The Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Challenge is an annual contest with the goal of advancing the field of visual analytics through competition. The VAST Challenge is designed to help researchers understand how their software would be used in a novel analytic tasks and determine if their data transformations, visualizations, and interactions would be beneficial to answer particular data-driven questions. VAST Challenge problems provide researchers with realistic data sets and questions for evaluating their software, as well as an opportunity to advance the field by solving more complex problems. This year, we return to the Boonsong Lekagul Wildlife Preserve scenario from 2017. New complications have arisen from last year's situation, providing new opportunities to apply visual analytics and other analysis skills. Overview Mistford is a mid-size city located to the southwest of the Boonsong Lekagul Wildlife Preserve. The city has a small industrial area with four light-manufacturing endeavors. Mistford and the wildlife preserve are struggling with the possible endangerment of the Rose-Crested Blue Pipit, a locally loved bird. Is a local company causing the birds' demise? The scenario for this challenge builds on last year's but the challenges are new. Mini-Challenge 1: Analysis of audio data and geospatial temporal information Claims that the Rose-Crested Blue Pipit are healthy and vibrant across the whole preserve are in question. New visualizations are needed to further investigate the birds' situation. Perhaps these bird call recordings could provide more insight into the real situation? Blending machine learning and visual analytics may be a powerful combination for this mini-challenge. Visualization and analysis of some challenging large scale graph data may provide further insights on the scope of the company's activities. This challenge may prove to be a stretch task for all VAST Challenge participants! CfP: 3rd IEEE VIS Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities (http://vis4dh.org/) We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the 3rd Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities “VIS4DH ⇔ DH4VIS” <http://vis4dh.org/>, to be held as part of the IEEE VIS conference <http://ieeevis.org/year/2018/info/workshops>. The call is open to all fields of the humanities and all branches of visualization. We are particularly interested in papers that bring different disciplines together. In this year’s workshop we are looking to initiate a critical conversation about the often very different conceptual languages and vocabularies deployed across the humanities and visualization and the ways in which those vocabularies operate in applied visualization techniques in the digital humanities. One only need to look to the media arts, visual communication, information visualization, and digital humanities to see exciting new examples of interdisciplinary research. In this year’s workshop, we hope to feature some of this visual innovation in the realm of applied visualization as well as to explore new avenues for interdisciplinary and collaborative research between visualization and the humanities. We will explore different vocabularies and conceptual frameworks deployed by computing on the one hand and humanities on the other, and use these to think about how to engage differences as potentially rich opportunities rather than seeing them as barriers. Some guiding questions for the 2018 workshop: - How can we translate (and mutually enrich) the conceptual vocabularies of the humanities and visualization? How do projects at the intersection of humanities and visualization research mutually impact the respective fields? - How do collaborating humanities and visualization researchers balance theory, practice and making in their intellectual work? What kinds of products do they value, and how do they define rigor in their work? How does the dissemination of their results represent these tensions and balance? - How do debates from the cultural and visual turns of the humanities find themselves reflected in visualization strategies? How can our visualizations be said to embody values emerging from those debates? - What are the epistemological stakes of visualization? How might we characterize knowledge produced by visualization? How are knowledge and visualization design intertwined? - What kinds of meaning, information or satisfaction are sought by users when interacting with visualization? How does our notion of audience affect how we design? How do we balance innovation and accessibility? - How can visualization create innovative design solutions that communicate the specificities of humanities data? - Does visualization always depend on turning the humanities into a computational problem? Are humanities researchers interested only in platforms for deploying their research, not in research that will push both fields forward? Are there alternative views? This workshop is seeking work from scholars in both visualization and the humanities who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBMISSIONS Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page - excluding references) papers, falling into one of two submission types: Short Papers -- These submissions are meant to summarize more mature work in visualization for the digital humanities, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and propose solutions) of designing visualizations for the digital humanities. Applied work from the digital humanities that is highly visual in nature would also be considered for acceptance. Position Papers -- These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the digital humanities. These positions should be informed by a deep involvement and experience in one (or ideally, both) fields. Position papers should be thought-provoking but also well-supported. COMPUTER GRAPHICS & VISUAL COMPUTING 2018 (CGVC2018) The 36th Annual Conference