Visualization Show Case – CARLA 2018 Building on the great success of the previous nine editions, this year the Latin American Conference on High Performance Computing (CARLA 2018) will be held in the Guatiguará Technology Park, in Piedecuesta town at Metropolitan Area of Bucaramanga City in Colombia, from September 26 to 28. The Visualization Showcase presents the convergence of novel methods, algorithms, technologies and creative processes to produce scientific imagery and its applications to enable scientific discovery. The visualization should show the science behind and highlight insights gained from analyzing the simulation results. Authors are invited to submit posters and visualization demos as short papers describing the scientific problem the simulation seeks to solve and methods, tools, techniques, etc. employed to enable discovery through visualization. Instructions for Authors Short papers must be written in English and not exceed 4 pages following the Springer LNCS/CCIS style. Proposals should be submitted in PDF file format using EasyChair under the topic “Visualization Show Case”. All paper submissions will be carefully reviewed by three experts and returned to the author(s). The authors of accepted papers must guarantee their presentation during the conference. Poster display format details will be send to authors of accepted proposals. For visualization demos, authors must submit an open access link to a supplemental video of at least 1 minute supporting their short paper. Accepted proposals will be presented in a special session during the regular program of the conference and short papers will be published in special proceedings. Prof. Min Chen (University of Oxford, UK) Abstract: Seven decades ago, Claude Shannon's landmark article "A Mathematical Theory of Communication" (1948) laid down the foundation of modern tele- and data communication, giving rise to information theory as an academic subject. In this talk, the speaker will describe the applications of information theory to visualization and demonstrate how information theory can explain numerous phenomena in visualization. In particular, the speaker will discuss an information-theoretic metric for analysing the cost-benefit of data intelligence workflows, elaborating the values of visualization in such workflows. The speaker will also outline conjectures that the metric may potentially have implications beyond data science. Short Bio: Min Chen developed his academic career in Wales between 1984 and 2011. He is currently the professor of scientific visualization at Oxford University and a fellow of Pembroke College. His research interests include visualization, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, and aspects of computer vision. He has co-authored some 200 publications, including his recent contributions in areas such as theory of visualization, video visualization, visual analytics, and perception and cognition in visualization. He has worked on a broad spectrum of interdisciplinary research topics, ranging from the sciences to sports, and from digital humanities to cybersecurity. His services to the research community include papers co-chair of IEEE Visualization 2007 and 2008, Eurographics 2011, IEEE VAST 2014 and 2015; co-chair of Volume Graphics 1999 and 2006, EuroVis 2014; associate editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics; and co-director of Wales Research Institute of Visual Computing. He is currently an editor-in-chief of Computer Graphics Forum. He is a fellow of British Computer Society, European Computer Graphics Association, and Learned Society of Wales. See also: https://sites.google.com/site/drminchen/ Keynote Speech 2: Design after Nature Prof. Jon McCormack (Monash University, Australia) Abstract: Nature has driven us in what and how we create for millennia. Biomimetic approaches to human design are inspired by natural forms, shapes and processes. In computing, nature-inspired algorithms mimic collective behaviour or biological evolution to solve hard problems in search, optimisation and learning. In this talk I’ll show how I have developed a creative visual design practice informed by processes from biological development, the architecture of natural form, and evolutionary processes. My work began by devising advanced visual models of morphogenetic development in plants. Incorporating evolutionary processes allowed designs to emerge that would be difficult or impossible to discover independently, making them “beyond human design”. In later work, I have experimented with evolutionary ecosystems and processes such as niche construction to encourage diversity in the visual style of works generated by algorithmic processes. My most recent work looks at translating from the virtual back to the real, using digital fabrication technologies driven by generative computational processes. The goal is to build dynamic, responsive, intelligent physical systems that interact directly with living organisms, symbiotically affecting their growth and development. This leads to the creation of bio-machine hybrids – bringing the biomimetic concept full circle – and heralding a new form of co-design where human, machine and nature all contribute to the design process. Short Bio: Jon McCormack is an Australian-based artist and researcher in computing. He holds an Honours degree in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science