Launched in September 2014, this interdisciplinary BSc programme achieved an overall satisfaction score of 90% in the 2018 National Student Survey, and ranked first in the Russell Group for “Learning Opportunities” and “Organisation and Management” measures. This position will commence mid-December 2019 and will be available as a full time appointment for a period of 6 months (until mid-June 2020). The role will be held within the University’s interdisciplinary Department of Theatre, Film and Television (TFTV). TFTV, established in 2006, is a highly innovative department that brings together research, teaching and commercial activities in the fields of interactive media, film, television and theatre. In September 2010, we moved into a £30m purpose-designed building with superb facilities for both production activities and academic study. In 2015, the department together with Computer Science started leading the Digital Creativity Labs, a newly funded £18m flagship project of the UK Government’s Digital Economy programme. On 1 May 2019, the department, together with the Digital Creativity Labs, launches XR Stories, an exciting new R&D partnership for the Yorkshire screen industries as part of the Creative Industries Cluster Programme, funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council and part of the Industrial Strategy. == Role == The successful candidate will lead and teach on existing modules covering introductory programming in Processing (Java) and the interactive media development process (e.g. design, user experience, prototyping, evaluation and project management for a variety of applications). You will develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material to create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students as well as carry out on-going curriculum review, and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies. You will also contribute to final year project supervision and marking and undertake a range of administrative responsibilities. == Skills, Experience & Qualification needed == You will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a PhD, but at least a Masters degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Computer Science, HCI or Games Design and Development) and experience teaching at HE level. You must have experience with / knowledge of object-oriented programming, especially in Java, and the software development lifecycle for different kinds of interactive media (e.g. entertainment, mobile, education applications). You will also have the skills to design, manage and deliver their own teaching, carry out assessment duties, engage with a wide-ranging audience, as well as supervise student work and carry out pastoral supervision. The Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop seeks to bring together researchers to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Rather than focusing on what visualization can do to support machine learning (as in current Explainable AI research), this workshop seeks contributions on *how machine learning can support visualization*. Such support incorporates human-centric sensemaking processes, user-driven analytical systems, and gaining insight from data. Our intention in this workshop is to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction, how to build intelligent visualization systems, and how to proceed with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques. Further, we hope to extend last year’s collaborative creation of a research agenda that explores the future of machine learning with user interaction. For our workshop poster session, we invite both late-breaking work and contributions in this area from other research domains to submit extended abstracts between 2 and 4 pages in length (NOT including references). All submissions must be formatted according to the VGTC conference style template <http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html> (i.e., NOT the journal style template that full papers use). We briefly discuss these categories below. Although your main paper type has to be specified during the paper submission process, papers can include elements of more than one of these categories. Please see "Process and Pitfalls in Writing Information Visualization Research Papers" by Tamara Munzner for a more detailed discussion. *Technique papers* introduce novel techniques or algorithms that have not previously appeared in the literature, or that significantly extend known techniques or algorithms, for example, by scaling to datasets of much larger size than before or by generalizing a technique to a larger class of uses. The technique or algorithm description provided in the paper should be complete enough that a competent graduate student in visualization could implement the work, and the authors should create a prototype implementation of the methods. Relevant previous work must be referenced, and the advantage of the new methods over it should be clearly demonstrated. There should be a discussion of the tasks and datasets for which this new method is appropriate, and its limitations. Evaluation through informal or formal user studies, or other methods, will often serve to strengthen the paper, but are not mandatory. *System papers* present a blend of algorithms, technical requirements, user requirements, and design that solves a major problem. The system that is described is both novel and important, and has been implemented. The rationale for significant design decisions is provided, and the system is compared to documented, best-of-breed systems already in use. The comparison includes a specific discussion of how the described system differs from and is, in some significant respects, superior to those systems. For example, the described system may offer substantial advancements in the performance or usability of visualization systems, or novel capabilities. Every effort should be made to eliminate external factors (such as advances in processor performance, memory sizes or operating system features) that would affect this comparison. *Application/design study papers* explore the choices made when applying visualization and visual analytics techniques in an application area, for example relating the visual encodings and interaction techniques to the requirements of the target task. Similarly, application/design study papers have been the norm when researchers describe the use of visualization techniques to glean insights from problems in engineering and science. Although a significant amount of application domain background information can be useful to provide a framing context in which to discuss the specifics of the target task, the primary focus of the case study must be the visualization content. The results of the application/design study, including insights generated in the application domain, should be clearly conveyed. Describing new techniques and algorithms developed to solve the target problem will strengthen a design study paper, but the requirements for novelty are less stringent than in a technique paper. Where necessary, the identification of the underlying parametric space and its efficient search must be aptly described. The work will be judged by the design lessons learned or insights gleaned, on which future contributors can build. We invite submissions on any application area. *Evaluation papers* explore the usage of visualization and visual