CHALLENGES OF DIGITAL ART FOR OUR SOCIETIES – International Conference MUMOK - Museum moderner Kunst, Museumsplatz 1, Vienna, December 4th 2015, 1 – 7 pm "What kind of museums are necessary for contemporary (digital) art?" Digital art and technology fundamentally changes our perception and interaction with images. The international conference „Challenges of Digital Art" addresses the impact of this shift for the expressive potential of contemporary media art. 200 biennales and over 100 well-attended festivals dedicated to media art prove that media artists are addressing our ever-changing world view through a multitude of artworks focusing on themes that include climate change, image and media (r-)evolution, globalization, future of the body, surveillance society, and the virtualization of financial markets. Yet, while these outstanding artists engage the social and cultural questions of our time, media art continues to be insufficiently collected and inadequately documented in memory institutions due to problems in museum structures and media storage. Today, media artworks are gradually becoming lost because the museum sector is not able to fulfill its public duty to collect, research, and make accessible contemporary media art. The marginalization of media art and its themes in the public-financed museum sector leads to serious democratic issues – this development should be counteracted. The challenge for the humanities is to document and analyze digital artworks and, moreover, to provide solutions to this essential dilemma in contemporary cultural politics. This pressing agenda was previously addressed in the ‘Liverpool Declaration’, which so far over 500 scientists and museum directors from over 40 countries have signed (http://www.mediaarthistory.org/declaration) It is these questions that frame the conference. Bringing together internationally renowned scholars, the focus of the talks and discussions will be the strengthening of education and training of future curators and archivists in the cultural and arts sector as well as the formation of a sustainable research infrastructure. Towards these goals, the researches in the area of digital humanities will play a vital role. Manovich is a Professor at The Graduate Center, CUNY, and a Director of the Software Studies Initiative that works on the analysis and visualization of big visual cultural data. He was included in the list of "25 People Shaping the Future of Design" (2013) and also the list of "50 Most Interesting People Building the Future" (2014). Sean Cubitt is Professor of Film and Television at Goldsmiths, University of London, fellow at the University of Melbourne and honorary professor at the University of Dundee. His publications includeVideography: Video Media as Art and Culture (Palgrave, 1993), Timeshift: On Video Culture (Routledge, 2003), Simulation and Social Theory (SAGE, 2001), The Cinema Effect (MIT Press, 2005), EcoMedia (Rodopi, 2005), Digital Aesthetics (Sage, 2009) und The Practice of Light: A Genealogy of Visual Technology from Prints to Pixels (MIT Press, 2014). He investigates the history and philosophy of visual technology, media art histories, and mediation. Furthermore, he is a well-established speaker, who addresses questions of the interconnectivity of digital archives. Christiane Paul (Whitney Museum, New School, NY) is one of the most influential curators of media art. Since the 1990s, she developed countless exhibitions. Recently she prepared INDAF Digital Art Festival (Inchon, South Korea, 2009), Eduardo Kac: Biotopes (Rio de Janeiro, 2010), Cory Arcangel: Pro Tools (New York, 2011), The Public Private (Kellen Gallery, The New School, 2013) and Scalable Relations (California, 2009). Paul is professor at the New School, NY and leads the ‚Media Studies Graduate Program‘. Digital Art (Thames & Hudson 2003) and Context Providers: Conditions of Meaning in Media Arts (Intellect, 2011) are already classics in the field. Oliver Grau is chair professor of image science at the Danube-University. His book Virtual Art: From Illusion to Immersion (MIT Press, 2003) is the internationally most-quoted publication of contemporary art history. He is editor of Mediale Emotionen (Fischer, 2005), MediaArtHistories (MIT Press, 2007) and Imagery in the 21st Century (MIT Press 2011). Grau is member of the Academia Europaea (MAE), his publications were translated in 14 languages, and he was invited to over 300 lectures and key notes all over the world. His research focuses on the history and theory of media art, immersion and emotions as well as the history, idea, and culture of telepresence and artificial life. However, the emotional states of users are rarely taken into account when developing interaction techniques and/or the visual representations themselves. In many application scenarios, it would be beneficial if emotional measurements could be visualized in order to raise user awareness of their own and others' emotional states as well as how these emotions influence their reasoning and decision making. Additionally, with the help of emotional data, certain visualization systems should be able to adapt to the users’ mental models, cognitive processes and emotional states in terms of interaction and visual representation in order to support the analysis and exploration process. Our goal is to foster this novel area of visualization that takes user affective states into consideration. The EmoVis 2016 workshop is co-located with the ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (ACM IUI 2016) and welcomes researchers, practitioners and experts from a variety of scientific domains, including visualization, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and multimedia. This workshop will act as a forum where people with diverse backgrounds can present design principles and introduce novel techniques for affect measurement and visualization. We invite submissions that explore user emotional states in context of interactive visualization. PostDoc: Visualization, machine learning and data analysis applied to neuroscience We are seeking a highly-motivated postdoctoral fellow in computational neuroscience to be part of an interdisciplinary research alliance working to develop mobile brain/body imaging experimental and data analysis methods in support of a research program in neuroergonomics ('the study of the brain and body at work'). An overall goal of the research is to discover underlying principles describing the relationship of non-invasively recorded EEG brain dynamics and motivated behavior (recorded by body motion capture, eye tracking, etc) in interactive, information-rich