SI Guest Editors, Cagatay Turkay, Tatiana von Landesberger, Remco Chang, Shixia Liu, Daniel Archambault CALL FOR PAPERS ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems (TiiS) Special Issue on Interactive Visual Analytics for Making Explainable and Accountable Decisions Background Due to recent advances in Artificial Intelligence, complex and advanced machine learning models have been developed and used increasingly in making data-driven decisions that have significant impact on science, business, and the wider society. Although effective, the complexity of these models can often make the results difficult to understand, explain, evaluate, and scrutinize. There is therefore a significant demand from governments, businesses, and the wider society for interpretable, explainable and accountable decision-making models and systems. Interactive visual analytics offer great potential in this space by marrying human intelligence with machine power, through, including but not limited to, visual representations of data and interaction techniques, to aid humans in better generating, interpreting, evaluating, and deploying statistical and machine learning models. In this special issue, we will feature cutting-edge research where interactive visual analytics methods are applied together with complex computational methods for making explainable and accountable decisions informed by data. Scope, Description, and More Information This special issue invites submissions that feature original research on designing, developing and evaluating interactive visual analytics methods that empower their users to make explainable and accountable inferences and decisions based on massive amounts of data. A suitable submission must also demonstrate its relevance to TiiS, the premier journal featuring interactive intelligent systems with two distinct characteristics: intelligence and interactivity. In particular, a suitable submission must exhibit or discuss how the resulting approaches, techniques, or systems advance an interactive intelligent system. Interdisciplinary and applied research is especially encouraged. Conference on Extending Database Technology & 23rd Intl. Conference on Database Theory (EDBT/ICDT 2020) Information Visualization is nowadays one of the cornerstones of Data Science, turning the abundance of Big Data being produced through modern systems into actionable knowledge. Indeed, the Big Data era has realized the availability of voluminous datasets that are dynamic, noisy and heterogeneous in nature. Transforming a data-curious user into someone who can access and analyze that data is even more burdensome now for a great number of users with little or no support and expertise on the data processing part. Thus, the area of data visualization, visual exploration and analysis has gained great attention recently, calling for joint action from different research areas from the HCI, Computer graphics and Data management and mining communities. In this respect, several traditional problems from these communities such as efficient data storage, querying & indexing for enabling visual analytics, new ways for visual presentation of massive data, efficient interaction and personalization techniques that can fit to different user needs are revisited. The modern exploration and visualization systems should nowadays offer scalable techniques to efficiently handle billion objects datasets, limiting the visual response in a few milliseconds along with mechanisms for information abstraction, sampling and summarization for addressing problems related to visual information overplotting. Further, they must encourage user comprehension offering customization capabilities to different user-defined exploration scenarios and preferences according to the analysis needs. Overall, the challenge is to offer self-service visual analytics, i.e. enable data scientists and business analysts to visually gain value and insights out of the data as rapidly as possible, minimizing the role of IT-expert in the loop. The BigVis workshop aims at addressing the above challenges and issues by providing a forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss, exchange, and disseminate their work. BigVis attempts to attract attention from the research areas of Data Management & Mining, Information Visualization and Human-Computer Interaction and highlight novel works that bridge together these communities. VIS Summer Camp is an annual event that promotes a peer support and mentoring group that helps to develop junior faculty without tenure in Northern America whose research area spans visualization. Post-doctoral fellows, Ph.D. and Masters, Developer, and Intern positions Penn State’s Center for Immersive Experiences is seeking to fill positions at various academic levels. See below for details. Post-doctoral research fellow The Center for Immersive Experiences at The Pennsylvania State University (immersive.psu.edu) in collaboration with other units at Penn State (such as ChoroPhronesis, chorophronesis.psu.edu, and Teaching and Learning with Technology), is hiring two Post-Doctoral Researchers focusing on areas such as immersive analytics, immersive learning, immersive decision-making, or serious games. The postdocs will be working in vibrant multidisciplinary teams that are addressing a range of topics that see transformative changes due to the paradigm shifting nature of immersive technologies. Example topics may include empirically validating immersive technologies across the academic spectrum; designing Immersive technologies for environmental decision making; exploring scientific foundations of immersive technologies. Postdocs can have a range of qualifications and can come from several different backgrounds such as computer science, engineering, GIScience, landscape architecture/architecture, education, or psychology. Any subset of the list below is possible, but a strong focus is placed on technical skills as well as skill related to the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of immersive technologies. The ideal candidate must be adaptable, capable of thriving in a rapidly changing environment, where new approaches and technologies may change quickly. Qualifications include: 3D modeling and visualization skills (modeling for real time rendering a plus); programming skills (in particular C#); experience in the development of software for commercial or open source applications; code management system such as git; application development with game engines such as Unity3D and Unreal Engine; experience in learning assessment; experience in the design of experimental evaluations of (immersive) learning; communication skills for interacting with academics, instructional designers and others across the academic spectrum. The initial appointment is intended for 12 months but excellent options for an annual renewal exist depending on performance.
