Dear colleagues, We’re happy to announce the call for papers for the VIS4DH workshop co-located with the IEEE VIS Conference in Vienna, Austria! The VIS4DH workshop brings together researchers and practitioners from the fields of visualization and the humanities to discuss new research directions at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities research. This year, you can contribute to VIS4DH 2025 in two ways - you can submit to the workshop’s Paper track, or you can submit to the Agora track, which calls for provocations, artworks, work in progress, or lab talks. Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the (digital) humanities and social sciences, and to all areas of visualization research and practice. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. While the workshop theme for VIS4DH’25 remains open to all submissions exploring the intersection of the humanities and visualization, we especially invite contributions related to the theme Visualizing Peace and Conflict as a response to the global increase of violence and armed conflict (seehttps://ucdp.uu.se/encyclopedia). At the same time, however, submissions do not need to focus explicitly on conflict between warring parties. We also encourage submissions related to ideological, civil, social, environmental, or epistemic conflicts and the potential for their resolution to address a broader theme/trend of intensified division worldwide. The topic aims to bring together researchers in international relations, peace & conflict resolution, sociology, anthropology, digital humanities, and visualization to present and discuss how research approaches in these areas can critically inform one another and contribute to new ways of studying conflict and its peaceful resolution. Besides general contributions at the intersection of visualization and (digital) humanities that provide theoretical and/or applied perspectives, with this year’s theme, we invite work around (but not limited to) the following questions: * How can visualization techniques make cultural phenomena which are substantially structured or driven by tensions, antagonisms, controversies, or conflicts visible and negotiable? * How can visualization tools be designed to inform or support the resolution of conflicts? * What visual strategies can be employed to highlight how political conflicts frequently translate into representational or interpretive conflicts (e.g., generating contested or conflicting descriptions, datasets, framings, rhetorics, or other design choices)? * What role do disagreements play in collaborative research and visualization processes, and how might those be productively visualized rather than resolved or hidden? Research papers should address cognitive and design aspects, underlying theories, taxonomies, implementation work, tool support, and case studies. ** TRACKS ** Technical Papers: A technical paper describes a new algorithm, technique, system, or theory that has not previously appeared in the literature. The description provided in the paper should be complete enough that a competent/qualified graduate student in visual information communication could implement or apply the work and should provide a formal/informal evaluation and discussion regarding its strengths and weaknesses. Art Papers: This track serves as a link between arts, design, technology, and science by offering creative views and artistic applications. We are especially interested in the submissions that demonstrate tangible and artistic ways of visual information communication and address information aesthetics. The topics range from experimental and interdisciplinary case studies and methodologies, novel and critical interfaces for VINCI topics to critical analysis of theory and reference works in the field. The art papers call is open-theme, and this year, we have three types in the Art Papers: full papers, short papers and posters. Art and Media Galleries: The VINCI Art and Media Galleries celebrates artistic creations demonstrating conceptual and technological innovation related to visual information communication and interaction. We accept project topics, including data art, generative art and design, interactive graphics, real-time simulation, scientific illustration, creative and critical visualization, and more. The art and media galleries call is open-theme. This year, we have two types in the Art and Media Galleries: Media Demos and Artworks. Cultural Heritage Special Track: A new Special Track this year to explore and advance the intersection of visual information communication and cultural heritage. This special track invites contributions that demonstrate how visual techniques, tools, and systems can be applied to safeguard, promote, study, and interact with cultural heritage, encompassing both tangible and intangible aspects. https://human-ai-sensemaking.github.io/ Beyond Chat: Visual Languages for Embodied Human-LLM Interaction in Sensemaking An IEEE VL/HCC 2025 workshop 2025 Workshop Summary Date and Location: TBD, co-located with IEEE VL/HCC (October 6-10, 2025), Raleigh, North Carolina, United States User interfaces for Human-LLM interaction in information-intensive tasks such as sensemaking have