CALL FOR PAPERS =============== The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI 2016) (vinci-conf.org) Dallas, Texas, USA, 24-26 September 2016 ======================================== Visual communication through graphical or sign languages has long been conducted among human beings of different backgrounds or cultures, and in recent decades between human and machine. In today's digital world, visual information is typically encoded with various metaphors commonly used in daily life to facilitate rapid comprehension and easy analysis during the communication process. Visual information communication generally encompasses information visualization, graphical user-interfaces, visual analytics, and visual languages. Visual information is increasingly being used to facilitate human-human communication through the Internet and mobile devices. The Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI) (vinci-conf.org) is the premier international forum for researchers and industrial practitioners to discuss the state-of-the-art in visual communication theories, designs, and applications. The 9th International Symposium on Visual Information Communication and Interaction (VINCI '16) will be held on 24-26 September 2016, in Dallas, TX, USA, in the heart of the complex of over 600 major multinational technology corporations, with 47 non-stop flights to international destinations. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. All accepted papers will be published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to submit revised versions of their works to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier, SCI indexed). In addition, revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press, AHCI indexed). 1. SCOPES AND TOPICS ==================== We solicit original, unpublished research papers that focus on all aspects of visual information communication and interaction, either via images, computer graphics, animations, virtual reality, web, or other media. Research papers may address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: = Cognitive aspects of visual information comprehension = Empirical studies of novel visual metaphors = Visual interaction through multimodality = Visual approaches for knowledge discovery = Computational aesthetics = Visual analytics = Graph drawing and (multivariate) network visualization = Information visualization = Graphical user interface design = Aesthetics in visual communication = Influence of visual arts and design = Visual modeling languages and UML = Visual communication metaphors = Visual programming languages = Visualization on mobile devices = Applications like SoftVis, BioVis, GeoVis, ... = Sketching = Human-computer interaction 2. PAPER SUBMISSION =================== Submissions that address research and development, as well as experience reports and tool demonstrations on the above and other related topics are strongly encouraged. Papers can be submitted as full papers, short papers and posters. Each submitted symposium paper will be peer-reviewed by at least three International Program Committee members. All accepted papers and posters will appear in the proceedings of VINCI’2016 published by ACM Press and made available in the ACM Digital Library (EI indexed). Moreover, authors of a number of selected full papers of high quality will be invited to prepare revised versions of their work for submission to a special issue of the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing (Elsevier; SCI indexed). In addition, it is planned that revised versions of selected best papers in art and design will be invited for the subsequent publication in a special issue of Leonardo (MIT Press; AHCI indexed). Research papers and experience reports of up to ten (10), short papers of up to four (4), and tool demonstrations or posters of up to two (2) ACM double-column pages should be submitted through https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2016. WORKSHOPS AND TUTORIALS ========================== VINCI '16 is also soliciting proposals for full-day or half-day workshops and tutorials on topics that address areas of interest to the community. Proposals should not be longer than a maximum of 2 pages. In particular, workshop proposals should include: 1) The title and a brief description of the specific issues that the workshop will address, the reasons why the workshop is of interest in these times, and the main research areas involved. 2) Contact information of the workshop chairs, their competence in the proposed topic(s) and previous experience in chairing scientific events. 3) A tentative list of program committee members. 4) Intended length (half or full day) and a draft of the Call for Papers. It is expected that the workshop organizers will setup an own workshop web page as soon as the workshop proposal has been accepted. Tutorials usually attract a broad range of audiences, including professionals, researchers, students, or practitioners, who wish to enhance their knowledge in the specific tutorial topic. Tutorials offer a unique opportunity to disseminate in-depth information on specific topics in visual information communication and interaction. Tutorial proposals should include short biographies of the proposers, a draft of the tutorial content, intended length, and evidence of the possibility of attracting audience to the tutorial. It is possible to extend the symposium by one day in case many workshops or tutorials are proposed and accepted. SPECIAL SESSIONS AND PANELS ============================== We also invite special session and panel proposals for VINCI '16. Proposals for special sessions and panels should include the title, aim and scope, the names and affiliations of the organizers together with a short biography. A list of potential contributors or panel members would be surely helpful too. The proposers are expected to have a good publication track record and excellent standing in the proposed area. Detailed information on the submission of special sessions and panel proposals can be found on the conference web page. Papers submitted to special sessions should be done through the VINCI '16 EasyChair submission system (https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vinci2016) The paper types are identical to those of regular submissions. It is the responsibility of the special session organizers to make sure that papers submitted to their special session clearly indicate the name of the special session the paper belongs to. All papers submitted to special sessions will be subject to the same peer-review procedure as the regular papers (however chaired by the special session organizers) and will appear in the VINCI '16 conference proceedings as well. The symposium chairs reserve the right to move accepted papers for a special session into a regular session in case the special session has finally less than four papers. 2nd Biennial BPViz: Broadening Participation in Visualization Workshop, August 3 - 4, 2016

