Moreover, our department fosters a close dialogue with industry and encourages and supports the creation of spin-off companies. # Job Description We are looking for a candidate with proven scientific expertise in the field of Mixed Reality in research and teaching. The following areas are of particular interest: - Mixed Reality displays, in particular optical see-through head-mounted displays (design, algorithms, calibration) - Eye-tracking for Mixed Reality - Spatial perception, cognition and interaction in Mixed Reality The successful candidate will cover these or other topics in Mixed Reality. It is expected that the candidate closely collaborates with the institute’s strategic industrial partners in the area of Mixed Reality and leads a research team funded through such industrial collaborations. The position is initially funded by SNAP, Inc. The professorship will be part of the Institute of Computer Graphics and Vision (www.icg.tugraz.at) which is an internationally visible research environment with more than 60 researchers in Visual Computing. The new professor will complement the existing strengths in the department, will build an internationally visible group, will be an engaged teacher in the Computer Science programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD level, and will actively participate in academic self-administration. Graph Drawing and Network Visualization are motivated by applications where it is crucial to visually analyze and interact with relational datasets. Examples of such application areas include data science, social sciences, web computing, information systems, biology, geography, business intelligence, information security, or software engineering. GD has been the main annual event in this area for about 30 years. Its focus is on combinatorial and algorithmic aspects of graph drawing, as well as the design of network visualization systems and interfaces. Researchers and practitioners working on any aspects of graph drawing and network visualization are invited to contribute papers and posters and to participate in the symposium and the graph drawing contest. GD 2022 will be held at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, on September 13-16, 2022, with a reception on the evening of September 13. A pre-conference PhD school is planned for September 12-13, 2022. The conference format will be hybrid, as both on-site and remote participation/presentation will be possible. The poster session will provide a forum for the communication of late-breaking research results, of theoretical or applied nature, to the GD community. Results presented in a GD poster may also appear elsewhere. Authors of posters should prepare an abstract (up to two pages, excluding references - using the llncs.cls LaTeX style file) describing the main points of the contribution, which must be submitted together with the poster. The default margins and fonts must not be modified; in particular, the use of packages such as times.sty is not allowed. Abstracts of accepted posters will appear in the conference proceedings (two pages+references). The maximum size for a poster is A0 (84.1 cm x 118.9 cm). Each submission will then consist of two pdf files (the two-page abstract and the poster). Poster submissions will be evaluated by the Program Committee of GD 2022 in a single-blind mode. The position can be extended after the initial 2-year period up to an additional year. We are seeking highly creative and motivated individuals that want to start their research career in immersive visualization at the EAC. Candidates need to have a strong background in interactive computer graphics or related fields, good programming skills, experience with current graphics APIs, and familiarity with visualization tools and/or game engines. Despite its extraordinary performance, AI in biomedical applications should be treated cautiously due to the high stakes involved. Effective visualization can significantly improve the information communication between AI systems and human users and is playing an increasingly important role in biomedical AI. To explore the challenges and opportunities in this highly interdisciplinary field, we invite submissions from both 1) visualization researchers that conduct application studies on biomedical AI and 2) biomedical AI researchers who address their domain challenges with the help of visualizations. Apart from visualization tools, case studies, evaluations, and design guidelines, we also highly encourage white papers that discuss scenarios where visualizations are most needed and the obstacles in applying visualizations, regardless of whether the biomedical researchers have developed visualization tools or not. User trust in machine learning models and visual explanations of model decisions in visual analytics systems. 5. The correlation between trust, domain knowledge, and potential cognitive biases. 6. The relationship between domain expertise and trust with model transparency, human interpretability, and model understandability in visual data analysis. 7. The relationship between model interpretability, domain expertise, and trust. 8. Human-centered considerations in Human-in-the-loop visualization tools and interpretable models. **CONTRIBUTION TYPES** We are looking for and open to diverse forms of research (as listed below) within the realm of visualization and machine learning with appropriate emphasis and relation to human trust, expertise, and cognitive factors. We encourage submissions of research involving: 1. Human empirical research/findings 2. Design guidelines and surveys 3. Technique papers 4. Position papers 5. Case studies **SUBMISSION FORMAT** The workshop will accept papers with 2 to 6 pages in length, plus 2 pages of references. All submissions must be in IEEE VGTC Conference Style Template format (Download the templates here: http://junctionpublishing.org/vgtc/Tasks/camera.html ). We also encourage authors to submit a short 30-second video of their work (for publication purposes) when submitting their work, if applicable. Based on the level of contribution, reviewers will make an initial recommendation for one of the following outcomes for each submission: *Conditionally accept as IEEE TVCG paper.* Continuing our cooperation with the IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics (TVCG), paper submissions with substantial contribution will automatically be considered for publication in a special issue of IEEE TVCG. *Conditionally accept as conference paper.