Data analysts are often overwhelmed with the sheer number of possible node-link diagrams, scatterplots, treemaps or other representations to look at, while not having a clear notion of which one might reveal interesting patterns like clusters, outliers and other structures. We invite the submission of short and long papers from researchers and practitioners in Computer Vision, Pattern Recognition and Machine Learning to discuss and propose innovative ways to automatically detect patterns in artificial image representations of abstract data, mimicking the human visual system for guiding the Visual Analytic process. This special issue focuses on presenting the state-of-the-art visualization and visual analysis techniques that are developed for solving important problems in the multimedia domain. Visual analytics is an emerging research direction that focuses on data exploration and analysis with a seamless integration of interaction, visualization, and analysis (such as data mining and machine learning). By showing data and analysis results in context, a visualization can display rich evidences that support or against the analysis results, thus helping with data interpretation and results validation. The analysts can annotate on (e.g. label on) or adjust the results via interactive user interfaces and visualizations to supervise the underlying analysis procedure based on, for example, advanced active learning algorithms, producing more and more precise analysis and correct results gradually. The combination enables human-centric computational intelligence by effectively integrating human knowledge and expertise with powerful computational algorithms through the high-bandwidth visual processing channel and user interaction. Recent progress on visualization and visual analytics creates new opportunities for understanding and making sense of large-scale, dynamic, heterogeneous multimedia data through “analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces”. Existing studies of visual analytics have already produced some insightful results and findings, which demonstrates the success and effectiveness of visual analyticsfor dealing with the complex multimedia data. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '16) will be held on 24-26 September 2016, in Dallas, TX, USA, in the heart of the complex of over 600 major multinational technology corporations, with 47 non-stop flights to international destinations. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier, SCI indexed). In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed). 1. SCOPES AND TOPICS ==================== We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, or other media. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '16 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. It is expected that the workshop organizers will setup an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '16. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. The ICCS conferences evolved from a series of seven annual workshops on conceptual graphs, starting with an informal gathering hosted by John F. Sowa in 1986. Recently, graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) paradigms are getting more and more attention. The aim of the ICCS 2016 conference is to build upon its long standing expertise in graph-based KRR and focus on providing modelling, formal and application results of graph-based systems. ICCS 2016 will be co-located with FOIS 2016, held in Annecy, in the Polytech building at the campus of the University of Savoie. The conference welcomes contributions that address graph-based representation and reasoning paradigms (e.g. Bayesian Networks (BNs), Semantic Networks (SNs), RDF(S), Conceptual Graphs (CGs), Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), CP-Nets, GAI-Nets, Graph Databases, Diagrams, etc.) from a modelling, theoretical and application viewpoint: - Modelling results will investigate concrete real world needs for graph-based representation, how certain use cases are of interest to the graph community, how using graphs can bring added (business) value, what kind of graph representation is needed for a given case, etc. - Technical results will include fundamental graph theory based results for novel structures for representation, extensions of existing structures for added expressivity, conciseness, optimisation algorithms for reasoning, reasoning explanation, etc. - Papers reporting on application experience will be expected to demonstrate the benefits of the graph-based proposed solutions in the context of the use case studied with respect to other possible solutions. The community publishes in a diverse range of outlets, hence a single workshop provides a unique opportunity to share ideas and practice. The topic of the workshop includes established set representations like Euler/Venn diagrams and matrices as well as new formalisms, such as linear diagrams and line-sets. The workshop scope covers methods for laying out, reasoning with and evaluating set visualisations. As new notations come online, this workshop will provide a focal point for early-stage research alongside more advanced contributions, enabling a better understanding of how we visualize and reason about sets. Application areas for this research are broad and encompass many other disciplines, such as biosciences, business, and criminology. CFP: EuroVA 2016 EuroVA 2016 is the seventh international EuroVis workshop on Visual Analytics. It will take place June 6-7, 2016 in Groningen, the Netherlands. Visual Analytics has been defined as the science of analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. Analytical reasoning includes analysis of complex (massive, dynamic, ambiguous, conflicting, …) data and information for gaining understanding, building knowledge, solving complex problems, and making right decisions. Visual Analytics deals with problems that cannot (yet) be solved algorithmically and therefore essentially require human thinking supported by the power of computers. Visual Analytics aims at effective division of labour between humans and computers and their synergistic collaboration, in which each side can efficiently utilize its unique capability. Thus, Visual Analytics can be understood as the science of human-computer data analysis, knowledge building, and problem solving. It is an interdisciplinary science integrating techniques from visualization and computer graphics, statistics and mathematics, data management and knowledge representation, data analysis and machine learning, cognitive and perceptual sciences, and more. EuroVA 2016 is the best place to present and discuss ideas of new methods and theories, interesting applications, designs, and studies of the use of visual analytics methods and systems. The workshop will accept a range of paper types, including technique, system, application, evaluation and theory papers in the area of Visual Analytics.