analytics by human users, and typically present an empirical study of visualization techniques or systems. Authors are not necessarily expected to implement the systems used in these studies themselves; the research contribution will be judged on the validity and importance of the experimental results as opposed to the novelty of the systems or techniques under study. The conference committee appreciates the difficulty and importance of designing and performing rigorous experiments, including the definition of appropriate hypotheses, tasks, data sets, selection of subjects, measurement, validation and conclusions. The goal of such efforts should be to move from mere description of experiments, toward prediction and explanation. We do suggest that potential authors who have not had formal training in the design of experiments involving human subjects may wish to partner with a colleague from an area such as psychology or human-computer interaction who has experience with designing rigorous experimental protocols and statistical analysis of the resulting data. Other novel forms of evaluation are also encouraged. *Theory/model papers* present new interpretations of the foundational theory of visualization and visual analytics. Implementations are usually not relevant for papers in this category. Papers should focus on basic advancement in our understanding of how visualization techniques complement and exploit properties of human vision and cognition. Please visit https://vizsec.org/ for more information. *** The 16th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Vancouver, Canada in conjunction with IEEE VIS, on Wednesday, October 23rd 2019. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Thank you, alex Post-doctoral researchers in immersive technologies The Center for Immersive Experiences at The Pennsylvania State University (immersive.psu.edu) in collaboration with other units at Penn State (such as ChoroPhronesis, sites.psu.edu/chorophronesis, and Teaching and Learning with Technology), is hiring up to three Post-Doctoral Researchers focusing on areas such as immersive analytics, immersive learning, immersive decision-making, or serious games. The postdocs will be working in vibrant multidisciplinary teams that are addressing a range of topics that see transformative changes due to the paradigm shifting nature of immersive technologies. Example topics may include empirically validating immersive technologies across the academic spectrum; designing Immersive technologies for environmental decision making; exploring scientific foundations of immersive technologies. The Postdocs will be coordinated through The Center for Immersive Experiences at Penn State (Director: Dr. Alexander Klippel) but will work across projects at The Pennsylvania State University. Ongoing projects include: The Science of Being There – Immersive Virtual Field Trips for Geospatial Sciences; Visualizing Forest Futures – VIFF; Visualization and Access to Informal Settlements through Immersive Experiences; Transforming Education through Immersive Technologies; Immersive Storytelling for General Education Across the Academic Spectrum; Digital Innovation through Immersive Technologies: Establishing New Paradigms for Environmental Decision Support. Postdocs can have a range of qualifications and can come from several different backgrounds such as computer science, engineering, GIScience, landscape architecture/architecture, education, or psychology. Any subset of the list below is possible, but a strong focus is placed on technical skills as well as skill related to the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of immersive technologies. The ideal candidate must be adaptable, capable of thriving in a rapidly changing environment, where new approaches and technologies may change quickly. Qualifications include: 3D modeling and visualization skills (modeling for real time rendering a plus); programming skills (in particular C#); experience in the development of software for commercial or open source applications; code management system such as git; application development with game engines such as Unity3D and Unreal Engine; experience in learning assessment; experience in the design of experimental evaluations of (immersive) learning; communication skills for interacting with academics, instructional designers and others across the academic spectrum. The initial appointment is intended for 12 months but excellent options for an annual renewal exist depending on performance. Day-to-day, the successful candidate will be expected to rapidly prototype and test new ideas, interfaces and interaction mechanics, as well as create fully realized production quality applications for deployment in academic environments. This job will be filled as a level 2 or level 3, depending upon the successful candidate's competencies, education, and experience. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs. Strong preference will be given to candidates who have experience crafting media assets to support their unity development efforts. In this workshop, we will explore ideas at the frontier of databases, machine learning, and other large-scale data-processing systems impact visualization systems design. It is our core tenant that designing these systems together will yield better systems. Examples include: * How can machine learning influence visualization design? * What data pre-processing can or should be done automatically in a database? * How can perceptual principles be applied to query optimization? This workshop is a forum for cross-pollination between these fields. The program will include invited talks from researches in these communities and preliminary research work. It will include time for short presentations outlining needs and new approaches. Finally, we will break into discussion groups and have a report out on research areas for the next year (Please see http://www.interactive-analysis.org/ for links to the program from previous years, including the notes from last year's discussion groups). -- LIST OF TOPICS -- This workshop will focus on interactive systems: techniques, methods, architecture, systems that enable the user to explore and analyze large amounts of data. The focus will be on issues that span front-end and back-end, with low-latency techniques that enable interaction especially interesting. We encourage research in progress, position papers and late-breaking results in interactive analysis in the broadest sense. We are generally interested in questions that arise at as visualization systems interface with other systems. Topics of interest workshop include (but are not limited to): * Application architectures that exploit these novel back-end capabilities * Techniques for data storage, retrieval, compression, transformation, sampling, and streaming * Database architectures for interactive analysis (designs or implementations) * Novel use of database facilities for interactive analysis * Novel database techniques based on perceptual constraints and human-centered design * Evaluation of data systems for interactive analysis * Identify unique characteristics of databases for supporting visualization * Communication protocols between front and back ends * Techniques for metadata generation We are also interested in position abstracts. In this format, we invite ideas for new research directions, their expected impact and anticipated challenges.