predominantly been limited to the chatbot style of interaction. The linear nature of chat poses significant limitations on sensemaking activity that often requires nonlinear thinking, incremental formalization, use of diverse information sources, etc. Human cognition in sensemaking tasks exploits a psychological phenomenon called embodied cognition, which externalizes thought processes onto interactive visual workspaces and canvases that enable complex iterative structuring of ideas. These nonlinear structures often represent various forms of visual languages for sensemaking —- space to think. While LLMs also exploit the notion of external memory in the form of prompt context or chain of thought, these are often limited to sequential text inputs. Is there a possibility of marrying the analogous concepts of human embodied cognition and LLM context? Can the visual languages of embodied cognition serve as a common ground between human cognition and LLM processing? Can LLMs have a form of embodied AI cognition that exploits visual languages? As AI agents become increasingly autonomous, how can visual languages support incremental progression and reduce uncertainty in various sensemaking scenarios, from simple coordination to active collaboration to full teaming, while enabling trust between humans and AI? This workshop seeks contributions that push these frontiers and bring together a multi-disciplinary group of researchers in HCI, AI, cognitive science, visual languages, and computer vision. The workshop will foster a community that will discuss and prepare a forward-looking research agenda for embodied human-LLM interaction with visual languages. Topics of Interest Topics of interest include but are not limited to: Design or evaluation of visual languages for AI User interface or visualization design for human-AI interaction Theories for human-AI common ground in sensemaking Methods for human steering or explainability of AI sensemaking NLP methods for augmenting LLMs with embodied cognition capabilities Models for LLM processing of visual languages Evaluations of human-AI teaming for sensemaking Call For Participation Two types of contributions are sought, each with separate deadlines and review criteria. Research Papers: Manuscripts that contain results suitable for publication, which will be presented at the workshop. Research paper submissions will be peer-reviewed by a minimum of one organizer and one knowledgeable external reviewer recruited by the organizers to ensure relevance, quality, and soundness of results. A length of 4-8 pages is required. The VL/HCC Conference plans to publish accepted workshop manuscripts in an accompanying volume published by IEEE. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications for which it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Graph Drawing has been the main annual conference in this area for more than 30 years. GD 2025 is designed to be held on-site. It is expected that regular papers are presented on site by one of the authors. To promote a balanced coverage of the field, GD has two distinct tracks, and papers submitted to one track will not compete with papers submitted to the other track. Regular papers must be submitted explicitly to one of the two tracks. However, all program committee members may review papers from either track. *TRACK 1:* Combinatorial and algorithmic aspects This track is mainly devoted to *fundamental theoretical graph drawing advances*, such as combinatorial and algorithmic aspects. Papers in this category will be assigned a shorter time for presentation during the conference. *REMOTE PRESENTATIONS* For authors who cannot present their paper in person we offer the possibility for remote presentation, which must be declared at submission time. Authors of accepted papers in this category have to register for the conference. Papers in this category are evaluated and selected by the program committee by applying the same high standards as for the other tracks. In addition, the authors have to submit a recording of their presentation two weeks after the submission of the paper. The remote submission chair can influence the score of papers in this track based on the quality of the recorded talk and even reject submissions if the quality of the recorded talk is inappropriate. There is a limit of six remote presentations. *POSTERS & CONTEST* Submissions of posters on graph drawing, network visualization, and related areas are solicited. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results (which may also appear elsewhere) to the GD community. