The 13th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held in Baltimore, MD, USA in conjunction with IEEE VIS. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers may present techniques, applications, practical experience, theory, analysis, experiments, or evaluations. We encourage the submission of papers on technologies and methods that promise to improve cyber security practices, including, but not limited to: - Situation awareness and/or understanding - Incident handling including triage, exploration, correlation, and response - Computer forensics - Recording and reporting results of investigations - Assisting proactive security configuration and deployment - Reverse engineering and malware analysis - Vulnerability management - Multiple data source analysis - Analyzing information requirements for computer network defense - Evaluation and/or user testing of VizSec systems - Criteria for assessing the effectiveness of cyber security visualizations (whether from a security goal perspective or a human factors perspective) - Modeling system and network behavior - Modeling attacker and defender behavior - Studying risk and impact of cyber attacks - Predicting future attacks or targets - Security metrics and education - Software security - Mobile application security - Social networking privacy and security When applicable, visualization and interaction techniques that effectively capture the insights of human analysts and/or allow analysts to collaborate efficiently are particularly desirable. *** New for 2016! *** Case Studies ---------------------------------- Short papers describing practical applications of security visualization are solicited. We encourage the submission of papers discussing the introduction of cyber security visualizations into operational context, including, but not limited to: - Cases where visualization made positive contributions towards meeting operational needs - Gaps or negative outcomes from visualization deployments - Situations where visualization was not utilized, but could have had a positive impact - Lessons learned from operational engagements - Insights gained from the transition process Cyber security practitioners from industry, as well as the research community, are encouraged to submit case studies. Posters ------- Poster submissions may showcase late-breaking results, work in progress, preliminary results, or visual representations relevant to the VizSec community. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the attendees and solicit feedback. Submissions ----------- Submissions must be formated using the IEEE VGTC template that can be found at http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html. All submissions should be in PDF format. Submit papers and poster abstracts using EasyChair: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=vizsec2016 Papers should be at most 8 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee. Committee members are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. The VizSec proceedings will be published by IEEE. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference. Case Studies Case studies should be at most 4 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Case study submissions will be reviewed by the Paper Chair(s) and other members of the organizing committee to determine relevance to the VizSec community. Accepted case study authors will have time to present their work at VizSec during the program. Accepted case studies will be made available on this website. Extended abstract for posters should be at most 2 pages including the bibliography. Poster abstracts will be reviewed by the Poster Chair(s) and other members of the organizing committee to determine relevance to the VizSec community. Accepted authors must present a corresponding poster during the workshop. The poster authors can determine the layout by themselves, but the dimensions of the posters should not exceed the A0 space (841mm x 1189mm or 33.1" x 46.8"). Additionally, poster authors are requested to give a brief oral preview during a plenary "fast forward" session. Accepted poster abstracts will be made available on this website. When applicable, submissions including tests and evaluations of the proposed tools and techniques are considered particularly desirable. Immersive Analytics aims to bring together researchers in Information Visualization, Visual Analytics, Virtual and Augmented Reality and Natural User Interfaces. The workshop is held as part of ACM ISS Interactive Spaces and Systems on November 6th, 2016 in Niagara Falls, Canada. http://iss2016.acm.org >> Why? Due to the recent advances in immersive technologies (VR, AR, large displays, tangible surfaces, etc.), we see new opportunities to using these technologies to analyze and explore data. Visual analytics is concerned with analytical reasoning facilitated by interactive visual interfaces. This definition is agnostic of the actual interface devices employed by visual analysis systems. Nevertheless, the affordances of the display and input devices used for analyzing data strongly affect the experience of the users of such systems, and so, their degree of engagement and productivity. However, a systematic approach to developing visual analytic tools that move beyond the desktop is yet lacking. >> What? In this call, we are looking for innovative research, design, and view-points, mature or work-in-progress, that fall into or are related to the following topics: * Real-world VA/AR, * Collaboration, * Hybrid 2D/3D, * Affordances for Immersion, * Changing Technologies, * Application Areas, * Platforms and Toolkits. A two-year position as postdoctoral research fellow is available at University of Copenhagen in the Human-Computer Interaction Group at Department of Computer Science (http://www.diku.dk) The candidate will join the BIOPRO team to design and evaluate novel interactive visualizations that help domain experts develop and combine mathematical models and statistical models with online sensor-data with the ultimate goal of optimizing bio-based production processes. We work with domain experts from leading bio-based manufacturing companies in Denmark and with leading university researchers in chemical engineering, chemometrics, and applied statistics. Applicants are welcome to develop their own directions of research within the above context, and will have the opportunity to design both for workstations and high-resolution wall displays. Applicants must have a PhD in computer science and must have research experience in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction or Information Visualization. Knowledge of bio-based processes is not required; knowledge of predictive modeling is a plus, but is not mandatory. The deadline for applications is August 5, 2016. We invite contributions for the 2016 Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities: http://www.vis4dh.com This will be a one day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2016 in Baltimore, MD. http://ieeevis.org/ The purpose of this workshop is to propose new research directions in visualization for the digital humanities, to familiarize the visualization research community with the problems faced by digital humanities researchers, and to foster future collaboration between visualization and digital humanities research. Despite the growing popularity of digital methods for research in the humanities, digital humanists are underserved by academics in visualization, and under-represented in visualization conferences. This is due to a number of factors: 1. The differences in rhetorics of proof and discovery (and so differences in data culture and use) in the humanities as opposed to other, typically scientific or analytic fields where visualization research is commonly focused. 2. The difficulty of performing task analysis and evaluation for many humanities questions, that may have no ground truth. 3. In text visualization specifically, the difference between the needs of digital humanists (who perform close readings and critical engagements with texts) as opposed to more standard text visualization scenarios (e.g. text analytics on datasets for intelligence or social media analysis). Addressing these difficulties requires exposure of these data issues, interdisciplinary collaboration, and steering of future research directions. Submission This workshop is seeking work from scholars in both visualization and the humanities who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page) papers, falling into one of three submission types: - Extended Abstracts: These submissions are meant to highlight emerging visualization research in the digital humanities. The intention of these shorter submissions is to provide a platform for feedback for work that is still in progress, rather than present completed projects. - Short Papers: These submissions are meant to summarize more mature work in visualization for the digital humanities, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and propose solutions) of designing visualizations for the digital humanities. Applied work from the digital humanities that is highly visual in nature would also be considered for acceptance. - Position Papers: These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the digital humanities. These positions should be informed by deep involvement and experience in one (or ideally, both) fields. Position papers should be thought-provoking but also well-supported. Authors of accepted short and position papers will be invited for a 9-minute research presentation (including 2 minutes for audience questions). Additionally, they will participate in a moderated panel discussion. Authors of accepted extended abstracts will give 5 minute "fast-forward" presentations. Authors wishing to submit their work double blind should remove author information from the cover page of their submitted document, and take care to avoid identifying information in the submission itself (e.g., references to "our" work). Submissions should be in pdf format, and the submission email should clearly indicate the paper type: extended abstract, short paper, or position paper. Submissions should not exceed four pages. Topics The focus of this workshop is on applied visualization in the digital humanities, as well as highlighting domains in the digital humanities with unmet visualization challenges. These applications and domains include, but are not limited to: · Literature · Philology and Linguistics · Art and Art Criticism · Political Science · Performance (Music, Dance, Film, and Theatre) · Cultural and Historical Studies We are especially interested in a number of open questions in this space, including: · The impact of visual analytics systems on research in the digital humanities: - How can interactive visualizations support new questions, and new scales of research, in the DH community? - How can we encourage DH scholars to seek out visualizations, or collaboration with visualization researchers? · Characteristics of visualization for the digital humanities: - How does visualization with a DH focus differ from general research in the visualization community? How do their user groups differ? - How can we remove obstacles for humanities scholars wanting to use visual analytics approaches for their research? · How digital humanities research questions and tasks can push the frontier of visualization research: - What challenges are there for developing systems with novelty in both visualization and DH communities? - How do we evaluate visualizations where we lack ground truth data?
