The 2016 contest theme is "Spatio-temporal Visual Analytics." The contest will be administered by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC and in collaboration with ACT, Inc. (ACT is a non-profit organization in the education readiness assessment sector.) The awards will be announced at the IEEE VPG Reception to be held at the IEEE VIS 2016 conference. You are not required to attend either the VIS 2016 conference or the VPG reception to participate in the contest. Contest Challenge: Spatio-temporal Visual Analytics ACT operates nearly 9,000 testing centers annually to deliver The ACT Assessment to over two million high school students on six different Saturdays each year as part of its open, "National" program. Use of the test data by schools and government agencies has grown significantly in recent years. This growth is increasing the demands on the ACT network and test seat availability. Thus, ACT seeks to use data to carefully mange its system and its operating costs. The 2016 challenge is to develop a visual representation of how changes in availability of an ACT product (i.e., an assessment test) in a geographic area or as part of a distribution network can affect nearby or adjacent distribution sites by moving students or assessments, changing dates, or some other strategy. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * How does the introduction of a new delivery location affect existing delivery? * How does the addition or subtraction of a distribution site affect demand in neighboring sites? * How do proximity and availability affect participation in the assessment by geographic region? * What is the optimal Test Center Network for each season by geographic region? * What geographic areas are at risk of under or over utilization? * How can derived measures like Market Saturation, Percent Utilization, and Cost per Unit be aggregated and visualized at local, regional and national levels? Eligibility All visualization and visual analytics designers, developers, researchers, and practitioners from business, academia, and government sectors around the world are eligible to participate. Submissions cannot promote a commercial product. Submission Limitation Contestants may be lead author on no more than three submissions to the 2016 contest. They may be a co-author of any number of submissions. Submission Deadline Contest packets must be received by 5 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 to qualify for the 2016 contest. Selection Procedure Five distinguished IEEE VPG members chosen jointly by the VGTC and VPC chairs will review the contest submissions thoroughly and assess the top contest winners. The chair of the selection committee will submit the committee's recommendation to the IEEE VGTC chair by Friday, Oct 14, 2016. Contest Award IEEE VGTC will award a certificate to the best submission in each of the following five categories: 1. Overall Excellence 2. Originality 3. Appropriateness 4. Understandability 5. Communication Impact Submissions will be considered in all categories and may win more than one award. Winners in all categories may have a chance to see their visualization work: 1. Being applied to ACT's data analysis, product development, and/or marketing/promotional efforts 2. Appear on a cover of IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A) in 2017. IEEE CG&A will make the final determination about publishing. Submission Details The 2016 contest accepts only static visualizations in the form of an image. Through his work as an artist, researcher, curator and instructor at highly regarded universities, Shaw has contributed significantly to the development and research of immersive visualization environments, innovative user interfaces and interactive narration systems, and imparting of knowledge in media art. With his special artistic and technical competences, Shaw is a pioneer in the investigation and enhancement of creative and interactive possibilities with new technologies. Already in the 1960s Jeffrey Shaw co-founded artist groups that realized progressive participatory projects. Later, Shaw expanded his architectural and dynamic models using computer technology. JEFFREY SHAW's benchmarking and pioneering oeuvre is documented on ADA with over 140 media art works from his earliest 'happenings' like "Corpocinema" (1967) to his most recent site-specific immersions like "Look Up Bombay" (2015). An extensive quantity of images from concept drawings to exhibition photographs record his artistic process from inception to installation. In addition to these still images, and the art history of the digital age to which they are witness, an extended documentation enables ADA community members to more deeply explore SHAW'S body of work. Digital videos document his interactive and multi-media works. And textual material that includes artists statements, press releases, scholarly articles, and technical schematics, offer qualitative information on the multifarious iterations of SHAW'S artworks, exhibitions around the world, and collaborations with specialists such as those in the computer sciences. Further, a transhistorical keyword index, the Media Art Research Thesaurus, interconnects these contemporary media artworks by SHAW with their art historical predecessors on other digital databases, so that users of ADA are able to comparatively investigate his works through the very terms central to his practice–'acoustic,' 'expanded cinema,' 'panorama,' 'virtual,' and beyond! He teaches in courses that include the MediaArtHistories master’s program. Dear Colleague, The visualization and analysis of incomplete data is an area that has not received much attention from the research community, although it is a challenge experienced in many areas of data analysis. You are invited to participate in a survey that aims to evaluate the performance of three visualization methods from the R-package VIM (https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/VIM/VIM.pdf) in the context of displaying incomplete data. From your responses we will be able to evaluate what type of visualization may be best for solving particular tasks, and through this provide guidance for future research. The study is completely anonymous and is part of a project at University of Northumbria at Newcastle, UK. It starts with an instructive video, followed by a set of tasks that will take around 15 minutes to complete. BioVis 2016 Posters track at IEEE VIS in Baltimore, MD October 23rd, 2016 http://biovis.net/2016/ieeevis/ #biovis BioVis 2016 is the 6th Meeting on Biological Data Visualization, an interdisciplinary event covering all aspects of visualization in biology. The meeting brings together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in problems in biological data visualization, as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. It is hosted as a one-day single-track event at VIS (http://ieeevis.org) and a SIG half-day meeting at ISMB (https://www.iscb.org/ismb2016) The *BioVis@Vis 2016 Posters track *offers a venue to present and discuss new research in biological data visualization. Submissions take the form of a short (250-word) abstract with a supporting figure and are presented at the conference site as large format posters during a dedicated poster session. The BioVis workshop as a whole aims to promote interaction between the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities, and the BioVis poster session offers an interactive forum that encourages graphical presentation, demonstration, and active engagement with BioVis participants as well as all attendees of IEEE VIS. *Important Dates* *August 26, 2016* - Poster submission to the BioVis workshop at IEEE VIS *September 9, 2016* - Author notification of posters for the workshop Submission for BioVis@VIS: https://precisionconference.com/~vgtc/ *Example poster topics include, but are not limited to:* Work-in-progress and preliminary results Previously published work from other venues Visualization challenges relevant to the BioVis community Extensions of Papers submissions and content that doesn’t fit Podium presentations Details about, or generalizations of contest submissions *Review Process:* Each poster submission will be read and evaluated by the Poster Chairs for quality and relevance to the BioVis venue with the goal of being as inclusive as possible and encouraging cross-domain interactions.
