This workshop addresses both experienced researchers and practitioners as well as those who are new to the field but interested in applying Data Physicalization to their own (research) practice. The workshop will provide opportunities for participants to explore Data Physicalization hands-on, by creating their own prototypes built with tangible media including digital fabrication technologies. These practical explorations will lead into reflective discussions on the role tangibles and embodiment play in Data Physicalization and the future research challenges for this area. The aim of this workshop is: * To create an awareness of the potential of Data Physicalization by providing an overview of state-of-the-art research, practice, and tools * To build a community around this emerging field and start to discuss a shared research agenda. The workshop will be divided into three phases, each focusing on a different aspect of physical data representation. Phase 1 and 2 will be held over the course of day one (14th Feb), while part three will take place over a half-day session (16th Feb). The ICCS conferences evolved from a series of seven annual workshops on conceptual graphs, starting with an informal gathering hosted by John F. Sowa in 1986. Recently, graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) paradigms are getting more and more attention. The aim of the ICCS 2016 conference is to build upon its long standing expertise in graph-based KRR and focus on providing modelling, formal and application results of graph-based systems. ICCS 2016 will be co-located with FOIS 2016, held in Annecy, in the Polytech building at the campus of the University of Savoie. The conference welcomes contributions that address graph-based representation and reasoning paradigms (e.g. Bayesian Networks (BNs), Semantic Networks (SNs), RDF(S), Conceptual Graphs (CGs), Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), CP-Nets, GAI-Nets, Graph Databases, Diagrams, etc.) from a modelling, theoretical and application viewpoint: - Modelling results will investigate concrete real world needs for graph-based representation, how certain use cases are of interest to the graph community, how using graphs can bring added (business) value, what kind of graph representation is needed for a given case, etc. - Technical results will include fundamental graph theory based results for novel structures for representation, extensions of existing structures for added expressivity, conciseness, optimisation algorithms for reasoning, reasoning explanation, etc. - Papers reporting on application experience will be expected to demonstrate the benefits of the graph-based proposed solutions in the context of the use case studied with respect to other possible solutions. Purdue University is accepting applications for participation in the REU Site: Research Experience for Undergraduates in Collaborative Data Visualization Applications for summer 2016. REU Site funded by NSF ACI Award 1359223. About the Program: Interdisciplinary Research in Visualization, Paid Research Experience, $4K stipend for the summer (8 weeks), travel stipend to and from Purdue University. Each student is assigned to a REU Team with data visualization needs. This arrangement fosters collaboration among team members, an appreciation of the visualization process and an understanding of the role visualization plays in discovery and analysis. All majors, women and members of underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply. However, the emotional states of users are rarely taken into account when developing interaction techniques and/or the visual representations themselves. In many application scenarios, it would be beneficial if emotional measurements could be visualized in order to raise user awareness of their own and others' emotional states as well as how these emotions influence their reasoning and decision making. Additionally, with the help of emotional data, certain visualization systems should be able to adapt to the users’ mental models, cognitive processes and emotional states in terms of interaction and visual representation in order to support the analysis and exploration process. Our goal is to foster this novel area of visualization that takes user affective states into consideration. The EmoVis 2016 workshop is co-located with the ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (ACM IUI 2016) and welcomes researchers, practitioners and experts from a variety of scientific domains, including visualization, human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, and multimedia. This workshop will act as a forum where people with diverse backgrounds can present design principles and introduce novel techniques for affect measurement and visualization. We invite submissions that explore user emotional states in context of interactive visualization. Topics for submissions include but are not limited to the following areas: * emotion measurement devices and technologies, such as BCIs or smart wristbands * emotion detection algorithms, e.g., based on user physiology, user language/intonation or written text like Twitter posts * emotion visualization for individuals, groups or crowds * emotion visualization for supporting social interaction * capturing or generating engagement at large-scale events * awareness of emotions in collaboration or analysis tasks * emotion-adaptive visualizations capable of determining and reacting to user emotional states * user studies and evaluation techniques for emotion visualization and emotion-adaptive visualizations Workshop papers accepted for EmoVis 2016 will be published in a joint CEUR proceedings (http://ceur-ws.org/) Submissions may be full research papers (maximal 8 pages) or shorter papers (maximal 4 pages) which may describe position statements, novel ideas, work-in-progresses, or recent results related to the topics of emotion and visualization. The authors should clearly indicate the submission type at the end of the abstract in order to help reviewers better understand their contributions. We select the papers according to novelty and quality on the one hand side, but also based on their potential to contribute to the workshop discussions. European Geosciences Union annual assembly Vienna | Austria | 17–22 April 2016. Communication of uncertain information in earth sciences: data, models and visualization Information in the earth sciences is supplied to many end users, including regulators, policy makers and the general public. It is important that these end users understand the uncertainties in information so that they can make robust decisions. Much effort has been put into quantitative methods to describe the uncertainty in environmental information, but the outputs these generate (probabilities, confidence intervals etc.) are not always understood by the end user. Effective communication of uncertain information is an important challenge, and one which must be tackled collaboratively by earth scientists, statisticians, psychologists and others. In 2015 there was a successful session held at EGU to bring together scientists with a range of backgrounds to consider these issues. We believe that the area remains a lively and important one, and want to continue the discussion. We therefore invite you to consider submitting an abstract to the session.
