The Vizzies competition aims to recognize some of the most illustrative and impactful visualizations from the worlds of science and engineering. The 13th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Baltimore, MD, USA in conjunction with IEEE VIS. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, practical experience, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Vulnerability management - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics and education - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security When applicable, visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts and/or allow analysts to collaborate efficiently are particularly desirable. *** New for 2016! *** Case Studies ---------------------------------- Short papers describing practical applications of security visualization are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact - Lessons learned from operational engagements - Insights gained from the transition process Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Posters ------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the attendees and solicit feedback. Submissions ----------- Submissions must be formated using the IEEE VGTC template that can be found at http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html. All submissions should be in PDF format. Submit papers and poster abstracts using EasyChair: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vizsec2016 Papers should be at most 8 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee. Committee members are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. The VizSec proceedings will be published by IEEE. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference. Case Studies Case studies should be at most 4 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Case study submissions will be reviewed by the Paper Chair(s) and other members of the organizing committee to determine relevance to the VizSec community. Accepted case study authors will have time to present their work at VizSec during the program. Accepted case studies will be made available on this website. Extended abstract for posters should be at most 2 pages including the bibliography. Poster abstracts will be reviewed by the Poster Chair(s) and other members of the organizing committee to determine relevance to the VizSec community. Accepted authors must present a corresponding poster during the workshop. The poster authors can determine the layout by themselves, but the dimensions of the posters should not exceed the A0 space (841mm x 1189mm or 33.1" x 46.8"). Additionally, poster authors are requested to give a brief oral preview during a plenary "fast forward" session. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. When applicable, submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are considered particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VAST Challenge data sets. Call for Participation (CFP) The IEEE VGTC VPG International Data-Visualization Contest 2016 http://vacommunity.org/ieeevpg/viscontest/2016/ Contest Theme: Spatio-temporal Visual Analytics Collaborator and Support: ACT, Inc. DEADLINE: Wednesday, August 31, 2016 The IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC) is sponsoring its third International Data Visualization Contest to recognize outstanding design in visualization and visual analytics from around the world. The 2016 contest theme is "Spatio-temporal Visual Analytics." The contest will be administered by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC and in collaboration with ACT, Inc. (ACT is a non-profit organization in the education readiness assessment sector.) The awards will be announced at the IEEE VPG Reception to be held at the IEEE VIS 2016 conference. You are not required to attend either the VIS 2016 conference or the VPG reception to participate in the contest. Contest Challenge: Spatio-temporal Visual Analytics ACT operates nearly 9,000 testing centers annually to deliver The ACT Assessment to over two million high school students on six different Saturdays each year as part of its open, "National" program. Use of the test data by schools and government agencies has grown significantly in recent years. This growth is increasing the demands on the ACT network and test seat availability. Thus, ACT seeks to use data to carefully mange its system and its operating costs. The 2016 challenge is to develop a visual representation of how changes in availability of an ACT product (i.e., an assessment test) in a geographic area or as part of a distribution network can affect nearby or adjacent distribution sites by moving students or assessments, changing dates, or some other strategy. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * How does the introduction of a new delivery location affect existing delivery? * How does the addition or subtraction of a distribution site affect demand in neighboring sites? * How do proximity and availability affect participation in the assessment by geographic region? * What is the optimal Test Center Network for each season by geographic region? * What geographic areas are at risk of under or over utilization? * How can derived measures like Market Saturation, Percent Utilization, and Cost per Unit be aggregated and visualized at local, regional and national levels? Eligibility All visualization and visual analytics designers, developers, researchers, and practitioners from business, academia, and government sectors around the world are eligible to participate. Submissions cannot promote a commercial product. Submission Limitation Contestants may be lead author on no more than three submissions to the 2016 contest. They may be a co-author of any number of submissions. Submission Deadline Contest packets must be received by 5 p.m. PDT on Wednesday, August 31, 2016 to qualify for the 2016 contest. Selection Procedure Five distinguished IEEE VPG members chosen jointly by the VGTC and VPC chairs will review the contest submissions thoroughly and assess the top contest winners. The chair of the selection committee will submit the committee's recommendation to the IEEE VGTC chair by Friday, Oct 14, 2016. Contest Award IEEE VGTC will award a certificate to the best submission in each of the following five categories: 1. Overall Excellence 2. Originality 3. Appropriateness 4. Understandability 5. Communication Impact Submissions will be considered in all categories and may win more than one award. Winners in all categories may have a chance to see their visualization work: 1. Being applied to ACT's data analysis, product development, and/or marketing/promotional efforts 2. Appear on a cover of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) in 2017. IEEE CG&A will make the final determination about publishing. Submission Details The 2016 contest accepts only static visualizations in the form of an image. Contest participants should email the submission package to ieeevpg(a)googlegroups.com. The package must include: 1. A pdf file that contains: a. Title of the data-visualization contest submission b. Name, affiliation, email address, and postal address of the participant c. A maximum of 300 word description of the visualization written in English 2. KEYNOTES =========== Keynote Speech 1: TITLE: Beyond the Two Cultures: A Crisis in Representation Prof. Malina Roger (The University of Texas at Dallas, USA) Abstract: As an astrophysicist, I have spent my career bathing in astronomical data, the data world is as real to me as the sensory physical world. Yet we are still in the stone age of representing digital data in forms that we can understand and feel. Three years ago I started the UT Dallas ArtSciLab where artists and scientists work side by side making trouble with data. I will present our work with neuroscientists, astronomers and geoscientists and also talk about the new born digital hybrids whose existence gives the lie to the very concept of C P Snow’s Two Cultures. Short Bio: Malina is a space scientist and astronomer, an art-science researcher, Arts and Technology Distinguished Chair Professor, and Professor of