The ever-increasing global awareness, practice, and teaching of information and data visualization includes a growing audience of consumers and creators. Building on the success of two prior IEEE VIS workshops in 2016 and 2018, this workshop focuses on how to implement an actionable framework around guidelines for the wider visualization and non-visualization community. Submit your ongoing work and innovative ideas as short papers up to 4 pages and be part of a vibrant half-day workshop that will bring together an exciting program with papers and discussions. In other words, the workshop wants to deliver concrete ideas and meta(!)- guidelines about how the community can contribute to the collection, storage, formulation, and dissemination of guidelines—within and beyond the visualization community. Our goals for this workshop are: Discuss work-in-progress and current activities around visualization guidelines: new guidelines, management systems, teaching activities, studies, etc. Collect a comprehensive list of common and less common guidelines, including references, examples, counter-examples, etc. Based on this collection exercise, create and discuss a possible framework, or template, or methodology to capture guidelines. With this proposal, we provide an initial template, the ‘Guideline Report’ (see online). As empirical and design knowledge about data visualization grows, and as data visualization is becoming a more widespread activity and application, we need a framework and technological platform where we can propose, discuss, and study guidelines as scientific activities and where we can balance the formative nature of guidelines and their exceptions. Create and discuss activities to engage students, workshop participants, practitioners, designers, data analyst experts, and other visualization stakeholders to express and reflect on their guidelines. Discuss a research agenda on how to address open questions around guidelines and how on-going research—in any field of visualization—can contribute to sustainable management and discussion of guidelines. **Submission Info** Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished short papers up to 4 pages (excluding references) that present innovative ideas, discourses, design concepts, empirical studies, theoretical frameworks, social models, and work-in-progress in the context of principles and guidelines in visualization. An independent community of visualization practitioners has sprung up, producing and deconstructing visualizations of broad interest. Free visualization tools are widely available and used. The VisComm workshop brings together practitioners and researchers from a broad range of disciplines to address questions raised by visualization’s new communicative role. We encourage participation from journalists, designers, and others that do not typically attend the IEEE Visualization conference. Participation VisComm seeks short research papers, short position papers, and posters. In addition, Viscomm accepts visual case studies, which allow visualization practitioners to present their visualizations, and discuss how they were designed and received by their audience. Lecturer position in data visualization at Rice University

Rice University (in Houston, TX) is hiring a lecturer to teach 4-5 sections of an undergraduate "intro to data visualization" course that is part of Rice's new interdisciplinary minor in data science. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible lectureship that comes with a one-year contract that will be extended to regular three-year contracts in subsequent years, depending on teaching performance. This is a stable, fully funded position in a growing program. The position itself will be housed in the Program in Writing and Communication, which is a campus-wide program serving undergraduate and graduate students as well as faculty. This will be a full-day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2020. This year, you can contribute to VIS4DH 2020 in two ways - you can submit to the Paper track (just like in previous years), or you can submit to the Provocations track (new this year). Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the humanities/social sciences and all branches of visualization. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and to intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. We are particularly interested in papers and provocations that bring different disciplines together. There are varying perspectives on the meaning and use of data that impact how we engage and debate it. “Data” seems core to visualization! Or is it? We are especially interested in a number of open questions in this space, including but not limited to the following: • What counts as data in humanities visualizations? How are marginalized forms of data mobilized? • What makes data data (or not data)? Is data always digital? • What methods can be explored for constructing, collecting, and/or analyzing data at the intersection of visualization and the (digital) humanities? How does data and its representations affect our interpretations? • What gets lost and/or constructed when transforming data? How can we make constructions/transformations visible? • How do we visually measure and convey differences in data? • How can we maintain a focus on the particular while enabling higher-level views? • What is the role of (interactive) visualization in transdisciplinary data- and humanities-driven exchange? • How do we make sure that interactions with data and its representations are faithful? • How can we re-imagine an engagement with data through visualization that takes an inclusive, embracing transdisciplinary perspective? We invite papers at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities that provide both theoretical and applied perspectives around these and other questions. For our paper track we are seeking works from scholars in visualization, the humanities, social science, and the arts who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. # Submitting a paper Submissions will take the form of short (4-6 page - excluding references) papers. Submissions are meant to describe and critically discuss works at the intersection of visualization and humanities research, including applied case studies and empirical results and/or theoretical perspectives. We welcome works that highlight the difficulties (and proposed solutions) of designing visualizations in the context of humanities research and/or applying concepts from humanities research to foster visualization research and design. It highlights the valuable role of visualization to inform the public, help hospital managers plan, and guide government policy-makers. It is with great regret that the organising committee of DIAGRAMS 2020 announce that the conference, planned for 24-28th August, will not take place face-to-face in Tallinn, Estonia.
