Call For Participation: Workshop on Provenance and Visualization (ProvViz) 21 July 2021 (Part of the Provenance Week 2021 - fully online) https://iitdbgroup.github.io/ProvenanceWeek2021/provviz.html The aim of this workshop is to encourage exchange between the provenance and visualization communities. During the workshop, we will introduce the latest developments in provenance analysis from the visualization community, and try to address research challenges that are relevant for both communities. It is part of Provenance Week 2021, which is a fully online event. All Provenance Week 2021 participants are welcome to join. There is an option to submit a one-page abstract before the workshop if you would like to propose a topic or research question to be discussed at the workshop. - Abstract Submission deadline: June 8th, 2021 - Author Notification: June 22nd, 2021 The LNCS format is recommended and please select the "ProvViz" track (which will be set up soon) when submitting the abstract in EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pw2021) The workshop lasts half a day (morning of 21 July 2021), and will start with a keynote by Bill Howe (please see the information below). After that, participants will form groups to discuss a particular area or research question based on their shared interest. Finally, each group will report back their discussion results and collaboration plan after the workshop. Keynote from Bill Howe, University of Washington Bio: Bill Howe is Associate Professor in the Information School and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research interests are in data management, machine learning, and visualization, particularly as applied in the physical and social sciences. As Founding Associate Director of the UW eScience Institute, Dr. Howe played a leadership role in the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment program through a $32.8 million grant awarded jointly to UW, NYU, and UC Berkeley, and founded UW’s Data Science for Social Good Program. With support from the MacArthur Foundation, NSF, and Microsoft, Howe directs UW’s participation in the Cascadia Urban Analytics Cooperative. He founded the UW Data Science Masters Degree, serving as its inaugural Program Chair, and created a first MOOC on data science that attracted over 200,000 students. His research has been featured in the Economist and Nature News, and he has authored award-winning papers in conferences across data management, machine learning, and visualization. Interactive Visual Analytics and Visualization for Decision Making supports human decision making through interaction with data and statistical and machine learning processes, with applications in a broad range of situations where human expertise must be brought to bear on problems characterized by massive datasets and data that are uncertain in fact, relevance, location in space and position in time. Current applications include environmental science and technologies, natural resources and energy, health and related life sciences, precision medicine, safety and security and business processes. Submissions are encouraged that extend the areas of use to new analytic tasks in science and technology, public health, business intelligence, financial analysis, social sciences, and other domains. Particular emphasis will be given to submissions that use visual analytics for social change discovery, analysis and communication. Submissions may include studies of visual analytics and decision support in the context of an organization (e.g., communication between analysts and policy-makers), perceptual and cognitive aspects of the analytic task, Interactive Machine Learning, and collaborative analysis using visual information systems. We encourage authors to address these themes from their own research perspectives. Authors are encouraged to bring the lens of their own background and expertise to focus on the analytics of the data itself and coordination of multiple levels of analysis, decision-making and operations to the design and evaluation of effective presentations for stakeholders. Call for Nominations: IEEE VGTC Visualization Awards The IEEE VGTC announces a new awards program for the IEEE VGTC Visualization Awards. The IEEE VGTC Awards program recognizes and honors individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community through their research and/or service. Furthermore, we seek out nominations of individuals that enable us to recognize both the diversity of individuals, as well as diversity of contributions, from the community at large. The awards program will now have five awards plus induction to the IEEE VGTC Visualization Academy: VGTC Visualization Dissertation Award - The Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes outstanding academic research and development in the field. VGTC Visualization Significant New Researcher Award - The VGTC Significant New Researcher Award recognizes an individual who has made significant recent research contributions in the field. VGTC Visualization Technical Achievement Award - The Technical Achievement Award is given each year to recognize an individual for a seminal technical achievement in the field. VGTC Visualization Lifetime Achievement Award - The Lifetime Achievement Award is given to an individual to honor that person’s lifetime contribution to the field. This will be a full-day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2021. This year, you can contribute to VIS4DH 2021 in two ways - you can submit to the Paper track (see below), or you can submit to the Provocations track, which will be published by end of May. Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the humanities, social sciences and all branches of visualization. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and to intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. We are particularly interested in papers and provocations that bring different disciplines together. More information is available on http://vis4dh.dbvis.de/. _______________________________________________ # CfP - Paper Track This year, VIS4DH will revolve around the topic of “scale”. Visualization is often celebrated as a method to facilitate the exploration and interpretation of “big data”. But is scale a relevant yardstick to measure and characterize the challenges connected to humanities research questions? Scholars have warned about the development and focus on large-scale digital infrastructures within the humanities, suggesting that smaller datasets and lighter infrastructures could better support the needs of humanist researchers. Additionally, critical voices have pointed out the risk of reproducing assumptions about dominant cultures and groups while further marginalizing those who are less likely to be remembered. ‘Data humanism’ has been proposed to highlight the creative potential of “small data” in terms of personal impact. Choices of scale—in terms of data, tools, or teams—influence not only project outcomes but also research methods and processes. This year, we invite work around (but not limited to) the following questions: - Large scale approaches have been said to easily ignore context, to fetishize size and inflate their technical and scientific capabilities, which they rarely deliver. How can we mitigate these issues and effects of scale for existing large scale data infrastructures? - What other motivating factors should be taken into account regardless of scale? Are “volume, velocity and variety” our defining challenges, or should we deliberately shift the problem characterization in humanities projects towards data scarcity, sparsity, polysemy, uncertainty, historicity, quality, and contextuality? - What goes unseen when we look at massive datasets and large trends? How can information visualization techniques assist in bridging small and large scale findings? - How can we envision small data, small processes, small impact for visualization in the humanities? - What trade-offs in visibility (and in-visibility) are made when we consider different scales in projects at the intersection of visualization and the humanities research? - How can research at the intersection of visualization and the humanities counteract the dangers of data colonialism and of excluding marginalized positions? We invite papers at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities that provide both theoretical and applied perspectives around these and other questions. For our paper track we are seeking works from scholars in visualization, the humanities, social science, and the arts who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. # Submission format Submissions will take the form of short (4-6 page - excluding references) papers. Submissions are meant to describe and critically discuss works at the intersection of visualization and humanities research, including applied case studies and empirical results and/or theoretical perspectives. We welcome works that highlight the difficulties (and proposed solutions) of designing visualizations in the context of humanities research and/or applying concepts from humanities research to foster visualization research and design. Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their paper at the workshop as a pre-recorded video plus online discussion. All presentations will be followed by a lively discussion with workshop participants. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. GD2021 will be held from September 14 to 17, 2021. A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 13-14, 2021. GD2021 will, like GD2020, be held virtually online, although we hope to arrange supplementary in-person activities for those who are able to travel to Tübingen (depending on numbers and any local restrictions in place at the time.) While this is disappointing, we also acknowledge the benefits of remote participation for those who are unable to travel - both presenters and attendees. PAPERS ------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms * Geometric and topological graph theory * Computational topology of graphs on surfaces * Geometric network design and optimization * Geometric computing Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects ----------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. Short papers ------------ In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. Submission format ----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the appropriate LaTeX style file, either gd-llncs.cls for long papers or gd-llncs-short.cls for short papers; these are derived from the style file used for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. To promote inclusion of figures in the submitted papers, submissions will have a strict number of lines limit. Regular papers must have at most 400 lines, (excluding references and figures) and at most 14 pages (excluding references). Short papers must have at most 225 lines (excluding references and figures) and at most 7 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. All submissions will be handled through EasyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2021 Posters & Contest ----------------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site https://algo.inf.uni-tuebingen.de/gd2021/index.php?id=contest. PUBLICATION ----------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings version (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of revised versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv "replacements") are allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which will be also published in the arXiv repository. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper. Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (barring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper will not be included in the proceedings. The goal of the Diagrams 2021 Graduate Symposium is twofold. Firstly, the Symposium will provide senior graduate students and recent Masters and Doctoral graduates with the opportunity to present their research. Established researchers will provide feedback and comments on each of the presentations. Secondly, the Symposium will provide students with an opportunity to network with each other as future colleagues. In previous Diagrams Graduate Symposiums, lively and useful discussions have enabled students to receive suggestions about their on-going research and allowed more experienced participants to hear some fresh ideas and view some of the new trends in the field. The Graduate Symposium will include an Inspirational Early Career Researcher Invited Talk<http://www.diagrams-conference.org/2021/index.php/keynotes/>. The invitation to deliver this talk is reserved for an active Diagrams researcher, within approximately ten years of their PhD, who has demonstrable potential to be a major leadership force within the community. The Inspirational ECR talk will be open to the entire Diagrams delegation. ***************************************************************** Submission Requirements Submissions that focus on any aspect of diagrams research are welcome. Students who wish to present their work at the symposium must submit a 3-page report describing – their thesis topic, – the approach being taken, – the work that has been completed, – the expected contributions of the research – any necessary acknowledgements (for example, supervision team and source funding). The student should be the sole author of their submission and the supervisor names should be included in the acknowledgements section. The report must be submitted in Springer LNCS format. Authors of accepted submissions will be expected to be in attendance at the virtual conference to present their research and respond to questions presented by delegates. All presenters must accept that it is not within the power of the organisers to prevent delegates from recording talks. However, when registering, delegates will be asked to confirm that they will not record any part of the conference. Call For Participation: Workshop on Provenance and Visualization (ProvViz) 21 July 2021 (Part of the Provenance Week 2021 - fully online) https://iitdbgroup.github.io/ProvenanceWeek2021/provviz.html The aim of this workshop is to encourage exchange between the provenance and visualization communities. During the workshop, we will introduce the latest developments in provenance analysis from the visualization community, and try to address research challenges that are relevant for both communities. It is part of Provenance Week 2021, which is a fully online event. All Provenance Week 2021 participants are welcome to join. There is an option to submit a one-page abstract before the workshop if you would like to propose a topic or research question to be discussed at the workshop. - Abstract Submission deadline: June 8th, 2021 - Author Notification: June 22nd, 2021 The LNCS format is recommended and please select the "ProvViz" track (which will be set up soon) when submitting the abstract in EasyChair (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pw2021) The workshop lasts half a day (morning of 21 July 2021), and will start with a keynote by Bill Howe (please see the information below). After that, participants will form groups to discuss a particular area or research question based on their shared interest. Finally, each group will report back their discussion results and collaboration plan after the workshop. Keynote from Bill Howe, University of Washington Bio: Bill Howe is Associate Professor in the Information School and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and the Department of Electrical Engineering. His research interests are in data management, machine learning, and visualization, particularly as applied in the physical and social sciences. As Founding Associate Director of the UW eScience Institute, Dr. Howe played a leadership role in the Moore-Sloan Data Science Environment program through a $32.8 million grant awarded jointly to UW, NYU, and UC Berkeley, and founded UW’s Data Science for Social Good Program. With support from the MacArthur Foundation, NSF, and Microsoft, Howe directs UW’s participation in the Cascadia Urban Analytics Cooperative. He founded the UW Data Science Masters Degree, serving as its inaugural Program Chair, and created a first MOOC on data science that attracted over 200,000 students. His research has been featured in the Economist and Nature News, and he has authored award-winning papers in conferences across data management, machine learning, and visualization.
