Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. GD2021 will be held from September 14 to 17, 2021. A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 13-14, 2021. GD2021 will, like GD2020, be held virtually online, although we hope to arrange supplementary in-person activities for those who are able to travel to Tübingen (depending on numbers and any local restrictions in place at the time.) While this is disappointing, we also acknowledge the benefits of remote participation for those who are unable to travel - both presenters and attendees. PAPERS ------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms * Geometric and topological graph theory * Computational topology of graphs on surfaces * Geometric network design and optimization * Geometric computing Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects ----------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Visualization of graphs and networks in real world applications, including big data * Engineering of network visualization algorithms and systems * Experimental results in graph theory and algorithms * Benchmarks and experimental studies of network visualization systems and user interfaces * Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction * Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs Authors of applied papers will have the opportunity to show a demo of their software/system during the poster session. Short papers ------------ In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. Submission format ----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the appropriate LaTeX style file, either gd-llncs.cls for long papers or gd-llncs-short.cls for short papers; these are derived from the style file used for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. To promote inclusion of figures in the submitted papers, submissions will have a strict number of lines limit. Regular papers must have at most 400 lines, (excluding references and figures) and at most 14 pages (excluding references). Short papers must have at most 225 lines (excluding references and figures) and at most 7 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2021 Posters & Contest ----------------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site https://algo.inf.uni-tuebingen.de/gd2021/index.php?id=contest. PUBLICATION ----------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of revised versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv "replacements") are allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which will be also published in the arXiv repository. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper. Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper will not be included in the proceedings. Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA). The authors of two selected papers in Track 2 will be invited to submit a substantially extended and enhanced version of their work to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). A TVCG papers session at the Graph Drawing conference will also feature regular TVCG papers. AWARDS ------ For each of the two tracks, the Program Committee of GD2021 will give a Best Paper Award. In addition, to recognize the effort of participants to present their work and to prepare their posters in a clear and elegant way, there will be a Best Presentation Award and a Best Poster Award voted on by the GD2021 attendees. During the workshop, we will introduce the latest developments in provenance analysis from the visualization community, and try to address research challenges that are relevant for both communities. It is part of Provenance Week 2021, which is a fully online event. All Provenance Week 2021 participants are welcome to join. There is an option to submit a one-page abstract before the workshop if you would like to propose a topic or research question to be discussed at the workshop. - Abstract Submission deadline: June 8th, 2021 - Author Notification: June 22nd, 2021 The LNCS format is recommended and please select the "ProvViz" track (which will be set up soon) when submitting the abstract in EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pw2021) The workshop lasts half a day (morning of 21 July 2021), and will start with a keynote by Bill Howe (please see the information below). After that, participants will form groups to discuss a particular area or research question based on their shared interest. Finally, each group will report back their discussion results and collaboration plan after the workshop. Keynote from Bill Howe, University of Washington Bio: Bill Howe is Associate Professor in the Information School and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research interests are in data management, machine learning, and visualization, particularly as applied in the physical and social sciences. As Founding Associate Director of the UW eScience Institute, Dr. Howe played a leadership role in the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment program through a $32.8 million grant awarded jointly to UW, NYU, and UC Berkeley, and founded UW’s Data Science for Social Good Program. With support from the MacArthur Foundation, NSF, and Microsoft, Howe directs UW’s participation in the Cascadia Urban Analytics Cooperative. He founded the UW Data Science Masters Degree, serving as its inaugural Program Chair, and created a first MOOC on data science that attracted over 200,000 students. His research has been featured in the Economist and Nature News, and he has authored award-winning papers in conferences across data management, machine learning, and visualization. *Call for Participation:* Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop at IEEE VIS 2021 The Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop is back for a 4th year. In this workshop, we seek to bring together researchers