CHIIR 2020, 14–18 March, 2020 • Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada CHIIR 2020 is pleased to invite proposals for satellite workshops to be held in conjunction with the main conference. http://sigir.org/chiir2020/call-workshop-proposals.html CHIIR 2020 workshops will provide a platform for presenting novel ideas and emerging areas in Interactive IR, Information Seeking or Interfaces for Information Access in a less formal and potentially more focused way than the conference itself. Workshop topics typically match those identified in the CHIIR 2020 general call for contributions, but proposals related to other areas of Interactive IR are welcome as well. The format of each workshop is to be determined by the organisers and can be either full-day or half-day. We encourage workshops that foster collaboration, discussion, group problem-solving and community building initiatives. Workshops that only revolve around the presentation of papers in a “mini conference” format are discouraged. Researchers and practitioners from IR, Information Science or any related discipline are invited to submit proposals for review. The organisers of approved workshops will be expected to define the workshop’s focus, gather and review submissions, and decide upon the final program content. ### Please redistribute as appropriate EXTENDED DEADLINE: *June 30th 2019* The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (*VGTC <http://vgtc.org/>*) sponsors the annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (*VPG <http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group>*) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the *IEEE VIS <http://ieeevis.org/>* conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between August 15 two years before the award and August 15 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between August 15, 2017 and August 15, 2019 are eligible for the 2019 competition). SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1. AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) <http://www.computer.org/cga>. Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world. CFP: IEEE CG&A Special Issue on "Data Physicalization" We are delighted to announce an upcoming CG&A Special Issue on Data Physicalization https://www.computer.org/digital-library/magazines/cg/call-for-papers-data-… Abstract submissions due: 31 October 2019 Final submissions due: 31 January 2020 Publication date: September/October 2020 IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications plans a September/October 2020 special issue on data physicalization. Data physicalization is an emerging cross-disciplinary research area that examines how physical representations of data – data physicalizations – can support communication, learning, problem solving, and decision-making with data. In contrast to traditional graphical data visualizations, data physicalizations encode data in a material form using 3D geometry and material properties. Recently, a series of successful workshops on data physicalization has occurred in several venues, including a Dagstuhl Seminar, IEEE VIS, ACM CHI, ACM TEI, ACM DIS, and DRS (see http://dataphys.org/wiki/Workshops for details). There are many cross-disciplinary challenges in designing, realizing and studying physicalizations with research questions touching on diverse issues related to representing, interpreting, exploring, manipulating and interrogating datasets. We welcome contributions from a diversity of domains that contribute to the understanding of data physicalizations, including from information visualization, computer science, HCI, art, design, engineering, data communication, psychology, and pedagogy. We require original submissions, i.e. those that have not been previously submitted and/or published (in any form) in other venues. Outstanding contributions that significantly extend existing work previously published in other venues will be considered, provided they contribute at least 50% new original work. Authors of such major added-value extensions will have to cite the original work and clearly identify the new content extending the original contribution. Submission guidelines The length of a peer-reviewed article submitted to IEEE CG&A depends on a number of factors. However, typically articles should not exceed 8,000 words (including main text, title, abstract, bibliography, biographies, captions, keywords, acknowledgements, and table text); about a quarter of its length should be taken up by images, photos, artwork, and tables, and the references should be well chosen, ideally not exceeding twenty (with exceptions to survey articles). In general, a regular article should not exceed 20 pages using the current template for authors: http://ems.computer.org/public/files/template.dotx We also welcome submissions in other formats such as pictorials (similar to those provided by the conference on Designing Interactive Systems – DIS; see a description here https://dis2019.com/pictorials/) Pictorials are research papers in which the visual elements (e.g. design sketches, annotated images, illustrations and diagrams, field notes, collages, photographs and annotated photographs) are the primary means of conveying information with at least, if not more, importance as the accompanying text. Pictorials work best when you need to show work that requires visual elements when reporting on design work or artistic practice. However, pictorials do not show design or artistic work only. It is important that whatever is reported in a pictorial must contribute knowledge rather than just documenting known