CALL FOR PAPERS =============== The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI 2016) (vinci-conf.org) Dallas, Texas, USA, 24-26 September 2016 ======================================== Visual communication through graphical or sign languages has long been conducted among human beings of different backgrounds or cultures, and in recent decades between human and machine. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '16) will be held on 24-26 September 2016, in Dallas, TX, USA, in the heart of the complex of over 600 major multinational technology corporations, with 47 non-stop flights to international destinations. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier, SCI indexed). In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed). 1. SCOPES AND TOPICS ==================== We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, or other media. Research papers may address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: = Cognitive aspects of visual information comprehension = Empirical studies of novel visual metaphors = Visual interaction through multimodality = Visual approaches for knowledge discovery = Computational aesthetics = Visual analytics = Graph drawing and (multivariate) network visualization = Information visualization = Graphical user interface design = Aesthetics in visual communication = Influence of visual arts and design = Visual modeling languages and UML = Visual communication metaphors = Visual programming languages = Visualization on mobile devices = Applications like SoftVis, BioVis, GeoVis, ... = Sketching = Human-computer interaction 2. PAPER SUBMISSION =================== Submissions that address research and development, as well as experience reports and tool demonstrations on the above and other related topics are strongly encouraged. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. Each submitted symposium paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three International Program Committee members. All accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings of VINCI’2016 published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Moreover, authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to prepare revised versions of their work for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier; SCI indexed). In addition, it is planned that revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for the subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press; AHCI indexed). Research papers and experience reports of up to eight (8), short papers of up to four (4), and tool demonstrations or posters of up to two (2) ACM double-column pages should be submitted through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2016. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '16 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. It is expected that the workshop organizers will setup an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '16. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. Detailed information on the submission of special sessions and panel proposals can be found on the conference web page. Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI '16 EasyChair submission system (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2016) The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI '16 conference proceedings as well. The symposium chairs reserve the right to move accepted papers for a special session into a regular session in case the special session has finally less than four papers. In this case, the special session will be cancelled. 5. Graph Drawing andNetwork Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial tovisually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of suchapplication areas include data science, social sciences, Web computing,information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, informationsecurity and software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for more than 20 years. Itsfocus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing as well asthe design of network visualization systems and interfaces. GD 2016 will behosted by the Institute of Communications and Computer Systems, an affiliate ofthe National Technical University of Athens from September 19 to 21, 2016 inAthens, Greece. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspect of graphdrawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and postersand to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. PAPERS------ We invite authors to submit papers describing original research of theoreticalor practical significance to graph drawing and network visualization. Regularpapers must be submitted explicitly to one of two distinct tracks. Paperssubmitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the othertrack. Track 1: Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects---------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to fundamental graph drawing advances, such ascombinatorial aspects and algorithm design. The range of topics for this trackincludes (but is not limited to): • Design and analysis of graph drawing algorithms • Geometric graph theory• Geometric computing• Planarity and topological graph theory• Optimization on graphs Track 2: Experimental, applied, and network visualization aspects----------------------------------------------------------------- This track is mainly devoted to the practical aspects of graph drawing, such asthe development of network visualization systems and interfaces in differentapplication areas. In this category it will be possible to submittheoretical contributions and applied papers of shorter length. Papers in thiscategory will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. Demos----- Authors of applied regular and short papers will have the opportunity to show ademo of their software/system during the poster session. Submission format----------------- All submissions must be formatted using the LaTeX style file for the conferenceseries Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) provided by Springer. Thedefault margins and fonts must not be modified. Submissions that do not complywith this format risk being rejected. The length of regular papers is limitedto 12 pages (excluding references), while the length of short papers is limitedto 6 pages (excluding references). The claims of the paper should be fullysubstantiated, including full proofs or appropriate experimental data. If thisinformation does not fit within the page limits, the authors should include itin a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which thereviewers may read at their own discretion. POSTERS------- Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and relatedareas are also solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for thecommunication of late-breaking research results (which may also appearelsewhere) to the graph drawing community. Authors of posters should prepare anabstract (up to two pages in the LNCS style) that must be submitted togetherwith the poster itself. CONTEST------- Details about the traditional Graph Drawing Contest held at the conference willbe provided on the conference Web site. PUBLICATION----------- All accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings, published bySpringer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series and, followinga green open access policy, as a conference index on the arXiv repository. TheLNCS proceedings will be made freely accessible to the GD community uponpublication and openly accessible to anyone after four years. The self-archivedarXiv proceedings will provide immediate and unrestricted open access. Twelvepages (excluding references) will be allocated for regular papers and six pages(excluding references) for short papers. Upon submission of the camera-readyversion of accepted papers, the identical paper (optionally including a clearlymarked appendix) must be submitted to the arXiv repository and its arXividentifier must be specified for inclusion in the conference index. 2016 New York Scientific Data Summit (NYSDS) The New York Scientific Data Summit (NYSDS) aims to accelerate data-driven discovery and innovation by bringing together researchers, developers and end-users from academia, industry, utilities and state and federal governments. CALL FOR PAPERS =============== The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI 2016) (vinci-conf.org) Dallas, Texas, USA, 24-26 September 2016 ======================================== Visual communication through graphical or sign languages has long been conducted among human beings of different backgrounds or cultures, and in recent decades between human and machine. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '16) will be held on 24-26 September 2016, in Dallas, TX, USA, in the heart of the complex of over 600 major multinational technology corporations, with 47 non-stop flights to international destinations. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier, SCI indexed). WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '16 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. It is expected that the workshop organizers will setup an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '16. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. Detailed information on the submission of special sessions and panel proposals can be found on the conference web page. Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI '16 EasyChair submission system (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2016) The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI '16 conference proceedings as well. BioVis at ISMB 2016 Call for Participation

The BioVis Interest Group (http://www.biovis.net) is organizing a meeting at *ISMB in 2016*. This meeting brings together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in problems in biological data visualization, as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. *BioVis@ISMB 2016* is co-located with ISMB 2016 <http://www.iscb.org/ismb2016> and will be taking place on July 8 in Orlando, Florida at the Disney World Resort Swan and Dolphin hotel <http://www.iscb.org/ismb2016-accommodation>. The main ISMB 2016 conference will run from July 8 through July 12. There are three possible ways to participate in *BioVis@ISMB*: 1. New Research: Participants are invited to submit an abstract describing high-quality original research. Abstracts will be reviewed by the program committee and all accepted abstracts will be included in the poster session. The authors of selected abstracts will be asked to give a brief oral presentation during the SIG meeting. 2. Highlights: Participants may submit an abstract describing work published in the previous year as well as additional work undertaken since publication. The program committee will review these abstracts. Additionally, the BioVis SIG program committee may also invite authors of outstanding publications from other venues. The authors of selected abstracts will give an oral presentation during the SIG meeting. 3. The 13th International Conference on Cooperative Design, Visualization and Engineering -CDVE2016 will be held on Oct. 24 - 27, 2016, in the beautiful city Sydney, Australia Your paper should dress one of the major topics in the call for paper themes. Our conference is focused on the "cooperative", "concurrent", "integration" aspects of the design, visualization, engineering and any other applications that these main aspects are emphasized. The paper should be original and has not been submitted to other conferences and journals. You do not have to submit an abstract to submit a full paper.