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract that must be submitted together with the poster itself. Each submission will thus consist of two pdf files (the abstract and the poster). Details about the traditional *Graph Drawing Contest*, which is held at the conference, are provided at the website <https://mozart.diei.unipg.it/gdcontest/2025/>. ================================================================ RULES FOR SUBMISSION Results that have been previously published (or are scheduled for publication) in another conference proceedings or journal, as well as simultaneous submissions of results to other conferences with published proceedings or journals are not permitted, except for poster submissions. With the exception of remote presentations, each paper or poster must be presented at the conference by an author, otherwise the paper can be excluded from publication in the proceedings. ChatGPT and similar large language models may be used to improve the paper’s language, but its use should be mentioned as a footnote and the authors remain responsible for the full paper. In particular, the unattributed use of any such tools in the creation of the paper’s scientific content is forbidden. *SUBMISSION FORMAT* The proceedings will be published in the LIPIcs <https://www.dagstuhl.de/en/publishing/series/details/lipics> series. To facilitate the process, submissions have to be prepared in accordance with the LIPIcs author instructions <https://submission.dagstuhl.de/series/details/LIPIcs#author>, the page provides links to the LIPIcs class file along with an example and detailed author instructions. For the submission, the use of the LaTeX class file gd-lipics-v2.cls <https://graphdrawing.github.io/gd2025/assets/template/gd-lipics-v2.cls> is requested. The class file is a wrapper around the standard LIPIcs class and implements line counting, see CG-linecount.pdf <https://www.computational-geometry.org/guidelines/linecount_2022_09_19.pdf> for details. Submissions must not exceed the following limits: - 500 lines for full papers, - 225 lines for short papers, - 80 lines for posters’ abstracts. The above limits do not include front matter (title, authors, and affiliations), references, or appendices. The class files provide line counting which should be accurate in most cases. Authors should avoid substantial amounts of text in unnumbered lines. In addition, the main content of the paper must not exceed the following page limits excluding references: - 15 pages for long papers, - 7 pages for short papers, - 3 pages posters’ abstracts. The claims of full and short papers should be fully substantiated. If this information does not fit within the line limit, the authors should include it in a clearly marked appendix, whose length is not constrained and which the reviewers may read at their own discretion. For poster submissions, no appendix is expected. We also encourage authors to avoid "et al." in citations in favor of an equal mention of the surnames of all authors. For references with few authors, it is recommended to name all of them; if the number of authors is large, consider writing "(It is shown that) X [#]" or "The authors in [#] show that X" instead of "A et al. [#] show that X". *PAPER SUBMISSION, PROCEEDINGS AND SPECIAL ISSUE* Papers should be submitted electronically via Easychair <https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=gd2025>. The proceedings will be published in the *Leibniz International Proceedings in Informatics (LIPIcs)* series and are available open access. Selected papers from Track 1 and Track 2 will be invited for submission to a special issue of the *Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications (JGAA)*. The authors of two selected papers in Track 2 will be invited to submit a substantially extended and enhanced version of their work to *IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG)*. A special TVCG papers session at the Graph Drawing conference will also feature regular TVCG papers. This means that authors are not allowed to reveal their identity in the submitted paper, but are free to disseminate draft versions of the paper prior to the conference and to give talks on the topic as they normally would. In particular, the submitted paper should not contain the authors’ names, affiliations, and email addresses. References to their own related work are allowed, as long as the supporting text maintains anonymity (e.g., using sentences in the third person). Members of the Program Committee will not have the identity of the authors of any paper revealed to them during the entire review process. To handle conflicts of interest effectively, authors will be required to declare conflicts of interest with PC members when they submit their paper. Poster submissions will be evaluated by the Program Committee in a single-blind mode. In particular, the submitted abstract should contain the authors’ names, affiliations, and email addresses. ================================================================ AWARDS For each of the two tracks, the Program Committee of GD 2025 will bestow a Best Paper Award. Dear colleagues and friends, Next week, I will present the Human-Data-Model Interaction (HDMI) Canvas <https://arxiv.org/abs/2505.07534> as a position paper at EuroVA 2025 <https://www.eurova.org/eurova-2025>. The HDMI Canvas structures key Visual Analytics building blocks by the benefits they offer for Humans, Data, and Models. It also maps how Humans, Data, and Models contribute to the Visual Analytics process — what we describe as the three E’s: - Externalizationof Human Knowledge and Preferences, - Exploration of Data, - Explanation of Models (including statistics, analytical methods, and machine learning) I am looking for feedback to help refine and generalize the canvas, towards a tool that is useful for the community.
