Description We seek applicants with a strong record of interdisciplinary work in developing and applying concepts and methods from science, technology, computing, engineering and applied mathematics in the service of urban communities across the globe. Successful applicants are expected to contribute to both methods and foundational knowledge in their core disciplines, as well as to novel data- and technology-driven applications for, e.g., improving the quality of city services; optimizing resource allocation and decision-making by local governments; securing smart urban infrastructure; addressing challenging urban problems including crime, environmental pollution and public health issues; and empowering urban citizens to better their communities and improve their quality of life. We encourage applications in a wide range of areas of specialization, including but not limited to: - Urban machine learning, data science, and AI - Data management, curation, integration, visualization, and analytics - Smart mobility and emerging transportation safety solutions - Cyber-security and privacy in smart cities and critical infrastructure - Urban Internet of Things - Improving city operations and governance through data and technology - Smart and connected health - Assistive devices for navigating urban environments as well as the intersection between these and other relevant areas of research in the smart cities and urban science domains. Successful applicants will be expected to both start new projects and collaborations, as well as engage in existing projects with sponsoring faculty. Smart Cities Postdoctoral Associates are full-time, non-tenured positions for two years, with annual appointments renewed based on satisfactory performance. The positions will be based at CUSP’s state of the art facility in Brooklyn. The starting salary is $75k/year with competitive benefits, plus funds for travel and professional development. The tentative start date is September 1, 2020. *Responsibilities:* Conduct groundbreaking research both independently and as part of interdisciplinary teams; contribute to existing projects under the supervision of sponsoring faculty, and start new projects and research collaborations as appropriate; participate in the development of funded research proposals; build bridges between CUSP and other Tandon/NYU labs, groups, and centers; publish in top venues in smart cities, urban science, and/or their fields of specialization; contribute to scholarly life at CUSP through the organization of seminars, mentoring of students and other service; and teach (or co-teach) one course per academic year. Qualifications Doctoral degree in a relevant field, and an active agenda of research and publication with a strong focus on smart cities, urban science, or other areas with potential for direct application to cities. A record of transitioning research into practice, particularly as applied to critical urban challenges, is desirable. Conference on Extending Database Technology & 23rd Intl. Conference on Database Theory (EDBT/ICDT 2020) Information Visualization is nowadays one of the cornerstones of Data Science, turning the abundance of Big Data being produced through modern systems into actionable knowledge. Indeed, the Big Data era has realized the availability of voluminous datasets that are dynamic, noisy and heterogeneous in nature. Transforming a data-curious user into someone who can access and analyze that data is even more burdensome now for a great number of users with little or no support and expertise on the data processing part. Thus, the area of data visualization, visual exploration and analysis has gained great attention recently, calling for joint action from different research areas from the HCI, Computer graphics and Data management and mining communities. In this respect, several traditional problems from these communities such as efficient data storage, querying & indexing for enabling visual analytics, new ways for visual presentation of massive data, efficient interaction and personalization techniques that can fit to different user needs are revisited. The modern exploration and visualization systems should nowadays offer scalable techniques to efficiently handle billion objects datasets, limiting the visual response in a few milliseconds along with mechanisms for information abstraction, sampling and summarization for addressing problems related to visual information over-plotting. Further, they must encourage user comprehension offering customization capabilities to different user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences according to the analysis needs. Overall, the challenge is to offer self-service visual analytics, i.e. enable data scientists and business analysts to visually gain value and insights out of the d! ata as repidly as possible, minimizing the role of IT-expert in the loop. The BigVis workshop aims at addressing the above challenges and issues by providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss, exchange, and disseminate their work. Come visualize planetary science and robotics data with the NASA JPL / Caltech / Art Center visualization internship, a multi-disciplinary program for computer scientists, designers and artists. Students will develop creative interactive visualization tools for scientific research/engineering groups selected from a broad set of areas at JPL and Caltech. Working in multidisciplinary teams, students will use methods from User-Centered Design, computing, 3D graphics and interaction design to visualize real data sets that support active scientific research. They will receive mentorship in visualization, computing and design from program co-organizers Hillary Mushkin (Caltech), Scott Davidoff (JPL) and Maggie Hendrie (Art Center) as well as Santiago Lombeyda (Caltech). Students will work closely with scientific or engineering researchers to understand their research and data, identify their visualization needs and determine the relevance of design iterations to their research and data. The Cluster of Excellence EXC 2120 on "Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture" (IntCDC) at the University of Stuttgart invites applications for the position of a *** Independent Junior Research Group Leader in Computer Science for the Cluster of Excellence IntCDC (f/m/d) *** EXC 2120 was newly established in 2019, with an initial funding period of seven years. A Cluster of Excellence is the most significant and substantial grant funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). For the first time, a Cluster of Excellence has been awarded to the field of architecture, bringing together a world-leading interdisciplinary team of researchers from seven faculties of the University of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. To complement our research activities, we are seeking a highly motivated young scientist with an outstanding early-career track record and substantial international research experience in fields related to the aims of the cluster. A successful candidate should have a PhD degree in computer science or a similar area, and profound experience in one or more of the following or related topics: * Human-computer interaction or human-robot interaction, in particular, for digital fabrication * Augmented reality and mixed reality, especially, in the context of engineering domains * Visualization and visual analytics, machine learning for visual data science * Computer vision or robot perception * Computational approaches for architecture and the building industry A successful candidate will combine above computer science research with the application-oriented research on methods that support digitization in architecture and the building industry. Presenting a poster is a great way to get feedback on work that has not yet been published. In this workshop, we aim to identify a road-map towards productive user interfaces for immersive analytics. In particular we aim to understand how we can effectively support specific visualisation and analytics tasks in VR/AR, and identify the interactions needed to support these. Our goal is to catalyse the research community and lead toward a reference paper to inform future research. The Center for Data Science (CDS) at New York University (NYU) invites applications for its highly prestigious CDS Moore-Sloan Faculty Fellow <https://cds.nyu.edu/our-people/research-engineers-fellows-and-postdocs/> positions. Building on the success of the Moore-Sloan Fellows program, CDS has created a Faculty Fellow program to continue to develop outstanding researchers in Data Science. Alumni of the distinguished Moore-Sloan Fellowship program have secured top-level academic positions or industry jobs. CDS currently has up to 5 Faculty Fellowship positions available. Given the prestigious nature of the position, we offer a generous compensation package, funds to support research and travel, and will aim to offer access to NYU faculty housing. Review of applications will start in December 2019, and the extension of fellowship offers will begin in February 2020. Description: CDS is the focal point for NYU’s university-wide initiative in data science and statistics, established 6 years ago, and one of the country’s leading data science research and training facilities. CDS is a vibrant space with 16 jointly appointed faculty (growing to over 20 in the next two years) and 11 associated faculty across computer science, mathematics, engineering, neuroscience, linguistics, politics, psychology, physics, biology and business; a list of affiliate faculty spanning a wide range of NYU’s schools and departments, a highly successful Master’s program and one of the first Data Science PhD programs as well as the new undergraduate program in data science. CDS’ research focuses on tools and methods at the intersection between applied mathematics, data science, high-dimensional statistics, machine learning, optimization, and several data-driven application areas. The CDS & Moore Sloan Faculty Fellow will be expected to work at the boundaries between the data-science methods and domain sciences. They are also encouraged to develop collaborations with faculty at CDS and NYU. They will lead independent, original research programs with impact in one or more scientific domains and in one or more methodological domains (computer science, statistics, and applied mathematics). We seek outstanding interdisciplinary researchers with expertise in the methods of data science possibly with application in physical, life, or social science. The program recognizes that rapid advances in our ability to acquire and generate data are transforming all fields of discovery from data-poor to data-rich. A significant bottleneck to discovery is our ability to perform inference over heterogeneous, noisy, and often massive datasets. Successful candidates will bring a research agenda that can take advantage of the unique intellectual opportunities afforded by NYU, and will have experience in working with researchers across different fields. This is a full-time non-tenure position, with a light teaching load of one (1) CDS course per year as the primary instructor. You will also be expected to participate in service activities of the Center for Data Science (such as helping review admissions applications, committee work, etc.). Appointments will be for two years, with potential for a 1-year re-appointment pending satisfactory review and funding. Fellows will be offered competitive salary and benefits, with funds to support research and travel. A start date of September 1, 2020 is the date envisaged.