concepts, methods, and processes. As the format of Pictorials can vary widely, we strongly encourage authors to liaise with the guest editors to discuss the intended layout of the pictorial prior to the final submission. The ACM International Conference on Interactive Surfaces and Spaces (ISS) is a premier venue for presenting research in the design and use of new and emerging surface and space technologies. We invite researchers and practitioners working in those fields to submit workshop and tutorial proposals for ISS 2019 (Daejeon, South Korea). Tutorials provide a broad overview of particular topics in the area of interactive surfaces and spaces from recognized experts in the field, while workshops allow to discuss ideas, challenges and new work between interested researchers and practitioners. We welcome proposals from a large variety of topics and domains. Example topics include but are not limited to: • Architectural concepts and emerging trends • Immersive analytics and data physicalization • Museum and art installation trends • Interaction paradigms around large surfaces (tangibles, pen+touch, etc.) • New and emerging body and space sensing technologies • Overview of social protocols, presence, territoriality, and proxemics • Evaluation methods for surface applications • Multi-touch interaction with mobile devices • Feel, taste, smell and splash user interfaces on surfaces • ... and other exciting topics! CALL FOR PAPERS: ---------------- The 2019 Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC 2019) is the tenth annual workshop that provides an opportunity for participants to discuss state-of-the-art data visualization techniques and review how such techniques can be applied to healthcare data. The primary objective of the annual workshop is to bring together medical experts, leading scientists, and visionaries to discuss visualization techniques that can be applied to healthcare data and discuss the areas of healthcare that need more attention from the visualization and visual data mining communities. The workshop will enable participants to showcase their ongoing work on visual analytics of healthcare-related data through podium, posters, or demo presentations as well as to learn more about emerging techniques, software applications, and datasets. In years past, demos of prototype and/or production visual analytics software have been particularly well received, and paper submitters should also consider submitting a companion demo proposal. During the last nine years the Workshop on Visual Analytics in Healthcare (VAHC) has been organized and hosted annually. The VAHC workshop has been hosted five times at the IEEE VIS conference (2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2017) and four times at the AMIA Annual Symposium (2013, 2014, 2016, and 2018). This year the VAHC 2019 workshop is held in conjunction with the IEEE VIS conference in Vancouver, BC, Canada. TOPICS AND SCOPE: ------------------ We will welcome discussions of the use of visual approaches, interaction design, statistical methods, and machine learning for healthcare data analysis. Participants may address the needs of a variety of users, including clinical researchers, epidemiologists, public health analysts, pharmaco-vigilance experts, physicians, hospital-based quality assurance officers, insurance claim analysts, and patients. Topics of interests include but are not limited to: * Visualization of public health data * Visualization of patient-generated health data * Design principles of dashboards for public health surveillance programs * Visual analysis and exploration of longitudinal clinical data * Visual data mining of electronic medical records (EMRs) * Visualization of drug-drug interactions * Improving hospital and operating room (OR) workflow with visual analytics * Outcome forecasting or prediction * Visual analytics for patient safety * Pandemic forecasting and tracking * Visual analytics in radiology * Visual analytics in the emergency department (ED) * Improving patient understanding and/or physician-patient communication with visual analytics * Visual analytics as a means for knowledge discovery * Human-computer interaction with EHRs PAPER SUBMISSION AND FORMAT GUIDELINES: --------------------------------------- We encourage a diverse range of submissions and demonstrations from academia, healthcare organizations, and industry that address any of the topics listed above. Submissions can be for (1) paper / podium presentations, (2) poster presentations, or (3) live & interactive demonstrations. - Paper: Papers are limited to eight pages. We anticipate that accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Xplore digital library. - Poster: Poster abstract submissions are limited to two pages.. - Demo: Demonstration abstract submissions are limited to two pages. The Doctoral Consortium also aims to provide students with useful guidance on various aspects of their research from established researchers and the other student attendees. Finally, the Doctoral Consortium seeks to motivate students in the development of their scientific curiosity and facilitate their networking within the research community. The topics of the Doctoral Consortium are the same as CHItaly’s. The main goal of the consortium is to enables PhD students to interact with their peers, as well as with more senior researchers, on a wide range of Human-Computer Interaction related topics. The consortium is open to PhD students worldwide at any stage in their research. Students at an initial stage should be able to challenge their ideas and current research directions.
