SIAT MSc., MA, and Ph.D. students develop and apply innovative multi-disciplinary research methods to explore the broader implications of advanced information and media technologies. Guided by these studies, they design new technology and media experiences that are responsive to individual, organizational, and societal values. SIAT’s infrastructure includes state-of-the-art teaching and research facilities at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus, combined with the capabilities of our many university collaborators and partner organizations in the public and private sectors. Information+ Interdisciplinary practices in information design and visualization The inaugural Information+ conference will bring together researchers and practitioners in information design and information visualization to discuss common questions and challenges in these rapidly changing fields. The analysts can annotate on (e.g. label on) or adjust the results via interactive user interfaces and visualizations to supervise the underlying analysis procedure based on, for example, advanced active learning algorithms, producing more and more precise analysis and correct results gradually. The combination enables human-centric computational intelligence by effectively integrating human knowledge and expertise with powerful computational algorithms through the high-bandwidth visual processing channel and user interaction. Recent progress on visualization and visual analytics creates new opportunities for understanding and making sense of large-scale, dynamic, heterogeneous multimedia data through “analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces”. Existing studies of visual analytics have already produced some insightful results and findings, which demonstrates the success and effectiveness of visual analyticsfor dealing with the complex multimedia data. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '16 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. The ICCS conferences evolved from a series of seven annual workshops on conceptual graphs, starting with an informal gathering hosted by John F. Sowa in 1986. Recently, graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) paradigms are getting more and more attention. The aim of the ICCS 2016 conference is to build upon its long standing expertise in graph-based KRR and focus on providing modelling, formal and application results of graph-based systems. ICCS 2016 will be co-located with FOIS 2016, held in Annecy, in the Polytech building at the campus of the University of Savoie. The conference welcomes contributions that address graph-based representation and reasoning paradigms (e.g. Bayesian Networks (BNs), Semantic Networks (SNs), RDF(S), Conceptual Graphs (CGs), Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), CP-Nets, GAI-Nets, Graph Databases, Diagrams, etc.) from a modelling, theoretical and application viewpoint: - Modelling results will investigate concrete real world needs for graph-based representation, how certain use cases are of interest to the graph community, how using graphs can bring added (business) value, what kind of graph representation is needed for a given case, etc. - Technical results will include fundamental graph theory based results for novel structures for representation, extensions of existing structures for added expressivity, conciseness, optimisation algorithms for reasoning, reasoning explanation, etc. - Papers reporting on application experience will be expected to demonstrate the benefits of the graph-based proposed solutions in the context of the use case studied with respect to other possible solutions.
