Interactive and Spatial Computing focuses on the real-time interactions among humans and computers, and the spatial information, qualities, technologies, and relationships that influence those interactions. Considering this broad scope, Interactive and Spatial Computing involves a wide range of research activities from many disciplines like augmented reality, computational geometry, computer graphics, computer vision, geographic information systems, human-computer interaction, human-robot interaction, information visualization, mixed reality, multimedia, and virtual reality. These research activities enhance human knowledge and performance through numerous applications and domains, such as bioinformatics, education, entertainment, healthcare, manufacturing, rehabilitation, smart cities, therapy, and training. IWISC is a venue for researchers from this broad spectrum of applications and domains to convene and discuss the next generation of interdisciplinary ideas related to Interactive and Spatial Computing. Call for Papers The 4th International Workshop on Interactive and Spatial Computing (IWISC 2019) will address the challenges and opportunities faced in this broad and yet important discipline. We solicit high quality, original research submissions in all areas related to Interactive and Spatial computing, including, but not limited to, the following topics: * Augmented reality * Computational geometry * Computer graphics * Computer vision * Geographic information systems * Human-computer interaction * Human-robot interaction * Information visualization * Mixed reality * Multimedia * Virtual reality A Best Paper Award will be given for the most outstanding paper in terms of groundbreaking research, ingenuity, and importance. Submission Deadlines All deadlines are Anywhere on Earth (GMT/UTC‐12:00). * January 11, 2019: Paper submissions due * February 15, 2019: Notification of results * March 1, 2019: Camera-ready material due Submission Guidelines All papers must be original and not simultaneously submitted to another journal or conference. Submissions should contain substantial scientific contributions to the field of Interactive and Spatial Computing. Each paper should be classifiable as one of the following: * Research papers should contribute state-of-the-art advances and provide results as evidence. * Application papers should explain how pre-existing ideas were applied to solve a novel problem. * System papers should indicate how developers integrated techniques and technologies to produce a novel system and provide evidence of the system’s effectiveness. All papers should be prepared in the ACM SigConf format. This approach works well with sufficient high-quality meta-data or tagging. However, with the explosive growth of big data collections, it has become apparent that tagging new data quickly and efficiently is not always possible. Secondly, even if instantaneous high-quality data tagging were possible, there would still be many instances, where search by keyword query is problematic. For example, in the case of image retrieval it might be easier for a user to define their query if they are looking for an image of a cat, but how would they specify that the cat should be of a particular shade of ginger with sad looking eyes? A solution to these problems is active engagement of the user in the information retrieval loop, thus enabling the user to not only explore a given dataset more easily but also gradually direct their search to a more specific area of the search space. The aim of this workshop is to explore new methods and interface/system design for interactive data analytics and management in various domains, including specialised text collections (e.g. legal, medical, scientific), multimedia, and bioinformatics, as well as for various tasks, such as semantic information retrieval, conceptual organization and clustering of data collections for sense-making, semantic expert profiling, and document/multimedia recommender systems. The primary audience of the workshop is researchers and practitioners in the area of interactive and personalized system design as well as interactive machine learning both from academia and industry. IUI, with its focus on the intersection of HCI and AI, is a perfect venue where researchers from system/interface design community and the machine learning community can meet. Workshop Target Areas The workshop aims to solicit submissions in all areas of interactive data analytics and exploratory search including: - design, testing and assessment of interactive systems for data analytics - interactive data visualization for exploratory and investigative analysis - interactive classification and clustering of data - user-assisted curation and validation of the analysis process, and generation of data visualizations - user engagement in the semantic analysis process via suitable annotation and correction tools - study of the trade-off between accuracy of the results and user effort - personalization and user modeling related to interactive system design Submissions aimed at solving practical problems in specific application domains are especially welcome, including: - digital libraries - legal document management - personalized online learning systems - news media - biomedical data - multimedia collections - specialized image and video collections, e.g. medical images. In 2019, IUI will be held in the Marriott Marina Del Rey in Los Angeles, CA from March 17th - 20th. ACM IUI is where the Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) community meets the Artificial Intelligence (AI) community, also accepting contributions from related fields such as psychology, behavioral science, cognitive science, computer graphics, design or the arts. This year we especially encourage submissions on explainable intelligent user interfaces for IUI 2019. ** Why you should submit to ACM IUI ** At ACM IUI, we focus on the interaction between machine intelligence and human intelligence. While other conferences focus on one side or the other, we address the complex interaction between the two. Best, alex Tenure-track faculty position in GIScience (assistant professor) The Department of Geography at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in geographic information science (GIScience). We are interested in candidates who will strengthen the department’s research and teaching program and help build strong connections to other relevant science communities. Candidates with an emphasis in any area associated with GIScience will be considered. A PhD degree completed before August 1, 2019, is expected. Excellence in teaching, research, and service is expected of professors employed by Penn State Geography, as is development of an externally funded research program. Participation in the department`s online geospatial education programs is also expected. *CFP: Interactive Visualizations for Sustainability** **A special issue of Multimodal Technologies and Interaction Journal** **Deadline for manuscript submissions: 31 March 2019** **https://www.mdpi.com/journal/mti/special_issues/visualizations_sustainability* Rapidly increasing global consumption of natural resources demands for more efficient use, as well as for more sustainable management of energy, water, minerals, land and other natural resources. Human-centred technologies, tools and services can provide effective solutions to support sustainability in different domains. To create better awareness, and support human decision making, such technologies, tools and services should provide advanced interactive visualization capabilities to their users to allow them to monitor, manage, compare, or share and use data, with the aim of identifying patterns and supporting efficiency in the use of natural resources. This special issue will focus on interactive visualizations for sustainability-related applications, tools, games, and services in the private, public, and industrial sectors. Tapestry brings together journalists, designers, academics, people from non-profits and industry who want to learn more about how to present and communicate data. This year, the conferences will take place in Miami, FL, November 29 and 30.
