Grand ballroom *Title*: An Evolving Visual Language: Connecting General Audiences to Science through Data Visualization. Visualization of all types of data is a highly effective tool used by researchers to gain insight into natural phenomena and to communicate their findings. It is also an increasingly popular means of presenting large scientific datasets to the general public in informal educational settings such as museums and planetaria. Visualization has appeared in many forms and in many cultures throughout digital history and contributes to the evolving visual language of science. Dr. Donna Cox and the Advanced Visualization Laboratory team at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, University of Illinois, collaborate with science teams, writers, producers, educators, and media distribution professionals on content designed to engage a wide range of audiences. In the past 8 years alone, her collaborative educational and outreach projects have produced science narratives featuring data visualizations that have been viewed by more than 45 million people worldwide. Cox leads an NSF-funded project to create scientific visualizations and then test audiences’ understanding of the phenomenon that is being presented. Large-scale computational data present unique visualization challenges for producers of high-resolution, production-quality 3D IMAX movies; feature films; and museum fulldomes. In this keynote, Cox will provide a visual feast of major projects, including new digital fulldome museum shows and award-winning IMAX films. *Speaker Bio:* Professor Donna J. Cox, MFA, PhD, is the first named Michael Aiken Endowed Chair at the University of Illinois, where she directs the Advanced Visualization Laboratory, the eDream Institute, and the Culture and Society theme at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. Cox has been a leader in the field of scientific visualization for over 30 years. She coined the term ‘renaissance teams’ to describe interdisciplinary groups of experts who address difficult challenges in large-scale data scientific visualization. Cox and her collaborators have thrilled millions around the world with their stunning cinematic presentations of science for IMAX movies, feature films, PBS HD television, and large-screen digital museum shows. The Museum of Science and Industry selected Cox as one of 40 “Modern-Day Leonardos” featured in its Leonardo da Vinci: Man, Inventor, Genius exhibit. The winner of the contest will receive, among other prizes, a chance to see their work being applied to ACT's data analysis, product development, and/or marketing/promotional efforts. Contest Challenge: Perceived vs. Actual Student Interest The importance of selecting and pursuing a major or career that fits a student's interests and passions cannot be overstated. ACT's research has shown that over time, students tend to declare the same or similar majors in their first year of college as their indicated planned major. However, ACT also has data regarding students' measured-rather than self-reported-interests and has developed a "fit index" that can help accurately predict success based on their fit with selected or intended majors. VPG's contest challenge is to develop a visual representation of Interest Perceived vs. Actual data that helps to relate the complexities of how students' measured interests match with their indicated plans, declared majors, or their persistence into their sophomore year. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Which majors are most affected by the influx/outflux of students? * Which majors have had an increase or decrease in measured interest over time? * Which majors have experienced differences in follow-through of students over time? Selection Procedure All active IEEE VPG members<http://vgtc.org/content/vpg-members> who do not make a submission to the contest will be invited to participate in the first-round review. The top contest submissions from this first-round review will undergo a second round of reviews conducted by five distinguished IEEE VPG members representing different backgrounds, who will be chosen jointly by the VGTC and VPG chairs. The five-member selection committee will thoroughly review and assess the top contest submissions. The chair of the selection committee will submit his or her recommendation for best visualization to the IEEE VGTC chair by Friday, Oct 16, 2015. Contest Award Along with a certificate, VPG will give a check for $100 USD to the winner in each of the following categories: 1. Most practical 2. Most original 3. One or more surprise categories in areas determined by the committee after reviewing the submissions. Submissions will be considered in all categories and may win more than one award. Perhaps most importantly, winners in all categories will have a chance to see their work being applied to ACT's data analysis, product development, and/or marketing/promotional efforts. Submission Details The 2015 contest accepts only static visualizations in the form of an image. Although interaction is an important component of visualization approaches, much of the visualization literature tends to pay more attention to the graphical representation than to interaction. The goal of this work is to strengthen the interaction side of visualization. Based on a brief review of general aspects of interaction, we develop an interaction-oriented view on visualization. This view comprises five key aspects: the data, the tasks, the technology, the human, as well as the implementation. Picking up these aspects individually, we elaborate several interaction methods for visualization. We introduce a multi-threading architecture for efficient interactive exploration. We present interaction techniques for different types of data e.g., multivariate data, spatio-temporal data, graphs) and different visualization tasks (e.g., exploratory navigation, visual comparison, visual editing). With respect to technology, we illustrate approaches that utilize modern interaction modalities (e.g., touch, tangibles, proxemics) as well as classic ones. While the human is important throughout this work, we also consider automatic methods to assist the interactive part. In addition to solutions for individual problems, a major contribution of this work is the overarching view of interaction in visualization as a whole. This includes a critical discussion of interaction, the identification of links between the key aspects of interaction, and the formulation of research topics for future work with a focus on interaction. Call for Posters of IEEE LDAV with extended deadlines The 5th IEEE Symposium on Large Data Analysis and Visualization will be held in conjunction with IEEE Vis 2015 in Chicago, Illinois on October 25-26, 2015. Abstract submission deadline: August 24th, 2015 Call for Posters: We invite you to submit unpublished work to the IEEE LDAV 2015 Poster Program. The poster program is a venue designed to highlight ongoing research and late breaking topics that have produced promising preliminary results. In addition to the topics listed under Call for Papers, we also welcome submissions that showcase successful stories of applying visualization to large-scale data intensive applications. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the symposium attendees and solicit feedback. Interested authors should submit a two-page abstract that describes the underlying problem, the proposed method, and preliminary results. Accepted poster abstracts will be included in the symposium proceedings. The format of the abstract will be the same as the format used for the regular paper submission. Poster authors are encouraged, but not required, to include a draft or sketch of the poster layout and content in their submission. This would help reviewers and show that the poster format is used effectively. The draft poster should be in PDF format. The authors should indicate if the poster would be accompanied by an on-site demonstration and/or videos.
