Join us **Tuesday Sept 27th** at 4:30pm Berlin / 3:30 pm London / 10:30am East Coast US / 7:30 am California / Speaking Stefanie Speidel - Prof. Translational Surgery, NCT-UCC at the University Hospital Dresden/Germany Increasingly powerful technological developments in surgery such as modern operating rooms (OR), featuring digital and interconnected as well as robotic devices provide a huge amount of valuable data which can be used to improve patient therapy. Although a lot of data is available, the human ability to use these possibilities especially in a complex and time-critical situation such as surgery is limited and is extremely dependent on the experience of the surgical staff. In this talk, Stefanie Spidel presents her recent research regarding AI-assisted surgery with a specific focus on visualization for intraoperative assistance. Several examples to optimize the therapy of the individual patient by turning the available data into useful information are given, including context-aware assistance via augmented reality. Finally, remaining challenges and strategies to overcome them are discussed. Case Studies are the continuation of the ISS application papers in previous years. Case Studies are open to researchers and practitioners (e.g. in industry, in education, etc.) and share compelling stories about HCI practice based on real-world experiences that will be instructive and of interest to other members of the community. Based on the concrete cases of research and design, HCI practitioners and researchers will learn how HCI principles and methods can be applied in practical HCI work. For example, industry members can submit papers to share customer outcomes and iterative improvements over next-best alternatives, or educators might submit papers to share applications of HCI to iterate over prior instructional methods or to share novel approaches to teaching HCI topics. Reviewers will emphasize the connection between the real-world domain and the technology used. This connection may for instance concern a challenging domain, features of a system crucial for the real-world use context, a special design process, practical issues in implementation or deployment, or new business opportunities. Case Studies should describe how a problem was addressed by HCI work carried out. They should describe the challenges experienced and how they were tackled, reflect on the experience, what could have been improved, and describe why the case study is of importance to the HCI community. Case Studies can also inspire HCI researchers to further investigate issues that arise from practical research and design work. Participants can expect the chance to present their dissertation research in a supportive environment and to receive constructive expert and peer feedback on their research topics and possible career paths in both academia and industry. The Symposium aims to support community building by connecting beginning and established researchers. The ideal time to apply to participate in the DS is when some progress has been made in Ph.D. research and a path to completion is planned but could benefit from outside opinions and refinement. All research topics suitable for the ACM ISS Conference and associated workshops are appropriate for the DS. The types of data processing and analytic algorithms differ greatly from tabular or geospatial data, and the visualization techniques have additional constraints to consider, including the provision of context for text fragments of similar or different size and structure, depicting embeddings and high dimensional representations, and ensuring legibility of text incorporated into visualizations. The wide variation in data is accompanied by the difficulties in inferring the semantic meaning of ambiguous terms, or determining the referencing between subsequent statements. We invite the community to submit new articles examining the challenges and successes when applying information visualization to text analytics. Articles may focus on theories, methodologies, techniques and evaluations of visual text analytics approaches and systems. Articles that specifically explore the state of research within the specific theme of this special issue are also welcome, but position papers are not in the focus of the journal.