* The remaining accepted papers will appear in the Proceedings of IEEE VR and be archived in the IEEE Xplore Digital Library. *Recommend for major revision to IEEE TVCG.* Submissions that make a substantial contribution but that require revisions that are beyond what can be achieved within the conference reviewing process will be recommended for major revision to IEEE TVCG. Reviewer continuity will be attempted but not guaranteed. Note that as per IEEE TVCG rules a single major revision is possible. *Recommend as a 2-page poster.* If reviewers feel papers are not acceptable for the journal or conference tracks, reviewers may also recommend the papers for the poster proceedings. Posters are up to 2 pages including references. Traditionally, IEEE VR does not consider posters to be formal publications. Work accepted as a poster may be eligible for future publication in other venues. Posters will be included in the IEEE VR Abstracts and Workshops proceedings and will be archived in the IEEE Digital Library. *Reject.* *Second review cycle* Primary reviewers will review the revised papers and will make a final recommendation for acceptance. Should the conditions for acceptance not be met, the paper will be rejected. *Presentation at the Conference.* All accepted submissions must be presented orally during the conference either in person or remotely. There is also the possibility for authors of relevant previously published TVCG papers (accepted within the last year) to present their work at IEEE VR 2023. Interested authors should contact the editor in chief of IEEE TVCG for more details. *Review Duties for Authors.* The increasing number of submissions for IEEE VR makes us all dependent on a large number of good reviewers who are willing to provide feedback and engage with authors on their work. To expand the reviewing pool and to promote quality reviews, one author will be required to register to review up to three papers through PCS at the time of submission. Additionally, senior authors are encouraged to ask experienced junior authors to register in PCS to review papers, and then to mentor the junior authors during the review process. *Ethics and Responsibility.* All submissions describing research experiments with human participants must follow the appropriate ethical guidelines required by the authors’ institution, and authors are required to secure and report their approval by the relevant ethics committee. An approval by any ethical review board, if required by your affiliation, needs to be indicated via the submission system. *Abstract Submission.* Note that a paper abstract must be uploaded seven days prior to the actual paper submission deadline. This facilitates the process of assigning reviewers, as the review process operates on a very tight schedule. Submitted manuscripts must not have been previously published. A manuscript is considered to have been previously published if it has appeared in a peer-reviewed journal, magazine, book, or meeting proceedings that is reliably and permanently available afterward in print or electronic form to non-attendees, regardless of the language of that publication. A manuscript identical or substantially similar in content (in its entirety or in part) to one submitted to VR should not be simultaneously under consideration for another conference or journal during any part of the VR review process, from the submission deadline until notifications of decisions are emailed to authors. In some situations, a submission may build upon prior work. In order to fully explain the relationship between the submitted paper and prior work, authors may upload additional papers as well as a non-anonymous letter of explanation that highlights the significant changes or advances; these materials will only be seen by the primary reviewer. Specifically, this treatment is applied to the following cases: - non peer-reviewed works that are publicly available (on arXiv, as a technical report, etc.) - non-archival publications presented in past IEEE VR conferences (posters, demos, etc.) Submissions will be checked for plagiarism using IEEE Crosscheck. Detection of significant plagiarism will lead to rejection. For more information about definitions of plagiarism and IEEE policies in this area, please see the Introduction to the Guidelines for Handling Plagiarism Complaints <https://www.ieee.org/publications/rights/plagiarism/plagiarism.html> and the IEEE Publication Services and Products Board Operations Manual <http://www.ieee.org/documents/opsmanual.pdf>. *IEEE VR uses a DOUBLE-BLIND review process.* This means that both the authors and the reviewers should remain anonymous to each other. Submissions (*including citations and optional videos*) should not contain information that identifies the authors, their institutions, funding sources, or their places of work. Relevant previous work by the authors should be cited in the third person to preserve anonymity(exceptions were described above). Authors should work diligently to ensure that their submissions do not expose their identities either through carelessness or intentionality. Authors that have questions/issues around the double-blind submission policy should contact the program chairs. *Failure to make reasonable attempts to adhere to the double-blind policy will result in desk rejection.* *Pre-dissemination through public online repositories.* Uploading the submitted manuscript to an online repository (e.g., arXiv) before the end of the review process does not constitute a reason for rejecting the manuscript. However, the authors should be advised that doing so can compromise the anonymity of their manuscript and therefore bias its double-blind review. *Videos.* Videos must be submitted according to the instructions on the submission website. Videos submitted with papers will automatically be considered for possible inclusion in the video proceedings (video submissions may also be made independently, as described in the separate Call for Videos). When submitted as supporting material, videos must be free of any identifying information prior to reviewing as per the double-blind submission policy. If accepted for the video proceedings, a revised version of the materials will be requested. Dear all, We are investigating a potential knowledge gap between visualization design guidelines in practice and empirical studies in research. We need researchers who can provide a researcher's perspective on design guidelines and their relationship to empirical research.