from Monash University, a Graduate Diploma of Art (Film and Television) from Swinburne University and a PhD in Computer Science from Monash University. He is currently full Professor of Computer Science and director of sensiLab at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. His research interests include generative art, design and music, evolutionary systems, computer creativity, visualisation, virtual reality, interaction design, physical computing, machine learning, L-systems and developmental models. Since the late 1980s McCormack has worked with computer code as a medium for creative expression. The VisInPractice program at IEEE VIS<http://ieeevis.org/> is an opportunity for visualization practitioners and researchers to meet and share experiences, insights, and ideas in applying visualization and visual analytics to real-world use cases. VisInPractice seeks to acknowledge successful transfers of visualization research into applications as well as current visualization practices occurring in industry. Our primary goal is to supplement the successful program of IEEE VIS with content that is relevant to visualization practitioners. VisInPractice Mini-Symposium on Visualizing Uncertainty The VisInPractice 2018 Program<http://www.visinpractice.rwth-aachen.de/program.html> will include a fast-paced, single-session mini-symposium on the practical aspects of uncertainty visualization. Prefaced with a primer talk by Kristi Potter<https://www.nrel.gov/research/kristi-potter.html> from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, the event will also include six 10-minute lightning talks. Submission Details We now encourage submissions for these lightning talks via the Precision Conference submission system<https://new.precisionconference.com/submissions>. We ask for a concise 250-word abstract, a 150-word paragraph on what a practitioner can expect to learn from the talk, and one descriptive image figure. Rather than focusing on the academic sophistication of your solution, you must clearly present the practical relevance of your approach. Successful submissions will communicate the general impact of their approach beyond the their specialized application area. Your 250-word abstract should answer the following questions: * What form does your data take and how does uncertainty manifest in it? * What task are you addressing? * How does your visualization solution address uncertainty in the data? * What were the results of applying your solution? IEEE VIS 2018 Workshop: MACHINE LEARNING FROM USER INTERACTION FOR VISUALIZATION AND ANALYTICS CALL FOR PAPERS Date and Location: October 21 or 22, 2018 in Berlin, Germany Website: https://learningfromusersworkshop.github.io/ <https://learningfromusersworkshop.github.io/> The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from across the VIS community – SciVis, InfoVis, and VAST – to share their knowledge and build collaborations at the intersection of the Machine Learning and Visualization fields, with a focus on learning from user interaction. Our intention in this workshop is to pull expertise from across all fields of VIS in order to generate open discussion about how we currently learn from user interaction and where we can go with future research in this area. We hope to foster discussion regarding systems, interaction models, and interaction techniques across fields within the VIS community, rather than the current state of having these discussions independently contained within the SciVis/InfoVis/VAST fields. Further, we hope to collaboratively create a research agenda that explores the future of machine learning with user interaction based on the discussion during the workshop. WORKSHOP TOPICS The topic of the workshop will focus on issues and opportunities related to the use of machine learning to learn from user interaction in the course of data visualization and analysis. Specifically, we will focus on research questions including: How are machine learning algorithms currently learning from user interaction, and what other possibilities exist? What kinds of interactions can provide feedback to machine learning algorithms? What can machine learning algorithms learn from interactions? Which machine learning algorithms are most applicable in this domain? How can machine learning algorithms be designed to enable user interaction and feedback? How can visualizations and interactions be designed to exploit machine learning algorithms? How can visualization system architectures be designed to support machine learning? How should we manage conflicts between the user’s intent and the data or machine learning algorithm capabilities? How can we evaluate systems that incorporate both machine learning algorithms and user interaction together? How can machine learning and user interaction together make both computation and user cognition more efficient? How can we support the sensemaking process by learning from user interaction? SUBMISSIONS We have two submission tracks: for papers and for posters. Papers We invite research and position papers between 5 and 10 pages in length (NOT including references). All submissions must be formatted according to the VGTC conference style template <http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html> (i.e., NOT the journal style template that full papers use). He participated in research and development efforts in the EU 7th Framework Project