The 2016 CRA-W/CDC CADENS Broadening Participation in Visualization (BPViz'16) Workshop will be held August 3-4, 2016. The workshop will be co-located at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana and The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The goal of the workshop is to cross boundaries between STEM and non-STEM domains of scientists with data visualization needs, to facilitate collaborations and broaden participation in visualization on all levels in academia, research and industry. Sponsored by Computing Research Association -Women (CRA-W), The Coalition to Diversity Computing (CDC), and the National Science Foundation (NSF), BPViz is designed to bring together persons with an interest in visualization to: (1) present work-in-progress, (2) engage with others in the field, (3) obtain feedback from visualization experts, (4) discuss research and career interests, and (4) build a community of persons interested in broadening participation and inclusion across all domains where data visualization drives analysis and discovery. The workshop will include presentations on a variety of visualization topics, plenary speakers from academia, industry and research in the visualization field and much more. We have taken into account feedback from the 1st CRA-W/CDC BPViz Workshop participants in 2014, and we are changing the format a bit to include hands-on visualization workshops with various visualization tools and a trip to The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. BPViz'16 Workshop is an ideal opportunity to engage with others with interests in visualization, get hands-on experience with commonly used visualization tools, and network with visualization domain scientists. It is designed to inform, inspire and encourage participants to engage in the multidisciplinary dynamics of visualization. Who should apply: All persons with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply (this includes, but is not limited to): undergraduates, graduate students, post-docs, faculty, research faculty and staff. All academic majors and research interests with an interest in visualization are encouraged to apply. Women and members of underrepresented groups and underrepresented academic domains are also encouraged to apply. Travel expenses (flight or mileage), meals and lodging costs will be provided for a limited number of workshop participants. Persons who would like to be considered for travel support should indicate so when applying. We are regrettably restricted to reimbursing/providing travel support to only U.S. Citizens. A one-year postdoc position is available at INRIA Saclay, France (near Paris). The candidate will join the ILDA team [1] and contribute to project MapMuxing, which is about the design, implementation and evaluation of novel, interactive geovisualization techniques that help users combine and make sense of multiple, heterogeneous representations of geographical areas such as, e.g., topographic maps, ortho-images, live geolocation feeds, geophysical phenomenon simulations such as tsunamis. This is a joint project with IGN, the French national mapping institute [2]. Within this general context, the candidate is welcome to develop his/her own research directions, and will have the opportunity to design novel techniques for either workstations, ultra-high-resolution wall displays, or both. Applicants must have a PhD in Computer Science and be interested in interactive cartography and geovisualization. Expertise in Human-Computer Interaction / Information Visualization is required. Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems is a plus, but is not mandatory. The position is for 12 months. Starting date is flexible, before March 2017. Visual analytics is an emerging research direction that focuses on data exploration and analysis with a seamless integration of interaction, visualization, and analysis (such as data mining and machine learning). By showing data and analysis results in context, a visualization can display rich evidences that support or against the analysis results, thus helping with data interpretation and results validation. The analysts can annotate on (e.g. label on) or adjust the results via interactive user interfaces and visualizations to supervise the underlying analysis procedure based on, for example, advanced active learning algorithms, producing more and more precise analysis and correct results gradually. The combination enables human-centric computational intelligence by effectively integrating human knowledge and expertise with powerful computational algorithms through the high-bandwidth visual processing channel and user interaction. Recent progress on visualization and visual analytics creates new opportunities for understanding and making sense of large-scale, dynamic, heterogeneous multimedia data through “analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces”. Existing studies of visual analytics have already produced some insightful results and findings, which demonstrates the success and effectiveness of visual analyticsfor dealing with the complex multimedia data. BioVis 2016 is the 6th Meeting on Biological Data Visualization, an interdisciplinary event covering all aspects of visualization in biology. The meeting brings together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in problems in biological data visualization, as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. It is hosted as a one-day single-track event at VIS (http://ieeevis.org) and a SIG half-day meeting at ISMB (https://www.iscb.org/ismb2016) We invite submissions of original research, poster submissions, as well as submissions for data visualization and redesign contests. We invite contributions on all aspects of data visualization in biology, from molecular to cell, tissue, organism and population biology. Paper and Contest submissions can only be submitted to the BioVis meeting at VIS. All accepted abstracts for the conference will be linked on the BioVis website (http://www.biovis.net) All abstracts accepted into the conference will be considered for publication, once extended into papers, in the thematic series on Biological Data Visualization of BMC Bioinformatics (impact factor 2.6), as part of a two-round review process. We are currently working with IEEE on confirming the publishing model as described in this Call for Participation, i.e., an open access publication with BMC Bioinformatics. Should this model not be realized, the manuscripts will be indexed under IEEE. All accepted poster submissions will be made available on the BioVis website. Data Analysis and Design Contest entries that are accepted, and deemed to make a significant contribution to the field, will be invited to submit full manuscripts for inclusion in the BMC Bioinformatics journal. *Submission Guidelines:* Authors are required to submit a 1-page abstract for the conference due Apr 29th, and an extended, full BMC paper due May 6th. IVDA applies in broad range of situations where human expertise must be brought to bear on problems characterized by massive datasets and data that are uncertain in fact, relevance, location in space and position in time. Current applications include environmental science and technologies, natural resources and energy, health and related life sciences, precision medicine, safety and security and business processes. We also encourage submissions that extend the areas of use to new analytic tasks in science and technology, public health, business intelligence, financial analysis, and other domains. Submissions may include studies of visual analytics and decision support in the context of an organization (e.g., communication between analysts and policy-makers), perceptual and cognitive aspects of the analytic task, Interactive Machine Learning, and collaborative analysis using visual information systems. Effective deployment and case studies of success from deployed visualization and analytics experiences We invite computational, cognitive, and organizational perspectives on advanced data processing and interactive visualization across a range of human endeavors. We also invite participation from researchers who are looking at scaling issues and multiscale issues, whether these scales refer to the time of decision making, the form-factor and operational constraints of mobile devices, the number of decision makers or the more traditional notion of multiscale simulation and real world scales of data. We are particularly interested in approaches that combine computational and interactive analytics in "mixed initiative" systems, decision support in the context of an organization (e.g. communication between analysts and policy-makers), perceptual and cognitive aspects of the analytic task, and collaborative analysis using visual information systems.
