Despite its extraordinary performance, AI in biomedical applications should be treated cautiously due to the high stakes involved. Effective visualization can significantly improve the information communication between AI systems and human users and is playing an increasingly important role in biomedical AI. To explore the challenges and opportunities in this highly interdisciplinary field, we invite submissions from both 1) visualization researchers that conduct application studies on biomedical AI and 2) biomedical AI researchers who address their domain challenges with the help of visualizations. Apart from visualization tools, case studies, evaluations, and design guidelines, we also highly encourage white papers that discuss scenarios where visualizations are most needed and the obstacles in applying visualizations, regardless of whether the biomedical researchers have developed visualization tools or not. We accept two types of submissions: • A 2-4 page paper (without references) of unpublished work using the IEEE VGTC Conference Style Template. • An up-to 400-word short abstract related to a recent study that has been published at a non-Visualization venue. Many of these systems incorporate machine learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms to introduce some level of automation to the analytical process. However, there are aspects that can impact the effectiveness of the human-machine collaboration, including, but not limited to: 1) People's domain and system expertise; 2) Human biases, including cognitive and perceptual biases; 3) Trust in ML models and visual representation of data. The goal of this workshop is to highlight and foster a conversation around the intersection of visualization and human-centered AI research and practice by providing an interdisciplinary platform from relevant fields to communicate challenges and novel findings around such topics. **TOPICS OF INTEREST** 1. Trust considerations based on different areas of domain expertise (e.g., medical, security, scientific, financial domains) 2. Trust and bias considerations based on different levels of user familiarity with machine learning and visual analytics systems 3. Detecting and preventing cognitive biases in visual analytics and machine learning for users. 4. User trust in machine learning models and visual explanations of model decisions in visual analytics systems. 5. The correlation between trust, domain knowledge, and potential cognitive biases. 6. The relationship between domain expertise and trust with model transparency, human interpretability, and model understandability in visual data analysis. 7. The relationship between model interpretability, domain expertise, and trust. 8. Human-centered considerations in Human-in-the-loop visualization tools and interpretable models. **CONTRIBUTION TYPES** We are looking for and open to diverse forms of research (as listed below) within the realm of visualization and machine learning with appropriate emphasis and relation to human trust, expertise, and cognitive factors. We encourage submissions of research involving: 1. Human empirical research/findings 2. Design guidelines and surveys 3. Technique papers 4. Position papers 5. Case studies **SUBMISSION FORMAT** The workshop will accept papers with 2 to 6 pages in length, plus 2 pages of references. All submissions must be in IEEE VGTC Conference Style Template format (Download the templates here: http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html ). We also encourage authors to submit a short 30-second video of their work (for publication purposes) when submitting their work, if applicable. Depending on the conference format this year (i.e., virtual or hybrid), the authors of the accepted papers might be required to submit a longer video (e.g., 5 to 10 minutes) to substitute a live presentation. In such an event, we will send further instructions closer to the workshop. This means that the papers can only be published in a proper journal as an extended version with at least 30% new content. This means each paper will be published and available through IEEE Xplore with an assigned DOI and are citable. While the papers published in this format can be extended to a journal publication (with 30% new content, subject to the rules of that journal), this content cannot be re-used for a future conference submission, such as IEEE VIS, EuroVis, and CHI. 1. Interested authors should contact the editor in chief of IEEE TVCG for more details. *Review Duties for Authors.* The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide feedback and engage with authors on their work. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. *Ethics and Responsibility.* All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution, and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your affiliation, needs to be indicated via the submission system. *Abstract Submission.* Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. We need researchers who can provide a researcher's perspective on design guidelines and their relationship to empirical research. Should the conditions for acceptance not be met, the paper will be rejected. *Presentation at the Conference.* All accepted submissions must be presented orally during the conference either in person or remotely. There is also the possibility for authors of relevant previously published TVCG papers (accepted within the last year) to present their work at IEEE VR 2023. Interested authors should contact the editor in chief of IEEE TVCG for more details. *Review Duties for Authors.* The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide feedback and engage with authors on their work. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. *Ethics and Responsibility.* All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution, and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your affiliation, needs to be indicated via the submission system. *Abstract Submission.* Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. This facilitates the process of assigning reviewers, as the review process operates on a very tight schedule. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. In some situations, a submission may build upon prior work. In order to fully explain the relationship between the submitted paper and prior work, authors may upload additional papers as well as a non-anonymous letter of explanation that highlights the significant changes or advances; these materials will only be seen by the primary reviewer. Specifically, this treatment is applied to the following cases: - non peer-reviewed works that are publicly available (on arXiv, as a technical report, etc.) - non-archival publications presented in past IEEE VR conferences (posters, demos, etc.) Submissions will be checked for plagiarism using IEEE Crosscheck. Detection of significant plagiarism will lead to rejection. Submissions (*including citations and optional videos*) should not contain information that identifies the authors, their institutions, funding sources, or their places of work. Relevant previous work by the authors should be cited in the third person to preserve anonymity(exceptions were described above). Authors should work diligently to ensure that their submissions do not expose their identities either through carelessness or intentionality. Authors that have questions/issues around the double-blind submission policy should contact the program chairs. *Failure to make reasonable attempts to adhere to the double-blind policy will result in desk rejection.* *Pre-dissemination through public online repositories.* Uploading the submitted manuscript to an online repository (e.g., arXiv) before the end of the review process does not constitute a reason for rejecting the manuscript. However, the authors should be advised that doing so can compromise the anonymity of their manuscript and therefore bias its double-blind review. *Videos.* Videos must be submitted according to the instructions on the submission website. Videos submitted with papers will automatically be considered for possible inclusion in the video proceedings (video submissions may also be made independently, as described in the separate Call for Videos). When submitted as supporting material, videos must be free of any identifying information prior to reviewing as per the double-blind submission policy. If accepted for the video proceedings, a revised version of the materials will be requested. Authors of the best paper will be invited to submit an article about their work to the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics journal. There will also be an award for Best Poster.