PESCaDO and coordinated the University of Stuttgart participation in the BMBF-Project VASA. His research interests cover the areas of visual analytics, data mining, information retrieval, and social media monitoring. *Issei Fujishiro* Keio University, Japan Fujishiro is currently Chief Professor of the Center for Information and Computer Science, Graduate School of Science and Technology, Keio University, Yokohama. His research interests include volume visualization/graphics, applied visualization design, and smart multi-modal ambient media. He is serving on the steering committee for IEEE SciVis and IEEE PacificVis and serving as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics and Elsevier Journal of Visual Informatics as well as a SciVis Papers Co-Chair for IEEE VIS 2018. Fujishiro is a member of Science Council of Japan. *Jaegul Choo* Korea University, South Korea Jaegul Choo is an assistant professor in the Dept. of Computer Science and Engineering at Korea University. He focuses on the intersection of machine learning and visual analytics, publishing over 60 peer-reviewed technical articles in premier venues in both fields such as TVCG, CHI, VAST, CG&A, CVPR, AAAI, IJCAI, KDD, WWW, WSDM, ICDM, TKDD, DMKD, ICWSM, and SDM. He earned the Best Student Paper at ICDM’16, the Outstanding Research Scientist Award at Georgia Tech in 2015, and he was nominated as one of the four finalists for the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group dissertation award in 2013. *Kwan-Liu Ma* UC Davis, USA Kwan-Liu Ma is a professor of computer science, where he directs VIDI Labs and UC Davis Center of Excellence for Visualization. His research spans the fields of visualization, computer graphics, high-performance computing, and user interface design. Professor Ma is presently leading a team of over 25 researchers pursuing research in scientific visualization, information visualization, visual analytics, visualization for storytelling, visualization interface design, and immersive visualization. *Rüdiger Westermann* Technical University of Munich, Germany Ruediger Westermann studied computer science at the Technical University Darmstadt and received the Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Dortmund, both in Germany. In 2002, he was appointed the chair of Computer Graphics and Visualization at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He is one of the main drivers of the Visual Computing and Computer Games initiatives at TUM. His research interests include scalable data visualization and simulation algorithms, uncertainty visualization, GPU computing, and real-time rendering. *Stefan Bruckner* University of Bergen, Norway Stefan Bruckner is a full professor in Visualization at the Department of Informatics of the University of Bergen, Norway. His research interests include all aspects of data visualization, with a particular focus on interactive techniques for the exploration and analysis of spatial data. He has made significant contributions to areas such as illustrative visualization, volume rendering, smart visual interfaces, biomedical data visualization, and visual parameter space exploration. In addition to his contributions in basic research, he has successfully led industry collaborations with major companies such as GE Healthcare and Agfa HealthCare, and has 6 granted patents. *Tobias Schreck* Graz University of Technology, Austria. Tobias Schreck is a Professor with the Institute of Computer Graphics and Knowledge Visualization at Graz University of Technology, Austria. He works in the areas of Visual Analytics and Digital Libraries. His research interests include visual pattern search and analysis in time-oriented, high-dimensional and 3D object data, with applications in data analysis, multimedia retrieval and cultural heritage. He has co-authored more than 150 papers in his research areas. He is currently a principal investigator in several Austrian state-funded research projects on Immersive and Visual Data Analysis for industrial applications. *Wei Chen* Zhejiang University, China Wei Chen is a professor at the State Key Lab of CAD & CG, Zhejiang University. He has performed research in computer graphics and visualization and published more than 60 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers in the last five years. His current research interests include scientific visualization, visual analytics and bio-medical image computing. *Xiaoyang Mao* University of Yamanashi, Japan Xiaoyang Mao received her B.S. in Computer Science from Fudan University, M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Tokyo. She is currently a professor at Computer Science and Engineering Department, University of Yamanashi, Japan. Her research interests include texture synthesis, visual perception, non-photo-realistic rendering, VR/AR and their application to visualization. *Yingcai Wu* Zhejiang University, China Yingcai Wu is a ZJU100 Young Professor at the State Key Lab of CAD & CG, Zhejiang University. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Prior to his current position, Yingcai Wu was a researcher in the Microsoft Research Asia, from 2012 to 2015, and a postdoctoral researcher in the University of California, Davis from 2010 to 2012. His main research interests are in visual analytics, information visualization, and human-computer interaction, with focuses on urban computing and sports analysis.
