### Please redistribute as appropriate DEADLINE: *June 14th 2019* The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (*VGTC <http://vgtc.org/>*) sponsors the annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (*VPG <http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group>*) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the *IEEE VIS <http://ieeevis.org/>* conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between August 15 two years before the award and August 15 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between August 15, 2017 and August 15, 2019 are eligible for the 2019 competition). SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1. AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) <http://www.computer.org/cga>. Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world. Thesis Advisor(s) of the winning entrant will chair the following year’s Dissertation Review Committee, with full support from the VPG OC to handle details such as publicity and administration. VizSec 2019 Full and Short Papers Deadline Approaching

Please visit https://vizsec.org/ for more information. *** The 16th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cyber security community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Vancouver, Canada in conjunction with IEEE VIS, on Wednesday, October 23rd 2019. This year, VizSec will be more closely integrated with the IEEE VIS program. VizSec will take place during the main week of the conference, giving VizSec authors and attendees enhanced access to IEEE VIS, the premier forum for advances in theory, methods, and applications of visualization and visual analytics. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding. - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response. - Computer forensics. - Machine learning and explainable AI for cybersecurity. - Visual analytics for cybersecurity. - Data protection & privacy. - Blockchain performance & security. - Cybersecurity in critical infrastructure. - Recording and reporting results of investigations. - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment. - Reverse engineering and malware analysis. - Vulnerability management. - Multiple data source analysis. - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense. - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems. - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective). - Modeling system and network behavior. - Modeling attacker and defender behavior. - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks. - Predicting future attacks or targets. - Security metrics. - Software security. - Mobile application security. - Social networking privacy and security. - Training & education. When applicable, visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts and/or allow analysts to collaborate efficiently are particularly desirable. Submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are also considered particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VAST Challenge data sets. Short Papers ------------ Short papers describing initial research results, concise research contributions or incremental work on the above topics, even including practical applications of security visualization, are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs. - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments. - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact. - Lessons learned from operational engagements. - Insights gained from the transition process. Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Posters ------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the attendees, potentially also through live demos, and solicit feedback. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. Awards ------ There will be an award for the best paper from the accepted program. This award will be given to the paper judged to have the highest overall quality as determined by the program committee. Key elements of the selection process include whether papers include evaluation, repeatable results, and open-source data or software. Authors of the best paper will be invited for submission to Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics. Both full and short papers are eligible. There will also be an award for Best Presentation and an award for Best Poster. Each award comes with a $50 USD Amazon gift card thanks to our sponsor, Two Six Labs. These awards will recognize authors’ efforts to clearly and concisely present their work to the audience. The awards will be determined by anonymous judges and given to recipients at the end of the conference. Submissions ----------- The VizSec 2019 Proceedings will be published by IEEE. Submissions must be formatted using the IEEE VGTC conference proceedings template that can be found at: http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Track/vis.html. VizSec full papers are limited to 9 pages of content plus an additional 2 pages of references. Papers may be shorter than this but must make a similar contribution to a longer paper. Reviewers are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Short papers should be at most 4 pages plus 1 page of references. Posters should be 2 page abstracts. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference. IEEE VIS 2019 Workshop on Evaluation of Interactive Visual Machine Learning Systems (EVIVA-ML) Submission deadline: July 1, 2019 Website: https://eviva-ml.github.io/ --- Recent advances in machine learning saw the rise of powerful automatic methods to build robust predictive models from data. To enhance understanding and improve performance, human-centred approaches have been pursued. In interactive visual machine learning (IVML) systems such as [1,2,3,4,5], a human operator and machine collaborate to achieve a task, mediated by an interactive visual interface. Typically, an IVML system comprises an automated service, a user interface, and a learning component. In IVML, the role of the human operator may be not only to interpret and understand the underlying models or decisions, but to also actively act on, and react to these models. This brings forth first the known problems of intelligibility, trust, and usability issues, but also many open questions with respect to the evaluation of the various facets of the IVML system, both as separate components, and as a holistic entity that includes both human and machine intelligence. Identifying the best evaluation methods to follow for validating machine learning (ML) and interactive visual machine learning (IVML) models remain a challenging topic. The goal of the EVIVA-ML workshop is to bring together visualization researchers and practitioners to discuss experiences and viewpoints on how to effectively evaluate interactive visual machine learning systems. Dear All, I am running a study to investigate how infovis practitioners do their design work, specifically looking at the forms of design knowledge they use and in what ways they engage with the academic vis literature. Launched in September 2014, this interdisciplinary BSc programme achieved an overall satisfaction score of 90% in the 2018 National Student Survey, and was ranked first in the Russell Group for “Learning Opportunities” and “Organisation and Management” measures. This position will commence mid-September 2019 and will be available as a full time appointment for a period of 9 months. Department The role will be held within the University’s interdisciplinary Department of Theatre, Film and Television (TFTV). TFTV, established