the VIS Executive Committee (VEC) and VIS Steering Committee (VSC) will be directly elected by the VIS community. These elections give the community a voice in governance, they allow members to grow into positions of authority, and they hopefully will ensure a diverse representation across all of VIS. Eligible members of the VIS community can register to vote in this year's election and nominate candidates for positions on the VEC or VSC. Multiple nominations and self-nominations are permitted. Anyone who has participated in the VIS conference in some capacity in three out of the five most recent years is eligible, and this includes intention to participate in 2021. VizSec brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will take place on October 27, 2021, in conjunction with the 2021 IEEE VIS conference <http://ieeevis.org/>, giving VizSec authors and attendees enhanced access to IEEE VIS. VizSec program will be presented in an online format with virtual presentations. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user-assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, penetration testing, and other related research topics. We are soliciting Technical (Full), Short, and Position Papers. Technical Papers Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. Short Papers Short papers describing initial research results, concise research contributions or incremental work on the above topics, even including practical applications of security visualization, are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact - Lessons learned from operational engagements - Insights gained from the transition process Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Position Papers Position papers focus on topics needing or calling for discussion or reconsideration of forgotten topics relevant for the VizSec community. They should report a clear position on the target topic and should also suggest a proposal or actions regarding the target topic. They should stimulate imaginative and hypothesis-driven research. In particular, we encourage submissions both from researchers inside the visualization community and outside, such as researchers and practitioners from pure cybersecurity domains who currently do not broadly employ visualization in their work. Posters Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. In line with the full conference, the presentation of posters will take place online. There will be 1-2 dedicated poster sessions in which poster authors can virtually meet and discuss their work with conference participants. An additional web presence of posters will replace the traditional physical installation of poster boards. More concrete details will follow soon. Awards There will be an award for the best full paper from the accepted program. This award will be given to the paper judged to have the highest overall quality as determined by the program committee. Key elements of the selection process include whether papers include evaluation, repeatable results, and open-source data or software. Authors of the best paper will be invited for submission to Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. There will also be an award for Best Poster. This award will recognize authors’ efforts to clearly present their work to the audience. The award will be determined by anonymous judges and given to recipients at the end of the conference. Submissions The VizSec 2021 Proceedings will be published by IEEE. Submissions must be formatted using the IEEE VGTC conference proceedings template that can be found at: https://tc.computer.org/vgtc/publications/conference/ VizSec full papers are limited to 9 pages of content plus an additional 2 pages of references. Papers may be shorter than this but must make a similar contribution to a longer paper. Reviewers are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. We are also interested in application discussions that focus on the physical, life or social sciences, engineering, or commerce, for example, or related to the process of visual computing in general. We encourage an emphasis on lessons learned from practical experience for application discussions, particularly where visual computing has been employed in a real, working environment. Viewpoint papers are submitted with author names and affiliations. Accepted viewpoint papers will be electronically archived, are fully citable publications and will be presented orally at the conference in (approximately) 12-15 minute presentations. Extended Abstracts / Posters The purpose of this track is to present late-breaking results, work in progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. In particular, it provides young researchers, especially postgraduate students, with valuable opportunities to receive feedback from other researchers, and engage in stimulating discussions. The poster track will be managed by the co-chair team and the International Programme Committee (IPC). We solicit poster submissions in the form of an extended abstract of at most 2 pages (with an additional page allowed for references only). Posters will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage process. Accepted posters, size A1 recommended, will be presented at the poster viewing session of the conference. In addition to directly submitted posters, some submissions to the full, short and viewpoint paper tracks, that are not accepted for publication but are deemed suitable, will be offered an opportunity to be presented as posters. Such submissions will not require an additional review process. Traditionally, the materials in a poster/sketch can be reused later by the original authors for a more extensive publication (i.e., a full paper) with more detailed content and mature results. This should not be considered as self-plagiarism. However, as posters/sketches are citable, researchers are encouraged to acknowledge novel ideas and results presented in posters/sketches. A poster may describe a piece of work in any aspect of visual computing. For posters, we particularly encourage a summary report of collaborative projects, work-in-progress, and application case studies. Accepted abstracts do not appear in the Eurographics digital library. An extended abstract and industrial project abstract are not considered as a paper publication, instead being similar to a SIGGRAPH one‐page sketch or to a conference poster without an associated paper. As such, presenting an extended abstract at this conference has no effect on your ability to publish a fuller version of the same work in another venue.