human-system operating environments and to apply these principles to develop tools to monitor, assess, and assist human performance. Desired skills and experience To apply for this position, you should have a PhD in some area of computation, visualization, statistics, machine learning, signal processing, or applied mathematics. You should also have experience working with data in some area of science. Knowledge of neuroscience or cognitive science is a plus but not required. Ability to develop tools in MATLAB and/or Python is desirable and some programming skill is required. Applicants must be US citizens. The selected candidate would be primarily based near Baltimore, Maryland at the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Aberdeen, MD, where he/she will collaborate with a group of Army-funded government and industry researchers in gathering and analyzing data from successively more complex and realistic experiments. Postdoctoral Fellowships in Biomedical Data Visualization

Multiple postdoctoral fellowships are available immediately in the Gehlenborg Lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at Harvard Medical School. The goal of the lab is to improve human health by developing computational techniques and interfaces that enable biomedical and clinical investigators to efficiently interact with biomedical data. We design, implement and evaluate methods and tools that leverage the knowledge and cognitive skills of investigators in order to enable the interpretation of massive heterogeneous data sets that integrate genomic and clinical data. Possible research projects include development of data visualization, analysis, and management tools to study genomic structural variants, dynamics of the 3D genome, and cancer subtypes in patient cohorts. Further projects involve the design and implementation of visual exploration tools for biomedical data repositories and tools for viewing and interacting with provenance graphs. All of the projects are highly interdisciplinary and are being conducted in close cooperation with computational or experimental domain experts providing an excellent opportunity for collaborative research. Our lab in the Department of Biomedical Informatics is part of a vibrant community of scientists, physicians, and engineers whose goal is to advance the boundaries of knowledge. The Department has recently been formed at Harvard Medical School to lead development of computational and informatics techniques to address pertinent challenges in modern biological sciences and medicine. The Department’s faculty conduct research at the intersection of biomedicine and information sciences, including bioinformatics, functional genomics, translational medicine, and clinical knowledge management. Based on the Harvard Medical School Longwood Campus, it provides a rich scientific environment, with many seminar series and invited speakers of the highest caliber. Responsibilities The postdoctoral fellows will be responsible for developing novel methodologies and applications to facilitate visual analysis of massive heterogeneous biomedical data sets, including genomic and clinical data. While the focus of the positions is on the development of visualization approaches, the roles will also involve the integration of such tools with data analysis and data management tools. Other responsibilities include day-to-day project management, including coordination with collaborators and other team members, as well as the writing of manuscripts. Contribution to the grant writing efforts of the lab are expected. Basic Requirements Candidates must have a PhD degree in a quantitative field such as bioinformatics, computational biology, biomedical informatics, medical informatics, computer science or related fields and a track-record of publication in the top journals or conferences of their field. Hands-on experience with management, analysis, and visualization of biomedical data as well as experience in developing (web-based) interactive software tools are required for this position. Excellent programming skills and working knowledge of state-of-the-art software development techniques are essential. The candidates interested in these positions must be highly motivated, willing to learn and demonstrate initiative in assigned tasks. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are crucial. Additional Requirements Experience with Python, JavaScript, web application development and cloud computing are desirable. Previous research experience in areas such as epigenomics or cancer genomics will be beneficial. Terms The positions are available immediately and can be renewed annually. Associated partners: Ars Electronica, DAM, FACT, monochrom, Laboratory of Research in Art and Techno Science, transmediale, ZKM This new masters of arts program funded by the European Union is recognized as a European Master of Excellence. This distinction is based on offering high-quality learning opportunities for students in an emerging field and also signifies the importance of Media Arts for the cultural and educational future of Europe. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The objective of this joint master program is to provide education and training for future specialists in Media Arts Cultures and prepare them for emerging careers in the creative and cultural sectors, research and academia. Students from European or non-European countries will study as a group and in individually chosen modules on selected topics like Media Cultural Heritage, Archiving, Experience Design, Media Arts Theory, New Media Aesthetics, Curating & Arts Management, or Media Arts Futures. The language of instruction is English. As part of the program, students will complete an internship at one of the consortium's full or associated partners and complete a master's thesis supervised by lecturers from the partner universities. KLUSZCZYZSKI, Sean CUBITT, Wendy COONES and many others… www.mediaartscultures.eu Media Arts Cultures is a mobility program, enabling students to study across Europe and in Asia. During the two-year program, each student will spend three semesters in at least three universities, and choose among the EU partners for the final semester. After completing the program, students will receive a joint master degree in Media Arts Cultures from the universities they have attended. The program is 120 ECTS and allows graduates to further pursue a PhD within Europe or other international higher education regions. More than 13 of the best EU and non-EU candidates will be offered Erasmus+ fully-funded scholarships for the duration of the program.