in 2006, is a highly innovative department that brings together research, teaching and commercial activities in the fields of interactive media, film, television and theatre. In September 2010, we moved into a £30m purpose-designed building with superb facilities for both production activities and academic study. In 2015, the department together with Computer Science started leading the Digital Creativity Labs, a newly funded £18m flagship project of the UK Government’s Digital Economy programme. On 1 May 2019, the department, together with the Digital Creativity Labs, launched XR Stories, an exciting new R&D partnership for the Yorkshire screen industries as part of the Creative Industries Cluster Programme, funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council and part of the Industrial Strategy. Role The successful candidate will lead and teach on existing modules covering introductory media asset creation, virtual environment design and development, and design and prototyping with advanced human-computer interaction technologies. You will develop and apply innovative and appropriate teaching techniques and material to create interest, understanding and enthusiasm amongst students as well as carry out on-going curriculum review, and contribute to the development of teaching and learning strategies. You will also contribute to project supervision and marking and undertake a range of administrative responsibilities. Skills, Experience & Qualification needed You will have a postgraduate degree, ideally a PhD but at least a Masters in a relevant subject (e.g. Computer Science, HCI or Games Design and Development) and experience teaching at HE level. You will have knowledge of media asset creation using industry standard tools (ideally including the Adobe Creative Suite and Autodesk Maya); object-oriented programming (ideally in C#); and 3D environment development using games engines (ideally Unity). You must also have the ability to apply this knowledge in the context of teaching prototyping with advanced interaction technologies. Further skills include the ability to design, manage and deliver their own teaching, carry out assessment duties, engage with a wide-ranging audience, as well as supervise student work. Further, you must demonstrate attention to detail and commitment high-quality work, a collaborative ethos, a positive attitude to colleagues and students, willingness to work proactively and ability to plan and prioritise their own work. The Doctoral Consortium also aims to provide students with useful guidance on various aspects of their research from established researchers and the other student attendees. Finally, the Doctoral Consortium seeks to motivate students in the development of their scientific curiosity and facilitate their networking within the research community. The topics of the Doctoral Consortium are the same as CHItaly’s. The main goal of the consortium is to enables PhD students to interact with their peers, as well as with more senior researchers, on a wide range of Human-Computer Interaction related topics. The consortium is open to PhD students worldwide at any stage in their research. Students at an initial stage should be able to challenge their ideas and current research directions. HICSS-53 Call for Papers Track: Software Technology Minitrack: Security and Privacy Aspects of Human-Computer-Interactions Deadline: June 15, 2019 _____________________________________________ Call for Papers *Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences Minitrack on* *Security and Privacy Aspects of Human-Computer-Interactions* http://hicss.hawaii.edu With increasing digitization, the security and privacy aspects of information are a nonnegotiable factor in information system design and operation. Especially the human factor of information systems is a pivotal role in information security and increasingly relevant in establishing user-privacy concepts. More often than not, their knowledge about security aspects and ways of user-manipulation tactics are the last line of defense against cyberattacks. However, studies show users are also seen as the weakest link in information security. Therefore, they are also the primary target of attackers. In addition to the traditional forms of user-computer-interactions in the form of mouse-keyboard-input-devices, new ways of system-interactions, e.g., physiological data from fitness-trackers, eye-tracking devices or even pupillary responses indicating cognitive-load-levels, are increasingly feasible as everyday HCI-components. With the interest in data privacy increasing, are users aware how valuable those personal input data is and how do they value data privacy measures? We have identified two main aspects relevant to researchers within the domain of Software Technology: 1) how to securely deal with input data (also focusing on privacy aspects) 2) how this data can be utilized in order to increase secure behavior or to raise awareness among users (help the users to make better security-related decisions) In this minitrack we seek papers that explore concepts, prototypes, and evaluations of how users interact with information systems and what implications these interactions have for information security and data privacy. Further, we welcome new and innovative ways of human-computer-interaction and security-related concepts currently examined in the field. Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Visual Analytics Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN We invite applications for one or two postdoctoral researcher positions with Summer or Fall start dates in visual analytics, visualization, social media analytics, and big data analytics across a wide spectrum of application areas. The successful candidate will perform duties including: * Research in visual analytics in application domains including social medial analysis, interactive and explainable AI, sustainable food-energy-water systems public safety, crisis management, functional soil mapping, precision agriculture. * Assist in drafting successful research grant proposals. * Lead research activities within the group, including project management and stakeholder engagement. * Assist in supervising graduate and undergraduate students. * Interface with renowned academic research groups at and beyond Purdue University. The candidate should hold a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Information Science, Industrial Engineering, Geography, Statistics, or a related field, with a strong research background and expertise in visual analytics and some of these areas: visualization, geospatial and temporal analysis, statistics, machine learning, cognitive science, human-computer interaction, big data, human factors, computer graphics, food-water-energy systems, sustainable/precision agriculture. Purdue has multiple joint research projects with Peruvian Universities. Therefore, professional proficiency in Spanish is a plus. Both beginning and senior postdoctoral candidates are encouraged to apply. Excellent oral and written communication skills are mandatory. We are the Purdue Visual Analytics Center and are engaged in many cross-disciplinary visual analytics projects. We are also the lead of the VACCINE Center, an Emeritus Visualization Sciences Center of Excellence funded by many U.S. agencies including DHS, NSF, DOE and other government agencies. We have partner institutions across the world. We have many interesting integrated, stakeholder oriented projects working on real data and great challenging projects.
