A postdoc position in graph drawing and related areas is open in the graph drawing research group led by Prof. Giuseppe Di Battista at the Department of Engineering at Roma Tre University. The research group includes Fabrizio Frati, Maurizio Patrignani, and Maurizio Pizzonia as permanent members, together with several postdocs and PhD students. The postdoc position is funded by the PRIN (Research Projects of National Interest) Project "MODE" - Morphing graph drawings efficiently. The ideal candidate for the position should have a PhD in Mathematics or Computer Science and should have a background in algorithms, theoretical computer science and/or discrete mathematics, preferably with an interest in graph drawing, graph theory, and/or combinatorial geometry. The postdoc appointment is to begin as soon as possible. The position is for one year, renewable for a second year. The position is full-time and research-only. The position is open to candidates of any nationality; in particular, no knowledge of Italian is required. The gross salary is 27.5K, which will result in ~1650 net per month. We recently updated the VISLists (http://iilabgt.org/vislists/) and CiteVis (https://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/ii/citevis/) systems that communicate data about IEEE VIS and IEEE InfoVis papers, respectively. The systems now include data from IEEE VIS 2018, except for VISLists missing the '18 VAST conference-only papers which haven't been pushed to the IEEE DL yet. The data driving VISLists is from the vispubdata project (http://www.vispubdata.org) and the data driving CiteVis is hand-curated and available on its website.

CfP Extended Deadline: Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) at VIS 2019

The Machine Learning from User Interactions (MLUI) workshop seeks to bring together researchers to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Rather than focusing on what visualization can do to support machine learning (as in current Explainable AI research), this workshop seeks contributions on *how machine learning can support visualization*. Such support incorporates human-centric sensemaking processes, user-driven analytical systems, and gaining insight from data. Our intention in this workshop is to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction, how to build intelligent visualization systems, and how to proceed with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques. Further, we hope to extend last year’s collaborative creation of a research agenda that explores the future of machine learning with user interaction. We invite research and position papers between 5 and 10 pages in length (NOT including references). All submissions must be formatted according to the VGTC conference template. Papers are to be submitted online through the Precision Conference System at the MLUI track. All papers accepted for presentation at the workshop will be published on IEEE Xplore and linked from the workshop website. These papers are considered archival; reuse of the content in a follow-up publication is only permitted in a proper journal, and any extended version must extend the original paper by at least 30%. The format of each workshop is to be determined by the organisers and can be either full-day or half-day. ### Please redistribute as appropriate EXTENDED DEADLINE: *June 30th 2019* The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (*VGTC <http://vgtc.org/>*) sponsors the annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (*VPG <http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group>*) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the *IEEE VIS <http://ieeevis.org/>* conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between August 15 two years before the award and August 15 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between August 15, 2017 and August 15, 2019 are eligible for the 2019 competition). SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. We invite applications for two exciting roles on this high profile project: 1) Research Associate in Esports Data Visualisation We seek an outstanding data visualization researcher for a fixed-term position as a Research Associate on the Weavr project. As the successful candidate, you will conduct research for collaborative projects and develop interactive visualizations of esports player data. These visualizations will include: i) audience-facing visualizations of player behavior that can be included within live broadcasts and second-screen experiences; ii) visualizations that help commentators and pundits tell more nuanced and engaging stories during live broadcasts and post-game analysis; and iii) visualizations that assist other members of the research team in understanding complex data sources during the development of machine learning and game analytics algorithms. You will also write up research results and disseminate them through publications, seminar and conference presentations; contribute to the identification of possible new areas of research; and undertake appropriate administrative activities. You will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) and record of excellent research in data visualization, reflected in high quality publications. You will also have good programming skills (e.g. C, C++, C#, Python, Java, Unity) and knowledge of frameworks for creating data visualizations, accompanied by a passion to develop working research prototypes of visualizations that can be applied in real-world environments. As the successful candidate, you will conduct research for collaborative projects and oversee the development of authoring tools that allow production teams to create new forms of immersive and data-driven esports narrative content. This will allow customisation of viewers’ experiences, either through their direct interaction (such as by selecting which character to follow in a battle, which depth of explanations to receive from commentators, or which aspects of the game to replay) or automatically (for example by taking into account their proficiencies, using their own game data). You will also write up research results and disseminate them through publications, seminar and conference presentations; contribute to the identification of possible new areas of research; and undertake appropriate administrative activities. You will have a PhD in a programming-related field of Computer Science or Electronic Engineering or related qualifications. You will also have expertise in one of the following two areas: authoring tools in multimedia, games, e-learning, sound/music or related areas; or knowledge representation and reasoning, for example for interactive narratives, personalisation, automated content generation, or related areas. You will have a record of excellent research, reflected in high quality publications, and will bring an appetite for innovation across discipline boundaries and application domains.
