The 6th IEEE Symposium on Large Data Analysis and Visualization will be held in conjunction with IEEE VIS 2016 in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 23, 2016. Abstract submission deadline: August 24th, 2016 Call for Posters: We invite you to submit unpublished work to the IEEE LDAV 2016 Poster Program. The poster program is a venue designed to highlight ongoing research and late breaking topics that have produced promising preliminary results. In addition to the topics listed under Call for Papers, we also welcome submissions that showcase successful stories of applying visualization to large-scale data intensive applications. The poster program will be a great opportunity for the authors to interact with the symposium attendees and solicit feedback. Interested authors should submit a two-page abstract that describes the underlying problem, the proposed method, and preliminary results. Accepted poster abstracts will be included in the symposium proceedings. The format of the abstract will be the same as the format used for the regular paper submission. Poster authors are encouraged, but not required, to include a draft or sketch of the poster layout and content in their submission. This would help reviewers and show that the poster format is used effectively. The draft poster should be in PDF format. The authors should indicate if the poster would be accompanied by an on-site demonstration and/or videos. VizSec 2016 Call for Papers - Deadline Extended =============================================== The 13th IEEE Symposium on Visualization for Cyber Security (VizSec) is a forum that brings together researchers and practitioners from academia, government, and industry to address the needs of the cybersecurity community through new and insightful visualization and analysis techniques. VizSec provides an excellent venue for fostering greater exchange and new collaborations on a broad range of security- and privacy-related topics. VizSec will be held on October 24th 2016 in Baltimore, MD, USA in conjunction with IEEE VIS. The purpose of VizSec is to explore effective and scalable visual interfaces for security domains such as network security, computer forensics, reverse engineering, insider threat detection, cryptography, privacy, user assisted attacks prevention, compliance management, wireless security, secure coding, and penetration testing. *** THE DEADLINE FOR VIZSEC 2016 AS BEEN EXTENDED TO THE 8th of August 2016 *** Technical Papers ---------------- Full papers describing novel contributions in security visualization are solicited. Papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee. Committee members are not required to read the appendices or any pages past the maximum. Submissions not meeting these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merit. Reviews are single-blind, so authors may include names and affiliations in their submissions. Submitted papers must not substantially overlap papers that have been published or that are simultaneously submitted to a journal or a conference with proceedings. The VizSec proceedings will be published by IEEE. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be presented at the conference. Case Studies Case studies should be at most 4 pages including the bibliography and appendices. Case study submissions will be reviewed by the Paper Chair(s) and other members of the organizing committee to determine relevance to the VizSec community. Accepted case study authors will have time to present their work at VizSec during the program. Accepted case studies will be made available on this website. Extended abstract for posters should be at most 2 pages including the bibliography. Deadline is this Friday (August 5th) for applications to a two-year position as postdoctoral research fellow at University of Copenhagen in the Human-Computer Interaction Group at Department of Computer Science (http://www.diku.dk) The candidate will join the BIOPRO team to design and evaluate novel interactive visualizations that help domain experts develop and combine mathematical models and statistical models with online sensor-data with the ultimate goal of optimizing bio-based production processes. We work with domain experts from leading bio-based manufacturing companies in Denmark and with leading university researchers in chemical engineering, chemometrics, and applied statistics. Applicants are welcome to develop their own directions of research within the above context, and will have the opportunity to design both for workstations and high-resolution wall displays. Applicants must have a PhD in computer science and must have research experience in the fields of Human-Computer Interaction or Information Visualization. Knowledge of bio-based processes is not required; knowledge of predictive modeling is a plus, but is not mandatory. The deadline for applications is August 5, 2016. Extended DEADLINE: Monday, Aug 15, 2016 CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award http://vacommunity.org/ieeevpg/bestthesis/ IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee (VGTC) sponsors the annual Best Doctoral Dissertation Award program to recognize outstanding academic research and development in visualization and visual analytics. The dissertations must address a topic relevant to visualization or visual analytics. The competition will be administrated by the IEEE Visualization Pioneers Group (VPG) under the auspices of IEEE VGTC. The IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award is presented annually at the IEEE VPG Reception held at the IEEE VIS conference. ELIGIBILITY All English language dissertations that have been successfully defended between July 31 two years before the award and July 31 of the year of the competition are eligible (e.g. between July 31, 2014 and July 31, 2016 are eligible for the 2016 competition). SUBMISSION LIMITATION There is no limitation on the number of nominations that may be made by a university. SUBMISSION DEADLINE Nomination packets must be received by 5pm PDT on Monday, August 15, 2016. SELECTION PROCEDURE Five IEEE VPG members will form a review committee to thoroughly review and assess the dissertation submissions. The committee will judge the dissertations based on their intellectual merit, technical depth, and presentation quality. The selection committee will recommend the winning dissertation to the IEEE VGTC chair by October 1. AWARDS The winner of the IEEE VGTC VPG Doctoral Dissertation Award will receive not only a monetary prize of $500 provided by IEEE VGTC, but also a chance to describe the impact of the winning dissertation in