*2 Immersive Technologies/Learning Post Doc Opportunities* ChoroPhronesis, in collaboration with other groups such as Teaching and Learning with Technology, the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing, the Pulse of the Earth Lab (and others), at The Pennsylvania State University, are delighted to announce the opening of two postdoctoral research positions. The postdocs will be working in vibrant transdiciplinary teams that are addressing a range of topics that see transformative changes due to the potentially paradigm shifting nature of immersive technologies. Example topics include: ·Empirically validating immersive learning across the academic spectrum; ·Immersive decision-making for environmental decision making; ·Connecting immersive experiences to environmental and ecological modeling; ·Immersive storytelling; ·3D modeling and design; ·Foundations of immersive technologies. The postdocs will be coordinated through ChoroPhronesis (founded by Dr. Alexander Klippel) but will work across projects at The Pennsylvania State University and could have their primary home in units such as the Stuckeman Center for Design Computing or Teaching and Learning with Technology. In conjunction with IEEE VIS 2018. *** Submission Deadline: July 17, 2018 *** MOTIVATION AND BACKGROUND The goal of DSIA is to foster innovative research at the intersection of databases, machine learning, and interactive visualization. In this workshop, we will explore the idea that the next generation of database, machine learning, and interactive visualization systems should not be designed in isolation. For example, machine learning techniques might recommend improved data transformation and visual encoding decisions. Or, database query optimizers might take advantage of perceptual constraints, while prefetching methods reduce latency by modeling likely interactions. This workshop seeks to jump start cross-pollination between these fields. The program will be split between invited talks from researchers in these communities, and speculative, ongoing work that straddles the areas. LIST OF TOPICS This workshop will focus on interactive systems: techniques, methods, architecture, systems that enable the user to interactively explore and analyze large amounts of data in the back end with little or no latency. It has a wide range of application areas including, design, architecture, education, and personal analytics (see www.dataphys.org<http://www.dataphys.org>/ for a comprehensive list). However, despite of the large variety of case studies in this area, a principled way of encoding data into physical artifacts has yet to be established. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different research communities (in particular visualization, HCI, and design) to discuss approaches toward a unified design language for data physicalization. Through a series of invited talks, alternating with small-group activity-based discussions, the workshop will start to consolidate different efforts of characterizing and evaluating the core properties or “variables” that drive data physicalization, and to define a research agenda in this area. We aim for this workshop to invite a diverse audience from all fields of professional practice, research, and education from the fields of information design, visualization, and human data interaction. WORKSHOP TOPICS Workshop submissions may approach the topic of physicalization design practices from a theoretical, practical, and/or empirical perspective. Topics include but are not limited to: * Design space of data physicalization * Data physicalization as a design practice * Design patterns of data physicalization * Systematic approaches to translating visual variables into physical data encodings * Studies of physical properties from a perceptual perspective * Teaching data mappings through physicalization in a systematic way * Considering material choices * Fabrication for physicalization (digital, manual, mixed) * The influence of physical environment, usage scenarios, and interaction models on physicalization design and physical encodings * Physical encodings in the context of data / visualization literacy In general, we very much welcome provocative works on the topic as well as works in progress. Works may build on previously published work, but should contribute a new perspective on the topic. All papers will be peer-reviewed by at least two researchers in the area. Accepted works will be made available on the workshop website and included on the IEEE VIS USB key. Accepted papers will be given an oral presentation slot at the workshop. At least one author of each accepted paper needs to register for the conference (even if only for the workshop). Our intention in this workshop is to pull expertise from across all fields of VIS in order to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction and where we can go with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques across fields within the VIS community, rather than the current state of having these discussions independently contained within the SciVis/InfoVis/VAST fields. The reasons why stories have been told are manifold: to entertain, to transfer knowledge between generations, to keep cultural heritage, or to warn others of dangers. With the emergence of the digitalization of media many new possibilities to tell stories emerged in serious and non-entertainment contexts. A very simple example is the idea of serious gaming - thus digital games without primarily an entertainment purpose. Within this handbook, we generalize the approach of serious games, on other genres of digital storytelling, and call for handbook typical contributions which introduce "serious storytelling: storytelling with a purpose beyond entertainment" as new approach. We seek for handbook alike contributions, reviews of existing application areas, established theories and methods, fundamental concepts, ground breaking research results in a transdisciplinary