Please visit https://vizsec.org/ for more information. *** The 16th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Vancouver, Canada in conjunction with IEEE VIS, on Wednesday, October 23rd 2019. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. My lab designs and implements data visualization, analysis, and management tools for a wide range of biomedical data types, including but not limited to genomic structural variants, dynamics of the 3D genome, cancer subtypes in patient cohorts, electronic health records, sensor data from mobile devices and wearables, (spatial) single-cell data, and large-scale epigenomics studies. Thank you, alex Post-doctoral researchers in immersive technologies The Center for Immersive Experiences at The Pennsylvania State University (immersive.psu.edu) in collaboration with other units at Penn State (such as ChoroPhronesis, sites.psu.edu/chorophronesis, and Teaching and Learning with Technology), is hiring up to three Post-Doctoral Researchers focusing on areas such as immersive analytics, immersive learning, immersive decision-making, or serious games. The postdocs will be working in vibrant multidisciplinary teams that are addressing a range of topics that see transformative changes due to the paradigm shifting nature of immersive technologies. Example topics may include empirically validating immersive technologies across the academic spectrum; designing Immersive technologies for environmental decision making; exploring scientific foundations of immersive technologies. VisXVision Workshop: Deadline Extended to July 20

*The deadline for the Vis X Vision Workshop on Novel Directions in Vision Science and Visualization Research has been extended to July 20. * Following the last three years of interdisciplinary events at both VIS and VSS, we are holding the first official event for vision scientist and visualization researcher collaboration, interaction, and peer reviewed research-sharing at VIS. The specific goal of this workshop is to provide a forum where vision science and visualization researchers can share cutting-edge research at this interdisciplinary intersection, in preparation for publishing and presenting it at both IEEE VIS, as well as in the upcoming Journal of Vision Special Issue<https://visxvision.com/journal-of-vision/> on Vision and Visualization. The workshop will feature short paper and abstract talks (~10 minutes each) as well as poster presentations with accompanying lightning talks (1 minute each). Finally, we are excited to announce invited talks by Jeremy Wolfe<http://search.bwh.harvard.edu/new/index.html> (Harvard), Timothy Brady<https://bradylab.ucsd.edu/> (UCSD), and Darko Odic<http://cogdev.psych.ubc.ca/> (UBC): Visual Search–Jeremy Wolfe If you want people to find “it”, what should “it” look like? Decades of research on visual search have given us quite a good understanding of how people look for targets in scenes containing distracting items. Knowing how people search is not the same as knowing how to design searchable visual stimuli, especially if we want users to be able to search those stimuli for a variety of different targets. Still, the topics of search and searchability must be related so we will explore what the rules governing the deployment of visual attention might suggest to the creators of new visualizations. Working memory– Timothy Brady How much visual information we can hold in mind at once: The role of visual ensembles & semantic knowledge. When processing complex visual displays, people often need to hold information actively in mind to facilitate comparison or integration. Decades of research have shown that our ability to hold information actively in mind is incredibly limited (e.g., we can miss large changes to scenes if we happen to not be holding in mind the right information), and simple rules like people can remember 3-4 things are popular ways to conceive of these limits. In this talk, I discuss what aspects of visual information people can easily hold in mind; what things are extremely difficult to hold in mind; and how these limits relate to visualization design. Visual magnitudes– Darko Odic How perception perceives number, time, and space. The perception of visual magnitudes – length, area, time, number, etc. – has been one of the foundational questions since the dawn of empirical psychology, stretching back from Weber and Helmholtz to today. In this talk, I will share a number of insights, new and old, about how we perceive number, time, and space representations throughout our entire lifespan, focusing especially on issues that might be relevant for data visualization. I will first discuss findings about how our perceptual system deals with competing magnitude dimensions: situations in which, e.g., both number and length are competing for attention. Next, I will share several findings demonstrating that surface area perception is susceptible to various surprising inconsistencies and illusions, whereby we perceive collections of objects to be cumulatively smaller than they really are. Finally, I will share findings on how perceptual magnitude representations allow us to easily find the maximal and minimal element in a set. ________________________________ Call for Papers Authors may submit either short research papers, short position papers, or abstracts for lightning talks and poster presentations. The paper length should match its contribution to the field and be between 2 to 4 pages (plus 1 page of references). All submissions should be formatted in the VGTC conference paper style. We accept 3 types of submissions—research, position, and abstracts: Short Research Papers These should comprise of empirical studies grounded in theories from perceptual or cognitive science. These might include the use of a novel evaluation technique, or a perception or visual cognition study that has direct implications for visualization research or design. These studies should aim to make progress towards the greater goal of collaboration and academic reciprocity between vision scientists and visualization researchers. Research papers must present new work, meaning that the results must not be published in an existing peer reviewed venue. They should be four page max + 2 page references. Accepted short research papers will be presented as a 10-minute talk. Short Position Papers These are problem discussions or statements describing the author’s relevant experience and ideas in regards to topics such as: applications of perceptual theory towards vision science, novel operationalizations of visual or cognitive phenomena that can be studied in perception experiments, visualization designs that have the potential to pose interesting questions for vision research, the role of vision in visualization, methods pertaining to collaborative efforts from these fields, etc. Position papers are often framed in the context of a brief review of literature, or are written as a review supporting a proposal for future work. They should be four page max + 2 page references. Accepted short position papers will be presented as a 10-minute talk. Abstracts These may cover any of the aforementioned topics, or other related areas. Abstracts should highlight research-in-progress, reviews, or experiments in preparation for journal submission, and must be 300 words or less. Abstract submissions will be considered for both research talks as well as poster presentations. Authors should specify which presentation format they prefer in their submission by writing “talk preferred”, “poster preferred”, or “no preference” under the title. Benefits of submitting a short paper: Short papers can be a useful way for researchers to present early data, meta analyses, preliminary positions, or smaller chunks of a project. For instance, a short paper may contain just set of experiments that clearly demonstrates a specific effect or phenomenon, but may not investigate its underlying mechanisms or explanations. Short papers may be submitted to showcase a follow up or extension of a known method or phenomena in either vision science or visualization research. Short papers’ reviews follow the same scientifically rigorous expectations as journal articles, but give researchers an opportunity to get feedback on more focused aspects of their research. ________________________________ Publication Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Digital Library, including the assignment of DOIs to individual papers. Per IEEE Xplore rules, VisXVision papers will be considered archival and can be referenced. The content of these papers may be sufficiently extended and modified for publication at other venues. Reuse of the content in a follow-up publication for ACM and IEEE venues is allowed provided that the paper is extended by at least 30%. CfP The call is open to all fields of the humanities/social sciences and all branches of visualization. We are particularly interested in papers that bring different disciplines together. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and to intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. In this year’s workshop, we will explore questions of how to build trust when working at the intersection of visualization and humanities-related fields. There are many ways in which trust plays an important role in these collaborations, including questions around general methodologies, approaches to research questions, data collection, extraction and transformation, visual encodings, as well as interpretation and deriving knowledge. The role of visualization in communication has made it key in collaborations spanning many fields related to the humanities, including the arts, history, social sciences, linguistics, literary studies and beyond. The target of this workshop is to explore ways in which trust can be built, strengthened, and maintained when communicating and transferring methodologies, designing tools and encodings, collecting and curating data, and deriving knowledge. Some guiding questions for the 2019 workshop: - How can we deal with different kinds of uncertainty (in data, methodology, research questions, visual encodings, and interpretation)? - How can one make trustworthy visualizations for humanistic research? - What does trust mean for different communities and sub-communities? - How can trust be established in transdisciplinary projects? - How much does trust rely on full understanding of methods, encodings, and other context, especially when collaborating across disciplines? - What do humanities researchers need to see and know to be able to trust visualization, as a tool and process? Submissions This workshop is seeking work from scholars in visualization, the humanities, social science, and the arts who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page - excluding references) papers, falling into one of two submission types: - Short Papers: These submissions are meant to summarize more mature works at the intersection of visualization and humanities research, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and proposed solutions) of designing visualizations in the context of humanities research and/or applying concepts from humanities research to foster visualization research and design. - Position Papers: These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the humanities. In this workshop, we will explore ideas at the frontier of databases, machine learning, and other large-scale data-processing systems impact visualization systems design. It is our core tenant that designing these systems together will yield better systems. Examples include: * How can machine learning influence visualization design? * What data pre-processing can or should be done automatically in a database? * How can perceptual principles be applied to query optimization? This workshop is a forum for cross-pollination between these fields. The program will include invited talks from researches in these communities and preliminary research work. It will include time for short presentations outlining needs and new approaches. The focus will be on issues that span front-end and back-end, with low-latency techniques that enable interaction especially interesting. We encourage research in progress, position papers and late-breaking results in interactive analysis in the broadest sense. We are generally interested in questions that arise at as visualization systems interface with other systems. Topics of interest workshop include (but are not limited to): * Application architectures that exploit these novel back-end capabilities * Techniques for data storage, retrieval, compression, transformation, sampling, and streaming * Database architectures for interactive analysis (designs or implementations) * Novel use of database facilities for interactive analysis * Novel database techniques based on perceptual constraints and human-centered design * Evaluation of data systems for interactive analysis * Identify unique characteristics of databases for supporting visualization * Communication protocols between front and back ends * Techniques for metadata generation We are also interested in position abstracts. In this format, we invite ideas for new research directions, their expected impact and anticipated challenges. IEEE VIS 2019 Workshop on Evaluation of Interactive Visual Machine Learning Systems (EVIVA-ML) Extended deadline for short papers: July 15, 2019 Website: https://eviva-ml.github.io/ --- Recent advances in machine learning saw the rise of powerful automatic methods to build robust predictive models from data. To enhance understanding and improve performance, human-centred approaches have been pursued. In interactive visual machine learning (IVML) systems such as [1,2,3,4,5], a human operator and machine collaborate to achieve a task, mediated by an interactive visual interface. Typically, an IVML system comprises an automated service, a user interface, and a learning component. In IVML, the role of the human operator may be not only to interpret and understand the underlying models or decisions, but to also actively act on, and react to these models. This brings forth first the known problems of intelligibility, trust, and usability issues, but also many open questions with respect to the evaluation of the various facets of the IVML system, both as separate components, and as a holistic entity that includes both human and machine intelligence. Identifying the best evaluation methods to follow for validating machine learning (ML) and interactive visual machine learning (IVML) models remain a challenging topic. The goal of the EVIVA-ML workshop is to bring together visualization researchers and practitioners to discuss experiences and viewpoints on how to effectively evaluate interactive visual machine learning systems. ### Please redistribute as appropriate EXTENDED DEADLINE: *June 30th 2019* The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (*VGTC <http://vgtc.org/>*) sponsors the annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (*VPG <http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group>*) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the *IEEE VIS <http://ieeevis.org/>* conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between August 15 two years before the award and August 15 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between August 15, 2017 and August 15, 2019 are eligible for the 2019 competition). SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1. AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) <http://www.computer.org/cga>. Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world. Thesis Advisor(s) of the winning entrant will chair the following year’s Dissertation Review Committee, with full support from the VPG OC to handle details such as publicity and administration.