an invited article that may be published in IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications (CG&A). Professor Jim Foley of Georgia Tech and the editor of the CG&A Dissertation Impact Department will make the final determination about whether the article will be published. The CG&A Dissertation Impact Department recognizes the best and brightest dissertation work nominated by different visualization, computer graphics, and virtual reality technical communities from around the world. Deadline Extended: August 6, 2016 We invite contributions for the 2016 Workshop on Visualization for the Digital Humanities: http://www.vis4dh.com This will be a one day workshop taking place as part of IEEE VIS 2016 in Baltimore, MD. http://ieeevis.org/ The purpose of this workshop is to propose new research directions in visualization for the digital humanities, to familiarize the visualization research community with the problems faced by digital humanities researchers, and to foster future collaboration between visualization and digital humanities research. Dr. Min Chen, Oxford University, is confirmed to as one of the keynote speakers on the topic of "Discovering Treasure Troves in Digital Humanities". Despite the growing popularity of digital methods for research in the humanities, digital humanists are underserved by academics in visualization, and under-represented in visualization conferences. This is due to a number of factors: 1. The differences in rhetorics of proof and discovery (and so differences in data culture and use) in the humanities as opposed to other, typically scientific or analytic fields where visualization research is commonly focused. 2. The difficulty of performing task analysis and evaluation for many humanities questions, that may have no ground truth. 3. In text visualization specifically, the difference between the needs of digital humanists (who perform close readings and critical engagements with texts) as opposed to more standard text visualization scenarios (e.g. text analytics on datasets for intelligence or social media analysis). Addressing these difficulties requires exposure of these data issues, interdisciplinary collaboration, and steering of future research directions. Submission This workshop is seeking work from scholars in both visualization and the humanities who use visualization as part of the process of analyzing and interrogating human culture. Submissions will present original research ideas or results as they relate to visualization for the digital humanities. Each submission should clearly state its specific contribution to this growing field of research. Submissions will take the form of short (2-4 page) papers, falling into one of three submission types: - Extended Abstracts: These submissions are meant to highlight emerging visualization research in the digital humanities. The intention of these shorter submissions is to provide a platform for feedback for work that is still in progress, rather than present completed projects. - Short Papers: These submissions are meant to summarize more mature work in visualization for the digital humanities, including case studies, system descriptions, and empirical results. Of special consideration are works that highlight the difficulties (and propose solutions) of designing visualizations for the digital humanities. Applied work from the digital humanities that is highly visual in nature would also be considered for acceptance. - Position Papers: These submissions are meant to present viewpoints and opinions on the interplay between visualization and the digital humanities. These positions should be informed by deep involvement and experience in one (or ideally, both) fields. Position papers should be thought-provoking but also well-supported. Authors of accepted short and position papers will be invited for a 9-minute research presentation (including 2 minutes for audience questions). Additionally, they will participate in a moderated panel discussion. Authors of accepted extended abstracts will give 5 minute "fast-forward" presentations. ************************************************************* 2016 Workshop on Visualization in Practice Call for Abstracts http://visinpractice.org/ ************************************************************* The 2016 Workshop on Visualization in Practice is an opportunity for visualization practitioners and researchers to meet and share experiences, insights, and ideas in applying the latest visualization and visual analytics research to real world problems. The focus of this year's workshop will be the design, development, distribution, and application of open source visualization and visual analytics software. The workshop will include an invited keynote, a session of talks, and a poster session in which live demonstrations of open source tools will be given. All accepted submissions will be given the opportunity to present in the poster/demonstration session. At the discretion of the conference organizers, approximately 12 submissions will also be selected to give an oral presentation during the talk session. The 2016 VIP workshop will be held in conjunction with IEEE VIS in Baltimore, Maryland during the week of October 23-28. Topics --------- Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Design of open source visualization or visual analytic systems and libraries - Demonstrations of new open source tools that address practical visualization problems - Critiques of existing open source visualization systems, informed by real-world usage, with suggestions for improvement - Retrospectives on the process of turning research prototypes into robust, open source software - Discussions of the state of the open source visualization ecosystem---how well do existing tools interoperate? where are there substantial gaps? - Best practices for using open source visualization tools and adopting them within organizations - Proposals for researcher-practitioner collaborations to address real-world visualization challenges We especially encourage submissions from practitioners who apply visualization and visual analytics to real-world problems in journalism, industry, national laboratories, government, non-profits, etc. Submission ---------------- We solicit submissions of extended abstracts of up to 2 pages, IEEE paper format guidelines (http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html) plus up to 12 additional figures (beyond those in the abstract) which cover the visual content you would include in your final poster or in a talk, if invited to give one. The images should be appended to the 2-page document (thus, your