to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Rather than focusing on what visualization can do to support machine learning (as in current Explainable AI research), this workshop seeks contributions on *how machine learning can support visualization*. Such support incorporates human-centric sensemaking processes, user-driven analytical systems, and gaining insight from data. Our intention in this workshop is to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction, how to build intelligent visualization systems, and how to proceed with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques. MLUI 2021 largely plans to continue the momentum in this research area that the previous workshops have initiated. This year, we plan to accept both short and long papers jointly in the same submission block. Full papers have a length of 5-10 pages (not including references), while short papers are 2-4 pages (plus references). Short papers are intended to capture either (1) limited aspects of a larger work that fit our call or (2) late-breaking work not yet mature enough for a full paper submission. The option of submitting a short paper replaces the posters track that we previously offered at MLUI. Submissions will be reviewed by a committee of reviewers that we will organize. This committee will include the workshop committee members. The size of the committee will be determined by the number of submissions, such that each submission is reviewed by at least 2 committee members. Both full and short paper metadata (author information, title, university, etc.) as well as the submissions themselves will be posted to the workshop website in advance of the event. The IEEE VGTC announces a new awards program for the IEEE VGTC Visualization Awards. The IEEE VGTC Awards program recognizes and honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community through their research and/or service. Furthermore, we seek out nominations of individuals that enable us to recognize both the diversity of individuals, as well as diversity of contributions, from the community at large. The awards program will now have five awards plus induction to the IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy: VGTC Visualization Dissertation Award The Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes outstanding academic research and development in the field. VGTC Visualization Significant New Researcher Award The VGTC Significant New Researcher Award recognizes an individual who has made significant recent research contributions in the field. VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award The Technical Achievement Award is given each year to recognize an individual for a seminal technical achievement in the field. VGTC Visualization Lifetime Achievement Award The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual to honor that person’s lifetime contribution to the field. VGTC Visualization Service Award The IEEE VGTC Service Award recognizes extraordinary service to the community through the IEEE VGTC and/or the IEEE VGTC Sponsored Conferences and Symposia. VGTC Visualization Academy Selection The IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy is a prestigious academy that highlights the accomplishments of the leaders in the field. -------------------------------- PhD Position in Visualization of Health Information at Graz University of Technology for 3 Years -------------------------------- We are looking for a motivated researcher on the PhD student level to join the Institute of Computer Graphics and Knowledge Visualization at Graz University of Technology, Austria, in the area of Information Visualization. The position is within the new Austrian Science Fund (FWF) research group Human-Centered Interactive Adaptive Visual Approaches in High-Quality Health Information. In collaboration with researchers in Medicine and Psychology, we will research new approaches for visualization of consumer health information, which can adapt to user profiles and information need. The position is available for initially three years and with the possibility to develop a PhD thesis in Computer Science at Graz University of Technology. Research Context ---------------- Consumer health information systems (CHIS) are indispensable in the modern healthcare system and fulfill many functions. Current CHIS, however, are often static and do not adjust to individual information needs, preferences and abilities of consumers. In this project we will research foundations, applications and evaluation of a new class of adaptive, interactive visual health information systems, called A+CHIS. The novelty of our project lies in introducing multi-dimensional adaptivity to the information presentation to users, aiming at a better personal understanding of the meaning of the provided medical content in visual form. The new A+CHIS will adapt the kind of information, its level of detail, and the form of visual presentation to the individual user context. Applicant Profile ----------------- A master degree in computer science, information systems, information science, telematics, mathematics, or related studies is required. One or more of the following skills are desired: Knowledge in computer graphics, information visualization, information retrieval, data bases, interactive systems, or data analysis. Practical skills in a current programming language (e.g., Java, C#, Python, Web-based development) are required. Interest to work in a collaborative research environment with project partners in Medicine and Psychology is expected. Position Details and Working Environment ---------------------------------------- The position is available for initially three years, starting in June 2021 or later. The opportunity to develop a Ph.D. thesis with the Doctoral School of Computer Science at Graz University of Technology is provided.