approach. The handbook shall range across domains, and illustrate storytelling outside an entertainment context in e.g. data science, artificial intelligence, well-being and health, medicine, psychology, education, ethical problem solving, eLeadership, and business/management, robotics, storytelling in deep learning and big data, qualitative journalism, serious games, storytelling in simulations, HCI research and storytelling, VR/AR training, user-experience studies, and online communication. As it's a handbook, contributions not essentially need to be new, we also seek for proofed concepts, methods, existing projects, and ideas that contribute to a handbook type of book. We would like to focus on shaping a NOVEL research direction, and define Digital Serious Storytelling as a new research pathway. Therefore, we are seeking for establishing theory. As we would like to have a tightly controlled editing process, we will mix authors of different contributions as well as we will step into the chapter authoring processes as it is required to get a red line through the book. We would not like to have an edited book consisting of a set of loosely connected chapters. We want to create a reference book, which will have impact, and act as teaching reference. **Reposting due to missing dates in the previous post** IUI CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS In conjunction with the 24th International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2019) Los Angeles, CA, USA March 17 - 20, 2019 http://iui.acm.org/ ================================================================================= IUI 2019 is pleased to invite proposals for workshops to be held in conjunction with the conference. The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Workshops will be held on the last day of the conference. We invite submissions of full-day (6 hours) and half-day (3 hours) workshop proposals on any of the conference topics (or related). We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops, including but not limited to: - "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. - "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only). - "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement. - "Project centric" workshops that may be closely related to the scope of an existing large scale (e.g. NSF, EU, etc. funded) project. - "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hackathons around selected topics with individual or team participation. =============== PROPOSAL FORMAT =============== Note: One of the keys to a successful workshop submission is to CONTACT THE CHAIRS WITH YOUR IDEAS (workshop-iui2019(a)acm.org) and work together to prepare an exciting proposal! This can be a single person or a group of people. Strong proposals normally include organizers who bring differing perspectives on the topic and are actively connected to the communities of potential participants. Please indicate the primary contact person and the organizers who plan to attend the workshop. - Previous history: List of previous workshops that were held on the topic including the conferences that hosted past workshops and the number of participants. Also please provide the list of other workshops organized by workshop organizers in the past. - Workshop program committee: Names and affiliation of the members of the (tentative) workshop program committee that will evaluate the workshop submissions. - Participants: A statement saying how many participants you expect and how you plan to invite participants for the workshop. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS The VisInPractice program at IEEE VIS<http://ieeevis.org/> is an opportunity for visualization practitioners and researchers to meet and share experiences, insights, and ideas in applying visualization and visual analytics to real-world use cases. VisInPractice seeks to acknowledge successful transfers of visualization research into applications as well as current visualization practices occurring in industry. Our primary goal is to supplement the successful program of IEEE VIS with content that is relevant to visualization practitioners. VisInPractice Mini-Symposium on Visualizing Uncertainty The VisInPractice 2018 Program<http://www.visinpractice.rwth-aachen.de/program.html> will include a fast-paced, single-session mini-symposium on the practical aspects of uncertainty visualization. Prefaced with a primer talk by Kristi Potter<https://www.nrel.gov/research/kristi-potter.html> from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the event will also include six 10-minute lightning talks. Submission Details We now encourage submissions for these lightning talks via the Precision Conference submission system<https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions>. We ask for a concise 250-word abstract, a 150-word paragraph on what a practitioner can expect to learn from the talk, and one descriptive image figure. Rather than focusing on the academic sophistication of your solution, you must clearly present the practical relevance of your approach. Successful submissions will communicate the general impact of their approach beyond the their specialized application area. Your 250-word abstract should answer the following questions: * What form does your data take and how does uncertainty manifest in it? * What task are you addressing? * How does your visualization solution address uncertainty in the data? * What were the results of applying your solution? We also ask for a 150-word statement that indicates what a practitioner can expect to learn from the talk, answering the following questions with regards to visualizing uncertainty: * What new insight will the audience gain? * What new ability can they apply in their own practice? Based on this input, the VisInPractice Chairs will select the topics that make up the session. We are looking forward to your submissions and to a lively discussion at VisInPractice 2018.
