The types of data processing and analytic algorithms differ greatly from tabular or geospatial data, and the visualization techniques have additional constraints to consider, including the provision of context for text fragments of similar or different size and structure, depicting embeddings and high dimensional representations, and ensuring legibility of text incorporated into visualizations. The wide variation in data is accompanied by the difficulties in inferring the semantic meaning of ambiguous terms, or determining the referencing between subsequent statements. We invite the community to submit new articles examining the challenges and successes when applying information visualization to text analytics. Articles may focus on theories, methodologies, techniques and evaluations of visual text analytics approaches and systems. Hi.. We are trying to revise our visualization courses to create one that combines topics in both infovis and scivis. Given that the conferences and the vis communities have been moving closer and closer together and due to some difficulties of offering multiple vis courses in our program, we are trying to have topics from each of these two categories. Clearly its impossible to do justice to both, but since most of our students would take only one Vis course, what would be a syllabus look like? I would like to see examples of anything like this that you might have in your programs. Or at the least, what would be t he absolute essential topics you would want to choose from Infovis and Scivis (sort of the core)? I am thinking of a course at the graduate level at this point, but some version of this at the undergrad level might come later. Case Studies are the continuation of the ISS application papers in previous years. Case Studies are open to researchers and practitioners (e.g. in industry, in education, etc.) and share compelling stories about HCI practice based on real-world experiences that will be instructive and of interest to other members of the community. Based on the concrete cases of research and design, HCI practitioners and researchers will learn how HCI principles and methods can be applied in practical HCI work. For example, industry members can submit papers to share customer outcomes and iterative improvements over next-best alternatives, or educators might submit papers to share applications of HCI to iterate over prior instructional methods or to share novel approaches to teaching HCI topics. Participants can expect the chance to present their dissertation research in a supportive environment and to receive constructive expert and peer feedback on their research topics and possible career paths in both academia and industry. The Symposium aims to support community building by connecting beginning and established researchers. The ideal time to apply to participate in the DS is when some progress has been made in Ph.D. research and a path to completion is planned but could benefit from outside opinions and refinement. All research topics suitable for the ACM ISS Conference and associated workshops are appropriate for the DS.