Physics, at UT Dallas. He obtained his B.S. in physics from MIT in 1972, and his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1979. Founded the ArtSciLab which hosts projects which involve collaboration between artists and scientists, resulting in art works, scientific data exploration tools, and public engagement activities involving the integration of the arts, design and humanities in science, technology, education and mathematics (STEAM). Malina is an elected member of the International Academy of Astronautics. "Laser d’or" Prize, from the International Video Art Organization. Keynote Speech 2: TITLE: Visual Analytics and the VAST Challenges: this year’s Challenge and a retrospective look at an influential international competition Prof. Georges Grinstein (University of Massachusetts Lowell, USA) Abstract: The VAST Challenges are a decade old and have had large international participation. The challenge data sets are mostly synthetic with embedded ground truth and participants are asked stop solve a particular problem, which in many cases involves discovering that ground truth, which in turns makes it easier to objectively evaluate submissions. But submissions are also evaluated several other ways. I will discuss several key problems in Visual Analytics, provide examples of how the VAST Challenges were developed as an attack on these problems, and show award winning solutions. I will also discuss the importance of open source tools in solving these problems. Short Bio: Georges Grinstein is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, was head of its Bioinformatics Program, Director of its Institute for Visualization and Perception Research, and is now Chief Scientific Officer of Weave Visual Analytics. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester in 1978. His work is broad and interdisciplinary, covering the perceptual and cognitive foundations of visualization, very high-dimensional data visualization, visual analytics and applications. The emphasis is on the modeling, visualization, and analysis of complex information data and systems. He has over 40 years in academia with extensive consulting, over 300 research grants, products in use nationally and internationally, several patents, numerous publications in journals and conferences, a book on interactive data visualization, founded several companies, been the organizer or chair of national and international conferences and workshops in Computer Graphics, in Visualization, and in Data Mining. He has given numerous keynotes and mentored over 40 doctoral students and hundreds of graduate students. He has been on the editorial boards of several journals in Computer Graphics and Data Mining, a member of ANSI and ISO, a NATO Expert, and a technology consultant for various government agencies and commercial organizations. For the last ten years he has co-chaired the IEEE VAST Challenges in visual analytics leading to new research areas. He has developed and taught new courses, one of which Radical Design focused on how to develop radical new products instead of evolutionary ones. He is a member of the Department of Homeland Security’s Center of Excellence CCICADA (Command, Control and Interoperability Center for Advanced Data Analysis), and directs the development of Weave, an open source web-based interactive collaborative visual analytics system incorporating numerous innovations. 2. PANEL ========Facilitating Visualization Capacity Building Organizers: Vetria L. Byrd (Purdue University) and Joseph A. As a tool, visualization is often times utilized as a light in a sea of data providing insight to large, complex datasets. The scientific community and society at large are the beneficiaries of the utility visualization brings. As more and more data is created and consumed persons with knowledge of the visualization process, applications, methods and techniques will continue to be in demand in all fields with data visualization needs. When we characterize data streams we see features such as differing volumes, differing velocities (data delivered over unit time periods), multiple data types in a stream, multiple streams that are related but unintegrated, streams with data gaps, and streams with data whose content or context changes over time. Current visualization tools and techniques are often anchored to static repositories. Yet streams are dynamic, which means that the way data is input, manipulated, visualized, analyzed and iterated over must change from our usual approaches. Submissions may present concepts, state of the art research, standards, implementations, running experiments, applications, or industrial case studies. The 13th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Baltimore, MD, USA in conjunction with IEEE VIS. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, practical experience, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Vulnerability management - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics and education - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security When applicable, visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts and/or allow analysts to collaborate efficiently are particularly desirable. *** New for 2016! *** Case Studies ---------------------------------- Short papers describing practical applications of security visualization are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact - Lessons learned from operational engagements - Insights gained from the transition process Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Posters ------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the attendees and solicit feedback. Submissions ----------- Submissions must be formated using the IEEE VGTC template that can be found at http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html. All submissions should be in PDF format. Submit papers and poster abstracts using EasyChair: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vizsec2016 Papers should be at most 8 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee. Committee members are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. The VizSec proceedings will be published by IEEE. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference. Case Studies Case studies should be at most 4 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Case study submissions will be reviewed by the Paper Chair(s) and other members of the organizing committee to determine relevance to the VizSec community. Accepted case study authors will have time to present their work at VizSec during the program. Accepted case studies will be made available on this website. Extended abstract for posters should be at most 2 pages including the bibliography. Poster abstracts will be reviewed by the Poster Chair(s) and other members of the organizing committee to determine relevance to the VizSec community. Accepted authors must present a corresponding poster during the workshop. The poster authors can determine the layout by themselves, but the dimensions of the posters should not exceed the A0 space (841mm x 1189mm or 33.1" x 46.8"). Additionally, poster authors are requested to give a brief oral preview during a plenary "fast forward" session. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. When applicable, submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are considered particularly desirable. If possible, making the data used for the tests available will also be considered positively. If you do not have real-world data to demonstrate your visualization, you may be interested in looking at the VAST Challenge data sets. Visual Analytics is the enabling science for effective exploration of big data through meaningful visualisations and interactive user interfaces. Understanding the multidisciplinary nature, including user querying, powerful analytics, machine learning, visualisation, human-computer interaction, perception and cognition, is critical for Visual Analytics to be effectively deployed. ---- BDVA16 ---- The symposium will be held in Sydney, Australia, at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) North Ryde site.