whole document may have more than 2 pages). You are invited to use captions in order to explain your images. To clarify, we count a Latex figure as one item regardless of how many sub-images it contains. Optionally, you may submit a video (MPEG, AVI, or Quicktime format, duration at most 5 minutes) showing your methods or processes in action. This will be most helpful for demonstrating the effectiveness of your approach. If you would like to have your video included in the conference USB stick, it should not exceed 100MB. Abstracts will be reviewed for their potential applicability to the VIP workshop audience and their potential positive impact on the broader open source visualization community. Additionally, they will be reviewed for timeliness, clarity, and overall quality of writing. Where applicable, the described open source software will also be reviewed for robustness, applicability, ease of access (e.g. github repository), licensing, documentation, and ease of running an initial demonstration. Submissions should provide clear directions to where the software can be downloaded. Note that research novelty is explicitly not a criteria for evaluation at the VIP workshop. KEYNOTES =========== Keynote Speech 1: TITLE: Beyond the Two Cultures: A Crisis in Representation Prof. Malina Roger (The University of Texas at Dallas, USA) Abstract: As an astrophysicist, I have spent my career bathing in astronomical data, the data world is as real to me as the sensory physical world. Yet we are still in the stone age of representing digital data in forms that we can understand and feel. Three years ago I started the UT Dallas ArtSciLab where artists and scientists work side by side making trouble with data. I will present our work with neuroscientists, astronomers and geoscientists and also talk about the new born digital hybrids whose existence gives the lie to the very concept of C P Snow’s Two Cultures. Short Bio: Malina is a space scientist and astronomer, an art-science researcher, Arts and Technology Distinguished Chair Professor, and Professor of Physics, at UT Dallas. He obtained his B.S. in physics from MIT in 1972, and his Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1979. Founded the ArtSciLab which hosts projects which involve collaboration between artists and scientists, resulting in art works, scientific data exploration tools, and public engagement activities involving the integration of the arts, design and humanities in science, technology, education and mathematics (STEAM). Malina is an elected member of the International Academy of Astronautics. "Laser d’or" Prize, from the International Video Art Organization. Keynote Speech 2: TITLE: Visual Analytics and the VAST Challenges: this year’s Challenge and a retrospective look at an influential international competition Prof. Georges Grinstein (University of Massachusetts Lowell, USA) Abstract: The VAST Challenges are a decade old and have had large international participation. The challenge data sets are mostly synthetic with embedded ground truth and participants are asked stop solve a particular problem, which in many cases involves discovering that ground truth, which in turns makes it easier to objectively evaluate submissions. But submissions are also evaluated several other ways. I will discuss several key problems in Visual Analytics, provide examples of how the VAST Challenges were developed as an attack on these problems, and show award winning solutions. I will also discuss the importance of open source tools in solving these problems. Short Bio: Georges Grinstein is Professor of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, was head of its Bioinformatics Program, Director of its Institute for Visualization and Perception Research, and is now Chief Scientific Officer of Weave Visual Analytics. He received his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Rochester in 1978. His work is broad and interdisciplinary, covering the perceptual and cognitive foundations of visualization, very high-dimensional data visualization, visual analytics and applications. The emphasis is on the modeling, visualization, and analysis of complex information data and systems. He has over 40 years in academia with extensive consulting, over 300 research grants, products in use nationally and internationally, several patents, numerous publications in journals and conferences, a book on interactive data visualization, founded several companies, been the organizer or chair of national and international conferences and workshops in Computer Graphics, in Visualization, and in Data Mining. He has given numerous keynotes and mentored over 40 doctoral students and hundreds of graduate students. He has been on the editorial boards of several journals in Computer Graphics and Data Mining, a member of ANSI and ISO, a NATO Expert, and a technology consultant for various government agencies and commercial organizations. For the last ten years he has co-chaired the IEEE VAST Challenges in visual analytics leading to new research areas. He has developed and taught new courses, one of which Radical Design focused on how to develop radical new products instead of evolutionary ones. He is a member of the Department of Homeland Security’s Center of Excellence CCICADA (Command, Control and Interoperability Center for Advanced Data Analysis), and directs the development of Weave, an open source web-based interactive collaborative visual analytics system incorporating numerous innovations. 2. PANEL ========Facilitating Visualization Capacity Building Organizers: Vetria L. Byrd (Purdue University) and Joseph A. Cottam (CREST/Indiana University) Panel Members: TBA Visualization plays an important role in discovery and insight. As a tool, visualization is often times utilized as a light in a sea of data providing insight to large, complex datasets. The scientific community and society at large are the beneficiaries of the utility visualization brings. As more and more data is created and consumed persons with knowledge of the visualization process, applications, methods and techniques will continue to be in demand in all fields with data visualization needs. The purposes of this panel are two-fold: (1) to discuss the need for facilitating visualization capacity building: incorporating visualization early and often into computing and other educational programs to equip students with transferrable skillsets that are in demand in the global workforce and (2) to facilitate a discussion on what knowledge base is needed to build and strengthen visualization capacity of users in visualization application domains. 3.
