Two fixed-term postdoctoral researcher’s positions at the School of Information Sciences, University of Tampere The School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Tampere invites applications for two fixed-term full-time postdoctoral researcher’s positions for a period from 1 March 2016 to 28 February 2018. The research takes place in the project ”Novel methods for analysis of online consumer behavior (NAOMI)”, which is a collaboration between University of Tampere, Lappeenranta University of Technology, and industrial collaborator Aller Media. The postdoctoral researchers will develop new well-performing, computationally efficient, and scalable methods based on probabilistic modeling, data mining, and machine learning for data analysis, visualization, information retrieval, and prediction in big consumer behavior data. The main data sources are large structured data of online conversations and clickstream data of consumer behavior. The postdoctoral researchers will participate in all parts of the research process including idea development, methods development, data gathering, empirical testing, and publication in high-quality international venues. In position 1 the task of the postdoctoral researcher focuses more on developing, implementing, and testing novel methods of information retrieval and probabilistic modeling to learn from multiple sources. In position 2 the task of the postdoctoral researcher focuses more on developing, implementing, and testing novel computational and statistical methods of click analysis and user behavior modeling. Other tasks of research staff are governed by University of Tampere's regulations on human resources, Section 3. Required and Desired Qualities of the Applicant, and Contract Details: A person appointed as a postdoctoral researcher must hold an appropriate doctoral degree in a field related to the research tasks (such as statistics, computer science, visual analytics, or a related field) and must be able to pursue scientific research independently as well as have the instructional skills needed in the post. A strong track record of research and scientific publication in top venues is appreciated. Good programming skills are expected. The most likely languages to be utilized in the project are Python, and Matlab or R. Good written and spoken communication skills in English, Finnish, or both are desirable. The remuneration of the postdoctoral researcher post is based on level 5 of the job-related salary element for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish Universities. The basic salary will be supplemented with a performance increase based on the employee's individual performance. The positions carry a four-month trial period. It is also possible to start as a researcher if one has made good progress in PhD studies and has a sufficient track record. In this case the remuneration of the post is based on level 4 of the job-related salary element for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish Universities. Diagrams is the only conference series that provides a united forum for all areas that are concerned with the study of diagrams, including architecture, artificial intelligence, biology, cartography, cognitive science, computer science, education, graphic design, history of science, human-computer interaction, linguistics, logic, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, and software modelling. The conference attracts a large number of researchers from almost all these related fields, positioning Diagrams as the major international event in the area. Diagrams 2016 is the ninth conference in the bi-annual series that started in 2000. Diagrams 2016 will include presentations of refereed papers, posters, tutorials, workshop sessions, and a graduate symposium. We invite submissions that focus on any aspect of diagrams research, as follows: - long research papers (15 pages) - short research papers (7 pages) - posters (3 pages) - tutorial proposals (2 pages; see the conference web page for full details) - workshop proposals (2 pages; see the conference web page for full details) - graduate symposium submissions (3 pages; see the conference web page for full details) All submissions will be fully peer reviewed. Fully funded PhD Studentship in Big Data Analysis and Visualization Applications are invited for a fully funded Computer Science PhD studentship at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK, in the area of Big Data Analysis and Visualization (http://master.findaphd.com/search/ProjectDetails.aspx?PJID=61931, application deadline 15 Jan). About the project In this ‘Big Data’ era, the amount and complexity of data that are gathered are constantly increasing. The challenge of today lies in analysing and generating knowledge from it. Information Visualization and Data Mining utilize and develop computational and interactive visual methods to support understanding of patterns and gaining of insights from such data. It acts as a link between data and the human interpreter, and has become crucial for gaining insights from data. ‘Big Data’ challenges are relevant in a range of scientific and industrial domains. For example, biosciences and biomedicine are areas that in recent years have become increasingly data driven, with a growing interest in development of efficient visualization methods and analysis tools. Building on the supervisory team’s previous work in multivariate data visualization, data mining, biological visualization and bioinformatics, and guided by the interests of the candidate, this project will address some of the main challenges in biological data analysis, which will also be applicable in a range of other domains. Potential subjects of focus include: 1) Interactive analysis of very high dimensional data – developing techniques that address challenges arising with data sets including tens or hundreds of thousands of dimensions 2) Integrative analysis of heterogeneous data – developing techniques that address challenges in joint analysis of data of several types and from several sources 3) Visual analysis of uncertain and missing data – developing techniques for analysis of data quality 4) Visual analysis of complex networks, such as biological pathways – developing techniques that facilitate overview and interpretability of networks and interrelated data Within the project the candidate will design and implement interactive visualization methods. The project is thus suitable for a candidate with computer science background and, preferably, experience of visualization, data mining and/or HCI. However, the emotional states of users are rarely taken into account when developing interaction techniques and/or the visual representations themselves. In many application scenarios, it would be beneficial if emotional measurements could be visualized in order to raise user awareness of their own and others' emotional states as well as how these emotions influence their reasoning and decision making. Additionally, with the help of emotional data, certain visualization systems should be able to adapt to the users’ mental models, cognitive processes and emotional states in terms of interaction and visual representation in order to support the analysis and exploration process. Our goal is to foster this novel area of visualization that takes user affective states into consideration. The EmoVis 2016 workshop is co-located with the ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (ACM IUI 2016) and welcomes researchers, practitioners and experts from a variety of scientific domains, including visualization, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and multimedia. This workshop will act as a forum where people with diverse backgrounds can present design principles and introduce novel techniques for affect measurement and visualization. We invite submissions that explore user emotional states in context of interactive visualization.
