2nd Biennial BPViz: Broadening Participation in Visualization Workshop, August 3 - 4, 2016

The 2016 CRA-W/CDC CADENS Broadening Participation in Visualization (BPViz'16) Workshop will be held August 3-4, 2016. The workshop will be co-located at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The goal of the workshop is to cross boundaries between STEM and non-STEM domains of scientists with data visualization needs, to facilitate collaborations and broaden participation in visualization on all levels in academia, research and industry. Sponsored by Computing Research Association -Women (CRA-W), The Coalition to Diversity Computing (CDC), and the National Science Foundation (NSF), BPViz is designed to bring together persons with an interest in visualization to: (1) present work-in-progress, (2) engage with others in the field, (3) obtain feedback from visualization experts, (4) discuss research and career interests, and (4) build a community of persons interested in broadening participation and inclusion across all domains where data visualization drives analysis and discovery. The workshop will include presentations on a variety of visualization topics, plenary speakers from academia, industry and research in the visualization field and much more. We have taken into account feedback from the 1st CRA-W/CDC BPViz Workshop participants in 2014, and we are changing the format a bit to include hands-on visualization workshops with various visualization tools and a trip to The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. BPViz'16 Workshop is an ideal opportunity to engage with others with interests in visualization, get hands-on experience with commonly used visualization tools, and network with visualization domain scientists. It is designed to inform, inspire and encourage participants to engage in the multidisciplinary dynamics of visualization. Who should apply: All persons with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply (this includes, but is not limited to): undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, faculty, research faculty and staff. All academic majors and research interests with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply. Women and members of underrepresented groups and underrepresented academic domains are also encouraged to apply. Travel expenses (flight or mileage), meals and lodging costs will be provided for a limited number of workshop participants. Persons who would like to be considered for travel support should indicate so when applying. We are regrettably restricted to reimbursing/providing travel support to only U.S. Citizens. We recognize this is a serious constraint, but it is a federal regulation on the funding. Persons with their own travel funds wishing to participate in the workshop are also encouraged to apply. The post is on researching Interactive Visualisation methods for Supporting Decision-Making in Diverse Cyber-Security Systems. Dear InfoVis scholars, The UQ Node of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language will be hosting the AVML2016 conference this coming September. The conference is a great way for scholars from diverse fields to meet and discuss the visualisation of many forms of language and communication data including medical imaging, word clouds, concept maps, language trees, spectrograms, amongst others. If your research involves visual modelling, analysis and/or exploration of any aspect of language or communication data the AVML2016 conference is a great way to showcase and discuss this work with a diverse range of experts. Advances in Visual Methods for Linguistics 2016 (AVML2016) Call for papers Linguistics, like other scientific disciplines, is centrally reliant upon visual images for the elicitation, analysis and presentation of data. It is difficult to imagine how linguistics could have developed, and how it could be done today, without visual representations such as syntactic trees, psychophysical models, vocal tract diagrams, dialect maps, or spectrograms. With the emergence of new visualisation methods and technologies there is a renewed interest in the application of these techniques to the study of language. In 2012, the University of York hosted the first AVML meeting, addressing a need within the academic community for a forum dedicated to sharing work in this emergent interdisciplinary space. After the success of this first meeting, The University of Tübingen then hosted AVML2014. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '16 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. It is expected that the workshop organizers will setup an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '16. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. 2nd Biennial BPViz: Broadening Participation in Visualization Workshop, August 3 - 4, 2016

The 2016 CRA-W/CDC CADENS Broadening Participation in Visualization (BPViz'16) Workshop will be held August 3-4, 2016. The workshop will be co-located at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The goal of the workshop is to cross boundaries between STEM and non-STEM domains of scientists with data visualization needs, to facilitate collaborations and broaden participation in visualization on all levels in academia, research and industry. Sponsored by Computing Research Association -Women (CRA-W), The Coalition to Diversity Computing (CDC), and the National Science Foundation (NSF), BPViz is designed to bring together persons with an interest in visualization to: (1) present work-in-progress, (2) engage with others in the field, (3) obtain feedback from visualization experts, (4) discuss research and career interests, and (4) build a community of persons interested in broadening participation and inclusion across all domains where data visualization drives analysis and discovery. The workshop will include presentations on a variety of visualization topics, plenary speakers from academia, industry and research in the visualization field and much more. We have taken into account feedback from the 1st CRA-W/CDC BPViz Workshop participants in 2014, and we are changing the format a bit to include hands-on visualization workshops with various visualization tools and a trip to The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. BPViz'16 Workshop is an ideal opportunity to engage with others with interests in visualization, get hands-on experience with commonly used visualization tools, and network with visualization domain scientists. It is designed to inform, inspire and encourage participants to engage in the multidisciplinary dynamics of visualization. Who should apply: All persons with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply (this includes, but is not limited to): undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, faculty, research faculty and staff. All academic majors and research interests with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply. Women and members of underrepresented groups and underrepresented academic domains are also encouraged to apply. Travel expenses (flight or mileage), meals and lodging costs will be provided for a limited number of workshop participants. Persons who would like to be considered for travel support should indicate so when applying. We are regrettably restricted to reimbursing/providing travel support to only U.S. Citizens. We recognize this is a serious constraint, but it is a federal regulation on the funding. Persons with their own travel funds wishing to participate in the workshop are also encouraged to apply.