organised by the UK chapter of the Eurographics Association, 13-14 September 2018, Swansea University, UK http://www.eguk.org.uk/CGVC2018/ Submission Deadline is this Friday ====================================================== The annual EGUK conference is a meeting place for all those in the UK working in computer graphics and visual computing (including, Computer Graphics and Vision, Information and Scientific Visualization, and Visual Analytics). It attracts researchers from across the country and from further afield. The 2018 conference Computer Graphics & Visual Computing will be an overnight meeting (lunchtime to lunchtime). The conference wants to focus on increasing the dialogue between academic research groups, researchers in academic and in industrial developments. In order to facilitate such dialogue, we are seeking contributions in the form of full papers, short papers, viewpoint papers, and extended abstracts (poster papers). • Full papers - a paper of 4 to 8 pages describing completed research, plus an additional page of references. Papers are refereed by members of an international program committee (IPC). Authors of accepted papers are expected to give a 20 minute presentation at the conference. Accepted papers will appear in the Eurographics digital library and will serve as full paper publications. • Short papers - The purpose of short papers is to present late-breaking results, work-in-progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. Short papers will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage double-blind process by an international program committee (IPC). They will be electronically archived and are fully citable publications. Submissions for the short paper track should be at most 4 pages, with an additional page allowed for references. Accepted short papers will be presented orally at the conference in (approximately) 15 minute presentations. • Viewpoint Papers (aka. Position paper, ***new in CGVC2018***) - Viewpoint paper track enables researchers a new possibility to publish their ideas. Viewpoints articles offer detailed technical opinions on trends in visual computing or reports on how visual computing has contributed to the comprehension of data or phenomena, without the need to present completed research work and/or validated results. We encourage discussions of challenges or limitations in today's methods and areas of potential new topics of research. We are also interested in application discussions that focus on, for example, the areas of physical, life or social sciences, engineering, or commerce, or areas related to the process of visual computing in general. We encourage an emphasis on lessons learned from practical experience for application discussions, particularly where visual computing has been employed in a real, working environment. Viewpoint papers are submitted with author names and affiliations (at most 4-pages). Accepted viewpoint papers will be electronically archived, are fully citable publications and will be presented orally at the conference in (approximately) 15 minute presentations. Submissions to the full, short and viewpoint paper tracks that are not accepted for publication but are deemed suitable for poster presentation by the IPC will be offered an opportunity to present in the poster track. • Extended Abstracts (Poster Papers) - CGVC 2018 is re-introducing a poster track. The purpose of this track is to present late-breaking results, work in progress, and follow-up extensions or evaluations of existing methods. In particular, it provides young researchers, especially postgraduate students, with valuable opportunities to receive feedback from other researchers, and engage in stimulating discussions. The poster track will be managed by the co-chair team and the International Program Committee (IPC) for the papers track. We solicit poster submissions in the form of a poster and an accompanying sketch (i.e., an extended abstract of at most 2 pages, with an additional page allowed for references only). Posters will be peer-reviewed in a one-stage double-blind process. Accepted posters will be presented at the poster viewing session of the conference. GD 2018 will take place September 26-28, 2018 at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. PAPERS ------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoretical or practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. All papers in all tracks will undergo single-blind reviewing. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects ---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such as combinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms * Geometric graph theory * Geometric computing * Planarity and topological graph theory * Optimization on graphs Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects ----------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such as the development of network visualization systems and interfaces in different application areas. The range of topics for this track includes (but is not limited to): * Visualization of graphs and networks in real world applications, including big data * Engineering of network visualization algorithms and systems * Experimental results in graph theory and algorithms * Benchmarks and experimental studies of network visualization systems and user interfaces * Cognitive studies on graph drawing readability and user interaction * Interfaces and methods for interacting with graphs Authors of applied papers will have the opportunity to show a demo of their software/system during the poster session. Short papers ------------ In addition to the above two tracks, there will be a separate category for short papers, describing theoretical or applied contributions of shorter length. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. Submission format ----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file for the conference series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Springer provides the style file in Overleaf with the option to directly submit the final paper from Overleaf; see the conference web site for details. Submissions that do not comply with this format risk rejection without consideration of their merits. The length of regular papers is limited to 12 pages (excluding references), while the length of short papers is limited to 6 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. Author must submit the complete paper (including the appendix) by the deadline. Minor typographical corrections will be allowed for 2 days following the deadline. All submissions will be handled through easyChair at the web site https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd18 POSTERS ------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to 2 pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted together with the poster itself. CONTEST ------- Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference are provided on the conference web site at http://graphdrawing.de/contest2018/contest.html PUBLICATION ----------- All accepted papers (including the two-page poster abstracts) will appear in the conference proceedings, published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series. Twelve pages (excluding references) will be allocated for regular papers and six pages (excluding references) for short papers. The copyright to these proceedings will be held by Springer. The LNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community upon publication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. Authors will be required to submit their accepted papers to the arXiv repository, in order to provide immediate and unrestricted open access to them. The self-archived arXiv papers shall consist of the LNCS proceedings (identical, except for possibly changed references to the appendix resp. the arXiv version) plus an optional clearly marked appendix. This appendix could contain a long version of the entire paper or proofs that have been omitted from the main text. Subsequent submissions of different versions of the paper to the arXiv (known as arXiv ``replacements'') are allowed. Upon submission of the camera-ready version of an accepted paper, the authors will be required to specify the arXiv identifier associated with the paper for inclusion in a conference index, which will be also published in the arXiv repository. Failure to comply with these guidelines will impede the publication of the paper. Each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author (baring unforeseen circumstances), otherwise the paper/poster will not be included in the proceedings. Should any visa restriction prevent an author from attending the conference and presenting a paper, he/she will be given ways to participate and give the talk via electronic means. Selected papers from both tracks will be invited for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA). The authors of the best paper in Track 2 will be invited to submit a substantially extended and enhanced version of their work to IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG). AWARDS ------ For each of the two tracks, the Program Committee of GD 2018 will give a Best Paper Award. In addition, to recognize the effort of participants to present their work and to prepare their posters in a clear and elegant way, there will be a Best Presentation Award and a Best Poster Award voted on by the GD 2018 attendees. *** Please distribute widely throughout your institutions as appropriate DEADLINE: *June 15th 2018* The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC <http://vgtc.org/>) sponsors the annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG <http://vgtc.org/content/ieee-vgtc-visualization-pioneers-group>) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the IEEE VIS <http://ieeevis.org/> conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between August 15 two years before the award and August 15 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between August 15, 2016 and August 15, 2018 are eligible for the 2018 competition). SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1. AWARD The winner of the IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) <http://www.computer.org/cga>. Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world. Thesis Advisor(s) of the winning entrant will chair the following year’s Dissertation Review Committee, with full support from the VPG OC to handle details such as publicity and administration. The Algorithms and Complexity Group at TU Wien (http://www.ac.tuwien.ac.at) invites applications for two open positions (one postdoc, one PhD student) in the FWF project "Human-Centered Algorithm Engineering: Graph and Map Visualization". The project is funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) and deals with algorithmic problems in graph visualization and cartography that tightly integrate human expertise into the algorithmic optimization process. It combines aspects of algorithm engineering, information visualization, and human-computer interaction. The intended starting date of both positions is September 1, 2018 (with some flexibility). Applicants for the _postdoc position_ should have a doctoral degree in computer science (or a related field) with a focus on visualization algorithms, visual analytics, human-computer interaction, or some other project-related area, as proven by the publication track record. A strong research interest in combining algorithmic techniques and human interaction in theory and practice is necessary. Applicants for the _PhD student position_ should have an excellent Master degree (or equivalent) in computer science or a related subject with a focus on algorithmics or algorithm engineering, good programming skills and a strong research interest in human-in-the-loop visualization algorithms, computational cartography, or graph drawing.
