Hi.. We are trying to revise our visualization courses to create one that combines topics in both infovis and scivis. Given that the conferences and the vis communities have been moving closer and closer together and due to some difficulties of offering multiple vis courses in our program, we are trying to have topics from each of these two categories. Clearly its impossible to do justice to both, but since most of our students would take only one Vis course, what would be a syllabus look like? I would like to see examples of anything like this that you might have in your programs. Or at the least, what would be t he absolute essential topics you would want to choose from Infovis and Scivis (sort of the core)? I am thinking of a course at the graduate level at this point, but some version of this at the undergrad level might come later. Case Studies are the continuation of the ISS application papers in previous years. Case Studies are open to researchers and practitioners (e.g. in industry, in education, etc.) and share compelling stories about HCI practice based on real-world experiences that will be instructive and of interest to other members of the community. Based on the concrete cases of research and design, HCI practitioners and researchers will learn how HCI principles and methods can be applied in practical HCI work. For example, industry members can submit papers to share customer outcomes and iterative improvements over next-best alternatives, or educators might submit papers to share applications of HCI to iterate over prior instructional methods or to share novel approaches to teaching HCI topics. Reviewers will emphasize the connection between the real-world domain and the technology used. This connection may for instance concern a challenging domain, features of a system crucial for the real-world use context, a special design process, practical issues in implementation or deployment, or new business opportunities. The Symposium aims to support community building by connecting beginning and established researchers. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for about 30 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing, as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. ================================ IEEE AIVR 2022 - Call for papers, http://ieee-aivr.org 5th International Conference on Artificial Intelligence & Virtual Reality December 12-14, 2022 (online plus on-location satellite events) ================================ IEEE AIVR is a unique event, addressing researchers and industries from all areas of AI as well as Virtual, Augmented, and Mixed Reality. It provides an international forum for the exchange between those fields, to present advances in the state of the art, identify emerging research topics, and together define the future of these exciting research domains. *AREAS OF INTEREST* We invite researchers from Virtual (VR), as well as Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) to participate and submit their work to the program. Likewise, any work on AI that has a relation to any of these fields or potential for the usage in any of them is welcome. Areas of interest for the technical program include but are not limited to: + Systems, incl. techniques, performance, implementation + Content creation and modelling + Cognitive aspects, perception, user behaviour + AI technologies for VR/AR + Interactions, interactive & responsive environments + Applications and use cases + Ethical & societal aspects of AI and VR/AR *SUBMISSIONS* For 2022, we are welcoming submissions for the following tracks: + Technical paper track (4-8 pages, focus on new and innovative research in AR/VR and AI) + Poster and work-in-progress tack (2-4 pages, focus on initial ideas, pilot studies, work in progress) + Industry track (2-4 pages, focus on work with clear relevance for industry) + Demos and videos track (2 pages, focus on prototypes, new solutions, innovative usages) Accepted papers in all of these tracks will be archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. *IMPORTANT DATES & SUBMISSION DETAILS* + August 22, 2022: Submission deadline (all tracks) + Early October 2022: Acceptance notifications (all tracks) + Early November 2022: Camera ready versions due (all tracks) For submission details please refer to the conference's website at http://ieee-aivr.org *VENUE & DATES* The conference will take place from Dec 12-14, 2022. Due to the ongoing COVID pandemic and expected travel restrictions, the event will be held virtually. *Call for Bids to host IEEE VR Conferences* *Call for Bids*. Once a year, the IEEE VR Publicity Committee sends relevant email mailing lists a “Call for Bids to host IEEE VR Conferences”. In the call for bids, the IEEE VR Conference Steering Committee is reaching out to our community to solicit interest for hosting future IEEE VR Conferences. Bids are received throughout the year. Also, the steering committee encourages those active in the IEEE VR community to consider hosting a future IEEE VR conference. Those interested in hosting the five-day conference should email the IEEE VR Steering Committee Chair, J. Edward Swan II (swan(a)acm.org) a brief (1 page) statement of interest. The statement of interest should include information about potential hosts, their previous participation with the IEEE VR Conference, potential locations (cities, convention facilities), possible years for hosting, the capacity of the area to support the conference (hotels and options for international travel), and previous conference organizing experience. At the IEEE VR Conference, the Call for Bids is reiterated during the closing conference remarks. *Consideration of Bids*. Twice a year, the IEEE VR Steering Committee meets to discuss conference organizing and management topics. During these meetings (around September and March during the conference), the committee reviews the submitted bids. The committee uses the following criteria in evaluating bids: - Previous experience of hosts in IEEE VR leadership positions (e.g., conference organizing and program committees) using data collected from previous conferences. - Previous experience of hosts in managing large conferences. - Potential of location and host to successfully host a large event with (400–1000+) international attendees along with a growing (likely 1000+) number of online attendees. - There is a preference (but not a requirement) that a hosting location meet a 3-year rotation of the Americas, Europe / Africa, and Asia / Oceania. - A goal for diversity in representation, research perspectives, and research areas. VIS4DH CfP – Provocation Track or Lab Talks: VIS4DH 2022 – Multimodality The workshop will take place as part of the IEEE VIS conference (16–21 October 2022) in Oklahoma City, OK, USA in the form of a hybrid format, including virtual as well as in-person parts. In this year’s workshop we invite you to explore and discuss aspects of multimodality: Human expression has myriad forms. Painting, reading & writing, music, crafts, dance, fashion, cooking, and other artistic or cultural efforts are more than just visual experiences—they incorporate hearing, touch, and even taste. This multimodality raises both reflective and creative questions about the role of visualization. What do we lose when we reduce these rich multisensory experiences, artifacts, or collections down to just the visual and textual content? How can we compensate for or offset these losses? How can we augment visualizations with other experiential modes, and can these augmentations improve the (embodied) experience accessibility, viscerality, or impact of our data? In other words, what does it mean to think beyond the visual when it comes to visualization in the humanities? We especially seek submissions that likely will promote back-and-forth debate within the interdisciplinary VIS4DH community. * Lab Talks: Since 2020, the VIS4DH workshop has included Lab Talks, a format where research groups working at the intersection of visualization and the digital humanities present their work or labs more generally in brief lightning talks. Additionally, groups can be listed in our VIS×DH overview: https://vis4dh.dbvis.de/labtalks Our call for submissions is open to all fields of the (digital) humanities, social sciences and to all areas of visualization research and practice. The workshop is intended to put different ways of seeing, knowing, articulating, and transforming arguments into dialogue in order to foster and to intensify collaborations between humanities and visualization researchers. We are particularly interested in papers and provocations that bring different disciplines together.
