BioVis 2016 BioVis SIG (highlights and posters track) at ISMB in Orlando, FL July 8th, 2016 BioVis (papers, posters, contest track) at IEEE VIS in Baltimore, MD October 24th, 2016 http://www.biovis.net #biovis BioVis 2016 is the 6th Symposium on Biological Data Visualization, an interdisciplinary event covering all aspects of visualization in biology. The Symposium brings together researchers from the visualization, bioinformatics, and biology communities with the purpose of educating, inspiring, and engaging visualization researchers in problems in biological data visualization, as well as bioinformatics and biology researchers in state-of-the-art visualization research. It is hosted as a one-day single-track event at VIS (http://ieeevis.org) and a SIG half-day meeting at ISMB (https://www.iscb.org/ismb2016) We invite submissions of original research articles, poster submissions, as well as submissions for data visualization and redesign contests. We invite contributions on all aspects of data visualization in biology, from molecular to cell, tissue, organism and population biology. Poster submissions can be submitted to either the BioVis SIG meeting at ISMB, or to the BioVis symposium at VIS. Paper and Contest submissions can only be submitted to the BioVis symposium at VIS. All accepted papers for the conference will be linked on the BioVis website (http://www.biovis.net) and will be made available through the IEEE Digital Library and/or BMC Proceedings. In addition, all papers accepted for the conference will be considered for publication in the BMC Bioinformatics journal (impact factor 2.6), as part of the conference two-round review process. The ICCS conferences evolved from a series of seven annual workshops on conceptual graphs, starting with an informal gathering hosted by John F. Sowa in 1986. Recently, graph-based knowledge representation and reasoning (KRR) paradigms are getting more and more attention. The aim of the ICCS 2016 conference is to build upon its long standing expertise in graph-based KRR and focus on providing modelling, formal and application results of graph-based systems. ICCS 2016 will be co-located with FOIS 2016, held in Annecy, in the Polytech building at the campus of the University of Savoie. The conference welcomes contributions that address graph-based representation and reasoning paradigms (e.g. Bayesian Networks (BNs), Semantic Networks (SNs), RDF(S), Conceptual Graphs (CGs), Formal Concept Analysis (FCA), CP-Nets, GAI-Nets, Graph Databases, Diagrams, etc.) from a modelling, theoretical and application viewpoint: - Modelling results will investigate concrete real world needs for graph-based representation, how certain use cases are of interest to the graph community, how using graphs can bring added (business) value, what kind of graph representation is needed for a given case, etc. - Technical results will include fundamental graph theory based results for novel structures for representation, extensions of existing structures for added expressivity, conciseness, optimisation algorithms for reasoning, reasoning explanation, etc. - Papers reporting on application experience will be expected to demonstrate the benefits of the graph-based proposed solutions in the context of the use case studied with respect to other possible solutions. Two fixed-term postdoctoral researcher’s positions at the School of Information Sciences, University of Tampere The School of Information Sciences (SIS) at the University of Tampere invites applications for two fixed-term full-time postdoctoral researcher’s positions for a period from 1 March 2016 to 28 February 2018. The research takes place in the project ”Novel methods for analysis of online consumer behavior (NAOMI)”, which is a collaboration between University of Tampere, Lappeenranta University of Technology, and industrial collaborator Aller Media. The postdoctoral researchers will develop new well-performing, computationally efficient, and scalable methods based on probabilistic modeling, data mining, and machine learning for data analysis, visualization, information retrieval, and prediction in big consumer behavior data. The main data sources are large structured data of online conversations and clickstream data of consumer behavior. The postdoctoral researchers will participate in all parts of the research process including idea development, methods development, data gathering, empirical testing, and publication in high-quality international venues. In position 1 the task of the postdoctoral researcher focuses more on developing, implementing, and testing novel methods of information retrieval and probabilistic modeling to learn from multiple sources. In position 2 the task of the postdoctoral researcher focuses more on developing, implementing, and testing novel computational and statistical methods of click analysis and user behavior modeling. Other tasks of research staff are governed by University of Tampere's regulations on human resources, Section 3. Required and Desired Qualities of the Applicant, and Contract Details: A person appointed as a postdoctoral researcher must hold an appropriate doctoral degree in a field related to the research tasks (such as statistics, computer science, visual analytics, or a related field) and must be able to pursue scientific research independently as well as have the instructional skills needed in the post. A strong track record of research and scientific publication in top venues is appreciated. Good programming skills are expected. The most likely languages to be utilized in the project are Python, and Matlab or R. Good written and spoken communication skills in English, Finnish, or both are desirable. The remuneration of the postdoctoral researcher post is based on level 5 of the job-related salary element for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish Universities. The basic salary will be supplemented with a performance increase based on the employee's individual performance. The positions carry a four-month trial period. It is also possible to start as a researcher if one has made good progress in PhD studies and has a sufficient track record. In this case the remuneration of the post is based on level 4 of the job-related salary element for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of the Finnish Universities.
